Gasnier's Commitment to the Dragons

Remember his call to all his teammates to take paycuts to stay together? Then his hasty reassessment when it looked like Barrett might go to England? Now this...

Gasnier sets up ARU meeting

MARK Gasnier's manager will this week contact Wallabies coach John Connolly in the first definitive sign the Dragons ace is contemplating a daring "now or never" switch to rugby union.

And Connolly is not opposed to any ARU attempt to woo Gasnier, claiming the NSW and Test centre would be a sensation in the code.

Despite months of speculation over Gasnier's future, the two parties have not held preliminary talks, with the ARU instructing Gasnier to make the first approach only if he is genuine.

Now Gasnier is ready to up the ante. His manager George Mimis will speak to Connolly this week to discuss opportunities in rugby for Gasnier, who is off-contract at the end of this season.

"I'd definitely like to get some feedback from the national coach on where he sees Gaz's ability from a rugby perspective," Mimis said. "Gaz is only 25 but if he was to make a serious move to rugby, it would have to be now or never.

"Mark hasn't closed the door on rugby. We haven't had any formal or informal discussions with the ARU, but that is not to say we won't. Gaz hasn't played rugby at any high level but if there are people in rugby who think he could make the transition, a discussion with John Connolly is worth having."

Connolly said Gasnier is such a rare talent he could make a near seamless transition to rugby and be a backline option for the 2007 World Cup.

"Mark would be a great player in rugby, no doubt," Connolly said. "If we got a firm and serious offer from his manager, there would be an interest. I would certainly support the ARU in that regard. League players who cross over [to rugby] in their prime have proven to have a good impact in our game. Look at Mat Rogers and Lote Tuqiri. Every year that Mark stays in league will make it harder for him to succeed in rugby. But if he wanted to move now I have no doubts he would adapt to the game quickly."

While Gasnier is content at the Dragons and his preference is to stay there, several critical factors make rugby an attractive option.

A World Cup berth aside, Gasnier could earn at least $200,000 a season more if he pledged his future to the ARU.

Mimis said discussions with the Dragons, who are keen to tie up Gasnier for another three years, remain a "work in progress".

"We're still working on a package," he said. "We have been throwing numbers around but we're not at the level where we can discuss the length of the deal yet. Trent [Barrett, who is considering a move to England in 2007] has an influence on matters too, not in terms of whether he's there or not but more how it means the Dragons are placed under the salary cap."

Mimis insists Gasnier's interest in rugby is not a publicity stunt to increase his value :)lol:  )

"Rugby league is his preferred sport, no doubt about that," he said. "But if we can't put together a deal that is amenable with the Dragons, he will seriously consider rugby."

Had a bit of a chuckle at that too. Seems he's quick to jump off the sinking ship once the captain's in the life raft...

You can when a few weeks ago he was asking all of his fellow players to take paycuts to keep the team together, yet now is off to talk to Union if the Dragons package isn't good enough.

Amazes me that he could get 200 grand more in an inferior sport!

Just another sad reflection of the RU talent pool I guess.

Who here wouldn't like to earn an extra $200 grand a year?
Take it, don't take it, whatever. Just stop pretending to have such high principles.

Gasnier is a scumbag.

But we already knew that.

Shane Elford was a more valuable centre for his club last year than Gasnier for his.

Do you think some of it is using the Family Name as a bargaining tool, Kinda like can you have this Name playing Union?

Also, it must be the start of the NRL Season if there is talk of one of our players switching to the Dark side.

Also if i was earning a decent Wad of Money doing a Job i love and that had been damn good to me, and i really loved my work colleagues, then NO i wouldnt take extra Money to work for a rival company that would love to put my employer out of Business. Money isnt everything to everybody.......................although it is to this Guy by the sounds of it.

true, the western force need something lol. i can understand that an extra 200g a season would be awesome but he just seems so cocky. he does it for attention and he likes the media speculation on whether he will go to union or stay.

union is all international footy, i guess gasnier wants not only the cash but the chance to play a real competitive level of international football

still wouldnt be enough to sway me to a boring as batsh*t game with less talented players and more eye gouging than a team full of ryan cross's

The campaign shows no sign of relenting I notice, nqboy. Again, however, there are no direct quotes from Gasnier himself, nor is there any evidence that this supposed upcoming meeting has been planned at all. All I can see is lazy journalism, typical player agent rhetoric, and typical fishing from the Yawn-Yawn custodian. Barely worth the time of day.

Definitely looks like a lazy news day. As you say, the article doesn't provide anything more than speculation. And player managers are ready to jump at any opportunity which may see their client's value go up.
But people are always ready to read what they want into it.

It looks like the door is being opened by Union. That's hardly Gasnier's doing. But let's not let that get in the way of any hysteria.

Still on the subject of lazy reporting, here are some of the funnier quotes in this thread:
Seems he's quick to jump off the sinking ship once the captain's in the life raft...

Not a Quote at all but an Opinion, you might or might not agree with it, but this is a Forum is it not and we are hear to give our Opinions, and i am not the first or last to suggest that he might be (or his Agent) using one of the most famous Names in the Game in Australia as a bargaining tool with his Club and the Game as a whole.

Utter Bull **** it may be, but he has never struck me as the Sharpish tool in the Box, and it is something that wouldnt shock me if it were true.

For what it is worth, i just want the Guy to sign a new Contract with the Dragons, or any other NRL Club and get on with enjoying watching the Guy play his Rugby. Something he is Damn Good at.

Some blokes seem to have this speculation about them all the time. Some do not allow themselves to be put in such a position (nor do their managers). I think we know which side Gaz sits...

LOL. Who recognises their quote? In this happy-go-lucky world of today, its good to see that some folk still take themselves seriously.

Nook, I don't mean you btw. But I'll have a dig mate. :)

2005 was probably Gasnier's best season yet. His representative selection at Origin and Kangaroo level is testimony to that. At club level he played 19 first grade matches, in addition to backing up for Origin (and all the experience that comes with it).

Elford played 16 first grade matches. Rep honours = 0.
In effect, Elford played less than Gasnier.

So based on that, Gasnier was more valuable for his club last year.

Having said that, Elford is a fine player and imo, its a bit unfair to make comparisons.
