'If they don't really want me, I should just leave' Newcastle Knights, says Joey Leilua

He has offered to move on before the June 30 deadline if the Knights don't want him.

But if they do, as appears likely, enigmatic centre Joey Leilua has vowed to give his all for the club until he leaves at the end of the season.

I give 100 per cent, whatever team I play for. There's no doubting that ... I'm just going to do my job and hopefully the fans can remember me in a good way.

Speaking for the first time since it was announced three weeks ago that he had triggered a get-out clause in his contract, allowing him to be released from his 2016 deal with Newcastle, the Samoan international told the Newcastle Herald his decision was made in the pre-season.

At that point he appeared on the outer, having been told by Knights coach Rick Stone he was likely to start the season in NSW Cup, behind first-choice centre pairing Dane Gagai and teenage Test star Sione Mata'utia.

"They told me there was a good chance of me not playing in round one, because of Sione coming through, and I said, 'If you think that, I'm going to look for another club. I deserve to play first grade'," Leilua said.

"So since round one I've been looking for another club."

He said it had been "disappointing" to find his position under scrutiny for the first time in his NRL career.

"Up until then I was happy," he said. "I was under Wayne [Bennett] before Stoney. I mean Stoney's a good coach, but I came here to be around Wayne, for him to teach me something new, because he's a great coach."

The heavyweight outside back, who played in the Roosters' 2010 grand final loss to St George Illawarra as an 18-year-old rookie, said he reached the realisation that he "needed a change" to realise his potential.

"I was going to go at the beginning of the year when they were thinking of not picking me for round one.

"That was the reason I asked my manager to search for another club who wanted me.

"Then they played me in round one, so I was pretty happy about that, but by then other clubs really wanted me."

He said nothing was finalised but it was "most likely" he would sign with Canberra, where his cousin, back-rower Sia Soliola, is based. He also has a relationship with Raiders coach Ricky Stuart, who selected him as a standby player for NSW in 2012.

"He chose me as 18th man for Origin, so he must see something in me," he said.

Having observed the Raiders at close quarters in last week's 44-22 loss at Hunter Stadium, he has no doubt they are a team on the rise.

"They definitely are," he said. "They've got a young side. Good team bonding, I think.

"There's no big names in there, but they seem to be playing well together."

If the opportunity arose for a mid-season switch, Leilua said he had already informed Knights officials he would be interested.

"It's not my decision," he said. "I've already put in an application to leave. That could be before June 30, or definitely at the end of the year.

"I'm not too sure about June 30. We'll see how we go, what the club wants from me.

"If they don't really want me, I should just leave."

All the indications from Newcastle's management and coach Stone have been that they need him for the entire season, in which case Leilua assured fans he would be fully committed.

"I go out there every game trying to give 100 per cent, even if I'm injured or sore," he said.

"I give 100 per cent, whatever team I play for. There's no doubting that ... I'm just going to do my job and hopefully the fans can remember me in a good way. I'm going to show them for the rest of the year that I've put my best foot forward for the team."

Leilua has been much maligned at times for his handling mistakes, but he said that was the flip side of trying to score and create tries.

With 30 tries in 54 games, he has scored more four-pointers for Newcastle over the past three years than any player except winger Akuila Uate (35 in 52).

"You're definitely going to make errors in games," he said. "I don't think there's one player that's never made an error.

"You try not to, but obviously there's a couple of errors in my game. I just try to make plays, and if you pull them off, you get praised, and if not, people criticise you.

"It's a fine line, but you've just got to do your job and try to win games."

As for his reputation for avoiding the media spotlight, Leilua indicated it was not necessarily at his own request.

"Sometimes it's my choice. Sometimes I don't feel too well," he said with a smile.

"When it comes to media, I don't mind. I don't shy away from it. But if I've got something on my mind, I don't really want to get in trouble for saying it. I speak my mind."

f**k me dead, can we PLEASE move this dropkick on now? What an embarrassing piece. Fact he had to actually do something about remaining in the side when there was someone like Sione right behind him and instead said "Nah f**k that, I'm gone" shows how shit his attitude is.

He's not going to care about playing here if we keep him and we're probably better off by offloading him before June 30.

Christ, if only Stuart was coaching NSW back in 2009. I wonder if Bellamy is after a 2nd rower mid season?

I would release him now. Then we might be able to get Shillo in return and another decent forward.

FFS. Bye BJ. That kind of attitude highlights perfectly what is wrong with the club at the moment.

Let him go and worry another club.

Don't need or want him for the rest of this year if that's his attitude.

Happy to see him going as I feel he is definitely more hindrance than help.

he's performed week in week out, more than you can say for a heap of his team mates atm. sounds like he's been scapegoated here

How does one get scapegoated when they come out an openly declare they want out? He is leaving. We didn't force him out. As for his performing that is debatable.

Don't let his occasional diamonds blind you. He's missed more tackles this season than anyone in the team. Take a look at his game against the Raiders for example before thinking he's being made a scapegoat. We have a lot of bad performers this year but apart from the first couple of rounds BJ has been one of our poorest...made worse as always by the horrible attitude.

That's not even getting into the brain explosions in attack, skipping out on mandatory club functions, returning to pre season late + 10kgs over weight and the reported lazy attitude to training (to the point where senior players were blowing up at him) either. Sometimes it doesn't matter how good someone's diamonds can be. If they cause so much stress they're not worth it...as the Roosters already discovered with him.

this i'm not privvy too and if it's correct, then i can understand the angst, but obviously it's just going off your word.

as far as his onfield performances are concerned, he is FAR FAR FAR away from your worst, especially considering some of the bigger names. and if he says he's gonna perform no matter what and actually do it, he should be entitled to ask whatever he wants

It would be so us to sack Joey and then go on a run and come up one game shy of the top 8. Similar to last year. If he is that disruptive that he puts every one else on edge it won't hurt having him go. Bring Chanel through. I am sure having his brother in the side will elevate Sione's performance.

You cannot discount the effect of a talented but polarising footballer. Sounds like our former fullback although Boyd was a very different situation. He did his best with his mental demons hanging over him.

It's not my word. That stuff is common knowledge in Newcastle. The Newcastle journos are very connected to what happens at the club (sometimes too much so) so their scoops there are correct pretty much all the time.

And if you're saying what I think you're saying with the second part then surely you're joking? This is a bloke that came back to pre season training late, 10kgs overweight, and then chucked the shits and started looking for another club because the coach said that Mata'utia (who had just played for Australia and came back to pre season early) might get the jump in front of him (and Stone still picked BJ round 1 anyway). Now he's crying to the media that the Knights don't want him despite the fact that any other coach would have got him sacked already for the shit attitude and not honouring his off field commitments and Stone has already come out and said he didn't want BJ to leave. BJ is entitled to nothing as far as I'm concerned. He's luckily he still has a contract let alone still in first grade.

Also your comments about him performing and being far from our worst are very debatable. Our biggest issue at the moment by far is our defence and attitude in that area and BJ is currently our worst defensive player. He has more natural skill than a lot of the others...but Jeez, he's not using enough of it at the moment to make up for the horrific reads in defence.
