Not saying they can't stand him down, I'm saying the club can't sack him and the NRL can't deregister him until he admits to it or the court decides he's guilty.

While I definitely see your point, they need to stop f*cking around, it's a vicious media cycle - the media build players up to celebrity status, thereby making it difficult for them to go out on their own whim as normal citizens do, and then the odd dickhead tries to rile them up, the media latch onto the event, and victimise the player. It goes on and on... although in this case it does appear that Bird is in the wrong - there are certain cases where the media is at fault. I feel sorry for players on a lot of levels because really, they shouldn't have the cult status they do - it's not good for the image, particularly when they fall.

Apologies if that makes no sense

Yes the media do have an impact on players. I'm very sure Benji and $BW said they had trouble coping with the Sydney media last year. I can imagine all the fame/pressure on Andrew Johns when he was back playing in Newcastle. But still that shouldn't be an excuse to end up in such incidents.

Also I wonder if Fox Sports will remove that ad where they say all the players last names and Bird is the last one standing next to the two guys.

the AFL have the following clause in their rules and contracts

"The Commission may at any time and on such conditions as it thinks fit cancel
or suspend the registration of a Player where it is of the opinion that such
Player has conducted himself in a manner unbecoming of an AFL Player or
likely to prejudice the reputation or interests of the AFL or to bring the game of
football into disrepute."

I'd find it truly amazing if the NRL did not have such a clause, somewhere. Surely.

If they do, i can't see how he can stay. Carney was de-registered without police charges. This is in another Galaxy to Carney.

Timmah - are you f**king kidding me?

Yes, the media are partly to blame when blokes get harrassed when out at a pub drinking.

But when they allegedly go home and glass their missus in the living room? F**ked up stuff! Don't know who is guilty, don't really care, I just hope they get a decent penalty for this action & this young woman can recover.

Never forget what Greg Bird is - a bitch first and foremost.

Greg Bird has tarnished the Cronulla Sharks image and it shouldn't be that club to help him put his dummy back in his mouth.

The club shouldn't have been brought into this matter to begin with.

Our court system and laws will see to it that Bird gets out of it.

Our laws favor the criminals.

Why am I not surprised, that "story" that was on the news about this incident seemed a PR exercise. Bet you Cronulla don't sack him!

Please! That ad is so annoying, I hope it's in the bin already.

I have been a die hard sharks fan for nearly as long as the club has existed. I have lived through all the crap we get dished by many of you guys and many before you, but I think you will find that while most Sharks supporters wish this wasn't true, we do not want anyone, be it Greg Bird or anyone else, if they behave in this way. If he plays I will not cheer him on, I don't want him on the park at all. If he isn't and our season is over so be it, I can take more taunts from those of you that want to remind us of our record but this guy is a disgrace to my club and us as Sharks supporters. Please leave Greg Bird.

As a Sharks supporter my only concern here is with the victim.

Bird denies glassing girlfriend

Bailed: Greg Bird must not contact his girlfriend, Katie Milligan. (ABC)

A Sydney court has heard that NRL player Greg Bird tried to blame someone else for a glassing attack on his girlfriend at his apartment at the weekend.
The Cronulla Sharks five-eighth is accused of smashing 24-year-old Katie Milligan in the face with the glass during an argument at his Cronulla home yesterday.
The Crown told the court neighbours were woken by a loud thud. One neighbour heard a loud voice saying "Stop being a f...ing idiot". The neighbour said he recognised the voice.
The neighbours allegedly heard a girl say "Why did you do this to me?" and a man reply "I didn't do it" with the girl saying "Yes, you did".
Ms Milligan suffered a fractured eye socket and glass wounds to the eye. She is seeing an eye specialist today and may require surgery.
Bird spent the night behind bars after being arrested and charged with maliciously inflicting grievous bodily harm.
He looked tense as his lawyer applied for bail on his behalf at Sutherland Local Court this morning.
The prosecution said Bird had been actively trying to deceive police over the incident and tried to blame another person called Mr Watson, who had received a text message while Bird was being interviewed.
The text message allegedly said, "My manager is trying to sort this s..t out".
Prosecutors argued Bird should not be granted bail because it was an extremely serious offence that carries a maximum penalty of 25 years.
But his lawyer's successfully argued he was not a flight risk and said the prosecution's case was based on circumstantial evidence.
The magistrate granted Bird $5,000 bail on the condition he not contact Ms Milligan until his next court appearance in October.
The defence said the case would be strongly contested.

God, even I get the original Wally comment - both were Australian five-eighths. Duh.

He was just saying that Bird is not going to be the next Wally now, and laughing at media comparisons (poosibly because of their similar build) that he was ever going to be.

A low life who glasses a woman/his girlfriend/anyone doesn't deserve sympathy.

Players "out on the drink" need to realise they are being paid megabucks in some cases (and above the average salary in all cases) and even when "not working" they still have a responsibility to represent their "employer" in the most positive light.

If that means not just being able to be an average yahoo down at the local pub (or the sapphire lounge) then that's simply the price they pay for the moolah and fame of their chosen role. They want the big bucks (and all of them do with their managers and contratc negotiations and the like) then it's natural there is some cost involved - it would be the same for any "professional" on that amount of money.

The media are f**ked - always have been, always will be - but let's not make out the players dfon't have a long way to go across the board, whether it's alcohol, attitudes to women, or just simple common sense and keeping clear of trouble on a regular Saturday night.

Guys - ease up, I said here I very clearly do not condone what Bird has done - he's an absolute twat and I hope they punish him to the max if/when he is found guilty. I'm making a wider reference (probably in the wrong thread admittedly) that the media plays a huge role in hyping these guys up and then takes pleasure when they fall. Not denying a single shred of wrong doing in this event.

Obviously, it's in the victims best interests for Bird to play in the NRL finals... I think that's what sharko was trying to say

I can't see any player having respect for the cretin on the field - it would be in his own best interests to stand aside to be honest.

Witnesses tell of yelling between Greg Bird and girlfriend

James Madden | August 25, 2008

NRL star Greg Bird allegedly glassed his girlfriend in the face and then tried to blame his flatmate for the attack.
Bird, 24, was released on $5000 bail this morning after last night being charged with maliciously inflicting grievous bodily harm on his American girlfiend Katie Milligan during an alleged early-morning altercation at his unit in Cronulla, in Sydney's south.

Ms Milligan, 24, is expected to have surgery today on her fractured eye socket.

Bird spent the night in jail after police interviewed him for almost six hours and this morning he appeared in Sutherland Local Court.

Police opposed bail, with police prosecutor Matt Zalunardo telling the court that Bird had "actively tried to deceive" police.

Mr Zalunardo said Bird had "tried to pin the offence" on his flatmate Greg Watson.

The court heard that while Mr Watson was being interviewed by police, Bird sent him a text message saying: "My manager is helping to sort this s..t out".

Witnesses have told police that Mr Watson was at Blacktown Golf Club, not the Cronulla unit, at 7.30am on Sunday, when the alleged attack took place.

A neighbour of Bird's said he heard the Cronulla Shark star yell: "Stop being a f...king idiot."

Soon after, Ms Milligan and Bird were seen leaving the apartment.

A witness told police they heard Ms Milligan say to Bird: "Why did you do this to me?"

Bird allegedly replied: "I didn't do it."

Ms Milligan said: "Yes, you did."

Mr Zalunardo said "grave fears" were held for the safety of Ms Milligan.

But Bird's lawyer, Les Nicholls, told the court that the case against his client was circumstantial and that the charge would be strongly defended.

Ms Milligan has yet to give a statement to police.

The court was also told that police were investigating a separate alleged attack by Bird on a woman earlier this year.

The matter will return to court in October.

My point is that it is not relevant. What does this supposed comparioson add to this thread ?

Why make a point to laugh at the media comparisons, no-one here was making these comparisons. It was not relevant and stupid.
