I can mate i remember the GF & the GF replay. I can actually remember the 1976 grand final. Who was captain of the 1976 side?

Even though they had an ordinary year Robson, Mortimer, Keating, Mateo, Humble would all be better options than Burt setting up play & kicking. He's a winger mate nothing more. IMO he should a Reserve Grade winger.

Mate you don't have to make comments when you don't know what you're talking about.

Well I beg to differ.

I am no way a Luke Burt fan. Not even on the wing. Read my history from day one. I think he is too small physically and I don't understand why oppositions don't bomb him every chance they get. He doesn't like taking the ball on the full and I don't think he puts his body on the line since his injury. But that is a different story.

Short and Long - Mateo would be the better option but he is no longer with us.

Actually, I have been a strong advocate for Mateo at 6 but in my mind, DA thought it was risky. Funny how when our season had the slimmest of hope, he allowed Mateo to play his natural game.

Back to the topic, that leaves Robbo and Mortz and Humble.

There is no difference with them and with Burt. In the past, Burt has setup alot of plays as a 2nd receiver and you're kidding me if R, M or H can kick better than him.

So you don't believe in free speech. Hmmm, maybe you should goto China !! hahhahahaha

Mr Cheng. I'm not kidding you because the three guys mentioned all played in the halves in 2010 & Burt didn't. There's a reason for that. I think DA knows a bit more than you & I.

Agree with all your comments about Burt. He won't take a bomb & doesn't phyisically impose himself on a game. It's alright to hang & the wing & wait for things to happen. I lot of hard stuff needs to be done first & the guy gets dominated every time because he is too small for a NRL winger. Imagine him up against Vatuvei Tiquiri Morris & even the Grothe. Please.

I do believe in free speech but I don't like to make comments on things i know nothing about. China doesn't interest me one little bit.

That's also fine by me but if MOrtz is 6, make sure he plays the 1 role in support when Hayne does that. Otherwise, what is Mortz role? 40 million tackles. His biggest asset is his support play. But we don't see him supporting.

When Hayne plays second receiver, Mortz is player number 0. He has nothing to do so get him to play the support role. It's about communication between Hayne and Mortz. Not oh, Hayne jumped into second receiver so I'll just get my notepad out and watch and take notes.

I am fine with players playing different roles to their strengths but in 2010, they are not.

He will play a support role when the forwards start offloading and passing before the line. When there is no second phase and half breaks there is nothing to support. I think he still offers far more than anyone on this board believes.

That's correct but should be done at Wenty not at the expense of the NRL club. I would have mortz at 6 if we had a decent half. But alas, we don't.

But you want to experiment with an untested player at 7 and a player that has been tried and failed before at 6? Strange logic.

Hayne is best at fullback because he can chime in when needed. What is required is the forwards and ball runner to be a little more creative and the second phase will happen. Hayne and Mortimer will then get the ball in broken play when they like it.

I'd rather & out & out finisher like Morris or Tiquiri. Wingers do as many hitups as a front rower these days & having a winger who only comes in the game when second phase & half breaks occur is a waste. Wingers do lots of dummy half runs & take bombs but Burt is not good at either of these. 2. Atkins 5. Grothe would be my wingers in 2011. He's a not a FB & is definately not a 5/8.

Great?????
Eric Grothe Snr, Wendell Sailor, Ken Irvine were great. How dare you put Burt in their company.
FB is usually the go to man now - Burt will never be a go to man.

He's an out & out Reserve grader - in all positions.

the thing is out of next years pack, how many of the forwards are noted offloaders?

Hindy and maybe a bit of Horo.

I can't recall if Cannings, um I meant Webb offloads or not.

Well any combo of halves next year are not tried and tested at NRL level.

Robbo and Mortz had a good half a season out of 4 x half seasons.

Hayne was tried there yes but he wasn't the same player then. When Hayne was there, he didn't throw those passes you see nowadays nor the kicks behind the line.

I mean, remember the time when Hayne kicked to INU and INU casually scored. Fullbacks don't do those type of kicks. A good half/5/8th does.

I just feel that we Hayne covering 6 and someone else covering 1 is a better than Hayne at 1 and a nuffy at 6.

To complement Hayne, I would like a decent kicker. And thus, I chose Burt. If Murray has a good kick on him and is no liability in defense, then I would entertain

6. Hayne
7. Mortz.

.

And DA got punted and DA stuck with Mortz at 7. Just because they played there and didn't succeed meant that they are a better option.

Mr Engineer says that we tried Hayne at 6 and it didn't work so why play Hayne at 6.

Then using similar logic, we shouldn't play Mortz, Robbo, Humble in the halves either because we tried them too and it didn't work

Don't forget the sh*t load of cutout passes that he's pulled off this year. I don't think i've seen more from any halfback/5/8 this year.
It's true that Hayne was a failed experiment at 5/8 but as you said before, he was more of a pure ball-runner back then who merely potential as a ball player too.
Now he's just a freak who does everything, I'd personally welcome Hayne at 6 again if the situation calls for it.
Although, first I'd like for us to explore some of our depth in the halves.
6. Morts 6. Humble 6. Burt/Barba
7. Humble 7. Murray 7. Murray/Humble

Some of them aren't exactly the best options, but as a team I doubt we are liable for being picky about it.
I'd also consider your suggestion at Burt in the halves at some point. I'm sure a lot of us have seen the countless times Burt has set up a linebreak for Hayne on a kick return. That's not pure luck nor is it Burt being a weak little softcock as sefton would be so inclined to think, it's Burt being able to effectively use his vision to set up Hayne.
Also, whenever he's been called up on to kick on last tackle options, I hardly remember any of them being absolute shockers, there should be little doubt on the accuracy in his kicking game, take into account that he calls the shots on field goals, I think he can handle the pressure from other teams as well.
Honestly, it is a pretty outland-ish thought, but when it comes to halves, what have we got to lose at this point?

Cheng you've got no idea. TO suggest Burt's got the BEST long & short kicking game & is best at setting up plays in the opp 20. He's a winger always was always will be...and an ordinary one at that.
Go back to China dopey.
Why the f**k would you even need to add that?
Great, you hate Burt, but at least keep your idiocy to something more acceptable.

Fair enough that is your opinion. I am only pointing out that Hayne can still play second receiver from the back. I don't see why Mortimer should be so easily discarded. You can't just throw someone that hasn't played there before the number 7 and expect instant success, it takes time to learn to play there.

He played half the season at five-eight - and did no better.

Mate, I said besides Hayne.

In our current squad today, who do you think have the best short, long kicking game besides Hayne at NRL LEVEL?

Who do you think is the best who sets up plays in the opposition 20 besides Hayne?

I would really like to know your opinion.

BTW, how long have you lived in Australia? Do you remember the 1977 grand final?

Luke Burt, definitely. And daylight third. (Or maybe Tom Humble third?)

To be fair, Humble played ONE game at five-eight (he played well and we beat Manly. That was his NRL debut). The other five games he played wing, centre, hooker and half a game at half. See, the funny thing in all of this conjecture about our halves is that Humble has not been given a go yet. He is an unknown quantity with a very big reputation at five-eight in the QLD cup, and is a player who plays better in first grade than he does at Wenty. Also, Sefton Boy is very rude. I don`t know why you bother to reply to him.

I don't think he is boy, more like an old codger. hahahah.

Well I won't discriminate against someone who can't express himself civilly.

For all we know, he might have bi-polar or a mental disease or just on the grog too much.

I like Tim Smith and he has bi-polar and he is fighting demons.

Seftonboy can sometimes make a decent argument too.

Yer I reckon Hayne is suited to a 5/8, I'm sure at some stage in his career he will play there again.

I'd like us to experiment with some other options such as Humble, Murray etc. If they can kick and defend well it's a start and better then what we have at the moment.

Yeah, we get it...you don't like Burt. But you'll forgive me if I take credence the opinions of the 4 straight coaches who have picked him in first grade over the last ten years as opposed to the views of one anonymous (and clearly racist, not really a plus in the brains column) nuffy on a forum.

To be fair, I seem to remember Mortimer and Robson working as well once upon a time...

To be honest i dont think hayne can cut the mustard at 5/8
From what ive noticed of hayne he has all the skills and tricks anyone can wish for but he cant organise unlike lockyer who has less the athletic ability or flair but can count the numbers and organise a team. Each time hayne has tried to take complete control he looks like a fish out of water. He is a terrific fullback and a great suprise when he decides to chime in-But dont ask him to run the team-Maybe in 3 yrs when he is 25 but not yet.....

I agree.. also i think the Defence would get to hayne he doesnt have to tackle at fullback and that leaves him fresh to attack. Karmichael Hunt and Hayne are similar players and whenever Hunt got moved into the halves he struggled cause he was making tackles and the opposition targeted him. I believe the same would happen if hayne got moved to 6.
