Goalkicking

Shaun Johnson has booted 14/24 goals so far, running at 58.33%
Its fair to say that this cost us the game last week.

Why was there no plan for a genuine goal kicker since Maloney departed?

Back in the days of Witt and Cleary at least we had a guaranteed 4-6 extra points per game compared to what is going on now.

I think this a big problem that is being swept under the carpet somewhat.

This was my favourite hobby horse back in the Witt days. Most people - to be fair not on here - would say 'you can't pick a guy for his goalkicking'. Providing he's not a complete draught horse, why not?

I always thought Witt was a competent enough player who deserved to be picked every week when he was shooting 90% +. The mental shift from being 2 points down to square, to being square to 2 up, to being six behind as opposed to eight and chasing the game...it's massive.

And we're experiencing that with Johnson. It probably doesn't help his game either, being burdened with copping the blame - which he openly apologised for last week. Unfortunately we have no other options that I'm aware of, and I'd hope and presume he works hard on it.

There's no way we can know whether or not his goalkicking cost us the game.

However, it definitely could further down the track.

Apparently Laumape has a very good boot on him.

I know he's injured but I'm sure Locke has kicked for us before , not sure what his stats are though.

Great post and one that I firmly believe to be true. Think back to the Roosters game at Eden Park last year too. Laumape did kick well in reserve grade 2 weeks ago.

A guy like Pat Richards is a bonus as he can kick goals and his kick offs are awesome.

We scored 4 tries, they scored 3 and banged over a penalty and field goal.

Its pretty fair to say that our goal kicking cost us the match.

No, that's short sighted.

At best we're up 24-18 when Reynolds milks the penalty. Do you think they take the kick at goal then? No, they get a set of six against our frail defensive line.

I would agree that goal kicking would have increased our chances, but it guaranteed nothing.

I do see your point, let us agree that it tips the scales greatly in our favour at 24-18.
I would say 80% chance we go on to win it from there.

Absolutely. Much easier to defend a set of six than a kick for goal.

It's something that needs addressing for sure. It's amazing how often SJ skims or hits the posts though so you'd think it wouldn't take a massive adjustment in style.

Back in the Winfield Cup days, most of the great kickers where Kiwis, Ridge, Halligan, Eron Crossin, (at times) Gavin Hill (there's more but that's just off the top of my head) now there are none.

Even Halligan is coaching Trent Hodginson, whose coaching the Warriors?

IIRC Laumape kicked 5 from 5 for the NSWarriors a couple of weeks ago. Not from easy positions either.

Also from what I understand, Benry was the secondary goal kicker last year when fit. Laumape was firing them from the sidelines v the sharks

I am of the belief it cost the game - regardless, whether you believe that or not, 58% is unacceptable, and over the season that will cost in close games - and it's very kickable ones that are being missed

Ngani was interesting. No real hard swing of the boot, all timing and a bit of a hook which he seemed to be aiming for.

FWIW, I think Shaun's going to turn into a very good goal kicker. Can kick a ball. I thought he improved a lot over the back end of the year. Once he's got his confidence up he seems to have no problems booting them from the sideline.

It seems we've always had a top rate goal kicker during our most successful years. For example Cleary (2002), Witt (2008) and Maloney (2011), as per the original post.

Interestingly, that half we let go last year - Harry Siejka - could kick. Probably not up to scratch with the rest of it though.

Schuster often banged them over for Newcastle, and he was never considered as a kicker when he was in the All Blacks (Fox and Gallagher were the first two, in that order).

Gallagher went on to kick goals for Leeds.

Harry wanted to go back to Australia http://www.radiosport.co.nz/news/sp...omesick-sjeika-leaves-warriors--joins-dragons

Whether that's true or not probably knew he wasn't going to get in 1st grade behind most of our options we have at the moment.

The Chad can kick fairly well as well.

It doesn't always equate to success though. We had Frano Botica, albeit for a handful of games, and Matthew Ridge in years where we didn't travel so well.

I still see large potential in SJ's goal kicking.
