Gameday dragons v cowboys

I'm really not worried by that fade. We played with our food. We knew we were bigger, faster and stronger than the Cowboys after the first 40. We completely switched off in the second 40 and still did enough to win. Good kick up the arse before we head to Allianz next week.
I think that 2nd half is exactly what we needed, that will make us a complete side & I doubt they will let that happen again .

Nobody seems to want to acknowledge that we are serious contenders so on the flip side, I am not going to harangue them for what transpired in the 2nd half. I agree with what's been said, it was mixture of attitude, a couple of terrible missed tackles, drop ball and one of the worst refereeing displays I have seen for a while, that fortunately did not cost us the two points.

You don't want or need to be playing your best football now but that first 40 was a treat and an indication of what we are capable of. We haven't fluked a win this year, and are well deserving of sitting on top of the table. Panthers are paying shorter odds than us for the premiership which I think is a bit of a joke by this stage. Everyone is waiting for our bubble to burst. 5 wins in a row! I'll take them any way they come.

And here's me thinking that I would have a dull, non-chalante 2017! What a game!

Those blaming the refs are kidding themselves, we just put the cue in the rack and, like so many teams, found it hard to pick it back up when we needed. Luckily, our defense held it together. But the scary thing is that we were slipping into old habit - outside backs taking 1-out scoots, forwards not poking noses through. In the first half, whenever McInnes bent down at dummy half you'd see 3-4 people around the ruck spring into action, giving options and putting the opposition in 2 minds. No such movement in the second half.

Some interesting points:
- Lafai's first try really showed the value of McInnes. When the ball was being played, he was 100% set up to go right, and I nearly started yelling at the idiots for missing a huge opportunity on the left. But not only did he have the vision to get it to Widdop, he shifted his weight so smoothly that the Cowboys right side defense could barely react, and his long pass to Widdop was inch perfect. So good.

- I hope we hold onto Widdop and Lafai, they are looking like a glorious combo, with Mann included. However, with hunt coming next year and the hope that he plays both sides of the ruck, we need to put consideration into a fullback with the ability to link to the right side. Aitken looks great when he gets the ball with space, but need someone to give him that and it's a bit much to expect Gareth to do that on both sides.

- Nightingale is doing really well at fullback, and the early ball he is giving Lafai is great. What he's missing is the decision making you see in guys like Boyd, Coote and Moylan; they recognise when the centre will be rushed and hit a long ball to the winger, or kick through. Nighty doesnt have that instinct (neither does Dugan). It's an extra piece of the arsenal we need if/when teams start to shut down our backline play.

Entertaining game, 2 points, hopefully a good kick in the ass to prep them for the Roosters.

It is wins like that, that define a season. I honestly reckon they went out in that second half already looking toward the ANZAC Day game.

It didn't help but from my point of view, very few, if any, 50/50 calls went our way, and the bounce of the ball failed us as well. I really reckon we would have lost that last year.

Hopefully a lot of lessons are learnt from that. Game management at the back end of the game, loose tackles, poor ball control. The most worrying was how they went in their shell and tried to defend the lead. that is negative football and that is Dragons of 2015/16.

JDB is such a massive difference. I really think he is the leader of the pack. When he was still on in the second half, that was when we were still playing a bit of footy. He went off and we started to lose the forward battle badly and leaked points. He came back on, we leaked no more points and we started to run hard again.

And thank Nene for his Hand of God moment. Saved Aitken from really looking like a knob.

Agree
But packer and Vaughan were of at the same time as jack.
Thats when momentum changed.
As well as 6 or 7 penalties in a row .

Already noted that two trys to the Cowboys were those things that really bust both players and supporters. A gubber kick through which richocheted off our player back away from our players covering its direction to the other side of the field where the cowboys forward was following through. A bomb went up and hands everywhere bumping and striking Mc Donald!s catch and it landed fortunately down to a cowboy. Who knows what happens that's why it's a Hail Mary.

Actually kicks and fortunate bounces of the ball were the cowboys rub of green which kept them in it including a handy 5 to 1 count in penalties in second half.

Yes when the Dragons score off these types of kick and hope for a good bounce, ricochet or hands and pushing everywhere Hail Mary trys I cheer too. That's footy.

They were never 30-0, they were 18-0

Its obvious to all that we put the cue in the rack hence the final score......but myself and others are not blaming the ref just simply pointing out that they got all the rub of the green calls and were blatantly off side for most of the second half.........makes a big difference to the shift in momentum when everything goes your way.....having said that there were times when we were guilty of to much one out stuff instead of sticking to the game plan..as I previously stated hopefully we have learnt from it

Just glad that we won tonight. I don't care that JT was not there. He could not have made any difference in the first half but would have killed us in the second half
After our wins so far this year we were due to lose. So let's take the points and get ready for Easts.

I've now seen enough football now to know, that while I would have loved to have seen Dragons carry on and put 50 on the Cowboys, at the end of the year, a win is a win.

We were missing arguably our best player this game as well. People need to remember that when pulling out that excuse. So many death riding us this year...

Soon enough we will lose, I just really hope we can get one over the Roosters again next week. I hope we play the full 80 this time.

Dragons hold out fast-finishing Cowboys
Sat 15th April, 09:15PM
A A

The St George Illawarra Dragons have done enough to hold out the North Queensland Cowboys, winning 28-22 at WIN Stadium, Wollongong on Saturday night.

The Dragons hit the scoreboard first through Nene Macdonald, the winger latching on to a wayward Josh McCrone pass before crossing in the corner in spectacular fashion.

The Cowboys levelled up through winger Gideon Gela-Mosby who scored out wide following a Blake Leary grubber.

In an otherwise even tussle, the Dragons finally hit the lead midway through the first half when centre Tim Lafai juked his way past would-be Cowboys defenders to score.

A Lafai flick pass helped contribute to the Dragons' next four-pointer, with Kurt Mann diving over in the corner.

A penalty goal from Gareth Widdop was quickly followed by a try to the skipper thanks to second-phase play from Jack de Belin and Russell Packer.

Lafai's second try came three minute from half-time to help put the Red V ahead 28-4 at the break.

Three tries in nine minutes put the Cowboys well back in proceedings. It started in the 55th minute when Ben Spina pounced on a loose Michael Morgan grubber.

Morgan himself crossed next following a handy ball from makeshift five-eighth John Asiata in the 62nd minute.

This was quickly followed up two minutes later by Scott Bolton, who capitalised off a messy ending to an Asiata bomb to put the Cowboys back within six.

A nervous final 15 minutes ensued though the Dragons would hang on by the skin of their teeth.

St George Illawarra Dragons 28 (Tim Lafai 2, Nene Macdonald, Kurt Mann, Gareth Widdop tries; Gareth Widdop 4 goals) defeated North Queensland Cowboys 22 (Gideon Gela-Mosby, Ben Spina, Michael Morgan, Scott Bolton tries; Kyle Feldt 3 goals) at WIN Stadium, Wollongong. Half-time: Dragons 28-4. Crowd: 13,886.

Cowboys fall short of Dragons despite second-half comeback

DEMOLITION JOB: The Dragons ran in five first half tries to eventually hold off the Cowboys 28-22 at WIN Stadium on Saturday night. Picture: Georgia Matts

IT was an unlikely comeback sparked by the unlikeliest of heroes, but St George Illawarra held off a fast finishing Cowboys outfit remain at at the top of the NRL ladder with a tense 28 -22 victory over North Queensland at WIN Stadium on Saturday night.

With Cowboys skipper Jonathan Thurston watching on from the sideline, makeshift five-eighth John Asiata produced an inspired second-half performance, laying on two of the visitors three second half tries in the space of 10 minutes to cut a 24-8 halftime deficit to just six with 15 minutes to play.

It wasn’t enough to steal a late victory but it was certainly a humbling second 40 minutes for the Dragons who didn’t look like adding to their halftime tally, and had to scramble down the stretch to prevent an embarrassing loss.

Coach Paul McGregor was an animated figure in the coach’s box throughout the second stanza but was measured in his response post-match.

“I think it's good learning for us. We haven't been in that position, to be in front by that scoreline [at halftime],’ McGregor said.

“Obviously the first 40, we played some really good footy, defended strong on the back of that created opportunities, scored points.

“In the second half we had a 5-1 penalty count discipline-wise, certainly collectively we didn't do anything together with our defence which created opportunities for the opposition and a bit of space.

“I thought our intent was good, I just don't think collectively we did it together, we went one out a little bit too much with the footy when we had it and without it we didn't control any of the tackles. We let three tries in off kicks which is not good enough.

“I think every game you got something to grow with and I think this game, certainly we got something to come out of it. This competition’s pretty tough so we'll take the two points and we'll learn from what we done right and we'll certainly improve on what we done wrong.”

The Cowboys resurgence came after a first half demolition led by in-form skipper Gareth Widdop who scored a try and laid on a double for Tim Lafai after Nene MacDonald opened the scoring in the eighth minute.

Widdop finished the opening half with 12 points, converting his own try that came from some great lead-up work from Russell Packer as the hosts took a handy 24-point buffer into into the break.

The Cowboys could only manage Gideon Gela-Mosby’s 12th minute four pointer in response, completing just five of 12 sets in the opening stanza and missed a staggering 22 tackles to the Dragons eight.

The ledger turned dramatically in the second half, with the Dragons making seven errors and conceding five penalties to one to invite the visitors back into the contest.

Ben Spina scored first before Asiata put Morgan across untouched with a deft short-ball in the 62nd minute and provided the bomb for Scott Bolton to score just two minutes later to get the visitors within six with 15 minutes to play.

They peppered the Dragons line throughout the final 10 minutes but couldn’t find an equaliser with Cowboys coach Paul Green was left ruing a disastrous start.

“I don’t think Jono [Thurston] would’ve made much difference in that first half,’ Green said.

“That 20-minute period at back end of the first half, we just switched right off there on both sides of the footy and the game got away from us

“Defensively we were off, we made some really basic errors in our own half and just put ourselves under a lit of pressure. They got a couple of tries back to back which took us a bit to recover from and we just played the game down our end far too much in that first half.”
