He was one of the constants while we were strong but chokers. We weren't mediocre until the end of his career though.

IMO - Brian Smith left this club in a mess. How long would that normally take to fix? Not sure. But Denis Fitzgerald and co. created such instability in successive boards that they were pressured into quick-fix solutions which led to ridiculous recruitment/retention decisions as well as a revolving door situation regarding the hiring and firing of coaches. This instability caused our mediocrity and also made it take a hell of a lot longer to get out of. To single out individual players just doesn't make sense.

contracts aren't worth the paper they are written on

Yes they are!! I hate how this is always mentioned, it is fake news !!

They are worth a lot, no player or club has terminated a legal contract.

Yes plenty of players or clubs have tried to break them

A club may try to more a player on, but unless the player agrees they are stuck with them!!

There are plenty of examples of clubs being stuck with contracted players. That's why we always hear about clubs and their "f**ked up" cap position.

For example like the knights currently and Eels/Dragons / tigers over the last few years.

Well said.

People who say "contracts aren't worth the paper they are written on" don't understand basic contract law.

Hayne is now a nobody.
Karma is a funny thing and time has caught up with him. Since he walked on the game Mitchel,Bevan,Turbo tom,Munster,Holmes,Ponga have emerged.
Tedesco, wighton, moylan, rts have become great options and Dugan, coote,Boyd still have solid form.

Coaches dont want the media circus Hayne brings. If he doesnt finish his Titans 2yr deal clubs would fail to take him seriously. And if he does he will start 2019 at 31.

Unless Hayne reproduces his 2014 form he will fade away leaving the game with a bit of a stain and sour memory, rather then a great.

Bull $hit
Smith was always planning for the future. He went thru eras at parra wherre he built a team then had to have a bad season and rebuild.
Hagan reaped the benefits in his first season. But started the rot.
2009 was worse thing that could happen. For half the season we stunk. After it we extended guys who where not first graders. Held onto moimoi to long, MK,smith, mortimer etc.....

SK walked into a disaster of a squad and a cap mess. And made it worse by trying to build a respectable team with has beens.
Hate or love him ricky made quick tough decision and recruited Norman.

Hayne hasn't completed a contract since 2012!

Im not dishing on him. But like Inglis if he was available for next season would you throw a million at him? Sure top 3 fullback on his day but i jury prone and reaching twighlight of career.

The fact so many good young fullback have emerged de values these guys a little.

He should only have been worth $600K for this contract - poor finish to his final league season, two years out of the game, different physique due to trying two different codes, doubts over his ability to see out a contract.

Hopefully that's what we offered him. Titans (Annesley) got sucked in by the Hayne hype big time! If he walks at the end of this season without taking up the option, as Twix says his next contract should be 500K max.

No he didn't!! We made the finals 3 times in the 4 years after he left. We also had good depth in the following years - Think we won a few NSW cup GF plus we also made an under 20's GF. This is all because Smith and his brains trust had a "whole" club approach.

So was Hagan / Anderson responsible for building our squad / depth in 2007-2009 ? Or was it some forward planning?

Then Hagan took over and didn't really look after the juniors pathway followed by another 2 years of Anderson. Then everyone was amazed that in 2011 Kearney (yeah he made mistakes but it wasn't all his fault) couldn't get a shit squad to the finals!!

The biggest f**k up (in my opinion) was not appointing Taylor instead on Hagan.

Interestingly Hagan / Anderson (moved on from both of his post NRL coaching jobs) has never had another NRL coaching gig after leaving us. Taylor is onto his second NRL coaching job, while Smith also had 2 other jobs (both with the task of rebuilding), he also made another GF.

The Knights made the finals after Smith left the club. And the year after smith left the Roosters they won the GF (and minor premiers a few times too). So it appears Smith does leave clubs in a pretty good shape (I agree he does choke in big games but).

By 2019 how many new young fullbacks will emerge?

He may have to move to centre.

Look id be happy to offer him the 250k semi was on and throw him on the wing.

Semi is worth $500k easy in 2018.

That boy Oates from the Broncos just re-signed for $400k.

Hayne left us when he was under contract, He said he wanted to go play NFL, BA agreed to let him go. In this case the player wanted out so he went.

Clubs also release players from their contract due to salary cap restrictions, yet the players are under contract so effectively the players have no protection. Just because some one is under contract doesn't mean they will see it out. In this case, clubs let players go, it works both ways

For what ever reason, it happens.

If a club wants to let a player go who is under contract Id say they would have to pay him thou. Or make up his difference at another club.
