I always get angry at teams who are close enough to construct a try but opt for a field goal and miss by miles.

Just get rid of it altogether, the teams were as good as each other - draw.

Get rid of it. Being a Cronulla fan Ive given it a lot of thought this week (remember rd1 against tigers?). That game was a pubic hair away from being decided in the first 10 seconds of GP. The Sharks plausibly could have and pretty much should have won the game without the Tigers even touching the ball. How in hell is that fair?

(In 2008 this actually happened when we beat the Stains at ANZ. They kick off, sharks roll up the middle, Ryles gives away a penalty and they kick a goal. Its unfair. )

You've got 80 minutes to win or lose the game. The result at the end should stand in a regular club match.

Anybody who watched footy in the 80's and 90's would know what is going to happen if we scrap Golden Point completely. We go back to a field goal-athon from 70th minute instead of the 80th minute and the ref puts the whistle away at the 70th minute mark instead of 80 too. It should be 10mins one way... No halftime and time signalled off for scoring plays ie goal kicks. Home team picks direction or ball.... Tough titties if there is an advantage for wind or whatever. Most points win.

The 'draw was fine for 100 odd years' argument is geniused. Just because the rule existed for so long doesn't mean it can't be improved upon.

Unlimited tackle rule was around for 50 odd years. 5m onside rule was around for nearly 100 years. Both examples of rules changed for the better.

No reason why we shouldn't be looking to search for ways to make a game more entertaining by tweaking golden point rules. I think 10 minutes extra time followed by unlimited golden point would be great. A point to the losing team in OT seems fair too.

Golden try is the way to go...

No it won't work. Teams will do all they can to stop a try (illegally) because they won't lose from a penalty. It could develop into a farce.

5 each way, that way refs might give a penalty as they wont necessarily decide the result. Whoever has most points wins. If not, a draw. Same should apply in finals - no golden point, 5 each way. I'd hate to lose a semi in extra time without touching the pill.

Should be a way to redeem yourself if opposition slot a field goal in 1st minute of extra time.

Keep it simple FFS.

Like we saw the other night, I cant believe the Roosters went for a field goal so early in the tackle.

I agree the Golden Point is basically a field goal-a-thon, but Ive never really been a fan of it. Should be kept in Origin and finals. There was nothing wrong with a draw.

Teams should be rewarded for drawing after the 80 minutes. I wouldnt mind Golden point if teams both got a point each after 80 minutes and play the extra 10 minutes for an extra point.

I mean how crucial would that 1 point be at the end of the season? .

Prior to 2003, I remember draws being a little disappointed but knowing we still got a point out of it was satisfied.

Prefer the following

Regular sesaon - its a draw after 80 min. The last 10 min of the game becaomes golden point anyway

Semis - play 10 min each way

If drawn then a mid week replay on Tue

If the replay is still drawn then Golden Point

A mid week replay would be a great marketing opportunity for our game

Just play extra time for 10 minutes - if a team kicks a field goal, they will still have to defend to hold onto the lead and ultimately teams may go for more points.

Fixtures: Extra time, 5 mins each way......no golden point.

If the scores are still tied, it's a draw. 1 point each for the match.

The sticky point in the past has been...... what happens when a series is being played. NSW squealed like bitches each time when QLD retained the title in '99 & 2002 because the series was drawn

Grand finals and semis........have to have a winner.

5min each way ....another 5 mins each way

until a winner is decided.

The total epic struggle that great games are made legends of.

Same for SOO or any series decider.

Good idea siv - that's pretty much the way it used to be.

But if the code's suits reckon extra time should be given to decide an outcome, how about this for an idea.

Just dont blow fulltime!

In a close game, the last 5 mins sees the team which is behind throw the ball around like crazy to try and jag a try - or if the scores are level then both teams will. As soon as fulltime is blown and golden point comes in, the next set of 6 suddenly isnt about scoring - its about field position. And by having a kickoff, teams get a chance to regroup and implement a new game plan. The panic and instinct of the previous 5 minutes is gone.

The stupid thing about field goals is that the forwards suddenly go one out again. What happened to the concept of small, fast players capitalising on the tiredness of forwards to create breaks? It gets forgotten. Seeing a talent like Carney facing a tired pack NOT running the ball is idiotic.

What if this happens? At the 80 minute mark of a drawn game the hooter is NOT blown until a break in play - be it a turnover, scrum or penalty. When that happens, a short blast of the siren alerts the referee, who then tells the captains that it's now first to score. Then the game resumes with the turnover, scrum, goal line drop or penalty as normal? No time wasting, no kickoff, no player meetings, no coin toss or changing sides. Just play on. Then, after 10 minutes with no result, shake hands and go home.

And dont call it "golden point" - I reckon that name is as much to blame for the field goal a thons by emphasising the need for only a point to win.

I reckon players wont have as much time to change their thinking from "must score a try" to "Must kick a field goal". And the first set of extra time won't be all about field position either.

Not under a first to four system. Give away a penalty in front of the sticks once to prevent a try, two points. Give away a second penalty in front of the sticks, two more points - game over. First to four addresses both the problem of a single refs decision deciding the game (and discouraging refs from giving penalties) and the potential problem with Golden Try of penalties not being any disincentive because you could only lose with a try. A try is effectively golden but all forms of scoring still count and can add up to a win or loss. Give away enough penalties and you'll lose - just like in the previous 80 mins.

Leigh.

There was about maybe 4 or 5 field goals attempted by a team all year, previously.

When Langer kicked that field goal to win QLD the Origin in 1992, that was something like only his 2nd ever field goal, and he ended up kicking only 8 in his career.
