Is Jarryd Hayne lazy? Its never been questioned his work ethic, but after his stellar season in 2009 he has never reached those heights again despite showing signs of his talent. I could be reading too much into this article but it was originally reported he was fined for slacking off at training although Hayne has slammed the accuracy of this since it has came out.
Hayne has all the talent, but training is very important to being the complete player as well. It's very easy to get into the habit of living off your natural talent and not trying to improve your game. He is human though, I know Andrew Johns and Wally Lewis have been accused at times of slacking off at training during their careers. I know Johns came into one season a bit heavier then he would have liked to have been.
However no one has ever accused Hayne of not playing hard on the rugby league field.
"JARRYD Hayne has denied reports he was fined by his Titans teammates for a poor attitude to pre-season training, hitting out as pressure already begins to mount on the Gold Coast’s marquee man.
Hayne’s conditioning has been the talk of rugby league town over summer, culminating in multiple weekend reports that the code-hopper had been fined up to “a five-figure amount” by the club’s senior leadership group.
After battling a knee injury to take his place in
the Titans round one loss to the Roosters, Hayne made his frustrations public via Twitter late on Sunday night.
In a somewhat cryptic tweet, he claimed coach Neil Henry had fined him for travelling to Sydney for treatment without his express permission, Hayne having been granted it by one of the club’s co-captains Ryan James or Kevin Proctor.
In another tweet Hayne dubbed journalists “grubs”, while a day earlier he took aim at veteran
News Corp reporter and host of
Fox Sports NRL 360 Paul Kent over a column in which he suggested Hayne had pulled out of Parramatta fixture to attend a concert the night before.
Hayne’s commitment to training has long been a source of frustration and bemusement, former teammate Nathan Hindmarsh once famously declared him the worst trainer he has seen.
The 29-year-old has previously admitted to struggling in the Queensland heat in his first pre-season on the Gold Coast, having reported for duty at 106 kilos.
In January Henry revealed Hayne had “come back a bit heavy” and been told to drop “four or five kilos” from his 2016 playing weight.
Henry conceded Hayne was “underdone” in Saturday’s 32-18 loss, his first hit out since pulling up lame at the Auckland Nines.
The star custodian scored a try but managed just 19 touches for nine runs and 68 metres at the back, swapping between wing and fullback with Will Zillman throughout the contest.
“He was having a few rests on the wing,” Henry told the press afterwards.
“That’s part of the plan. We knew he’d go in at about 80 per cent but we needed him to get a run in.’’
The Titans had four players — Kevin Proctor, Dan Sarginson, Jarrod Wallace and Joe Greenwood — making their club debuts against the Roosters, while both Hayne and strike weapon Konrad Hurrell went into the clash without any pre-season football behind them.
Tipped to build on their giant killing run last season, the Gold Coast will be out for a stark improvement against the Knights in Newcastle.
For Hayne, never far away from the headlines, it’s another chance to ensure he’s in them for the right reasons.
Since returning from the NFL last September, he has been warned by the NRL Integrity Unit for consorting with criminals, after a scandalous video emerged of him partying with a Hells Angels member.
Hayne has also put noses out of joint by revealing his interest in pursuing overseas rugby when his current Titans deal expires next year, while his
leadership credentials and commitment copped a bashing from Kangaroos coach Mal Meninga last week."
