The real test will come in Round 20. Storm vs. Broncos - Friday night.

You couldn't have said it any better, smithie. As I said in another post, will Ch9 have the balls to show a live Storm game into Melbourne in primetime (i.e. Friday Night)? People who keep on harping on about the 37000 the game vs Penrith got into Melbourne forget that there's a substantial difference in the ratings between a live 7:30pm Friday game and a Sunday afternoon game. Not only to mention that there was near to no promotion in Melbourne for that Penrith match.

The Broncos match, if show live into Melbourne and PROPERLY promoted, will get no less than 150000-200000 into Melbourne. Combined with 300000+ in Brisbane and a potential 500000+ into Sydney for the Parra/Bulldogs match (which they did get earlier in the year, but will depend on how both teams are travelling by Rd 20), the Friday Night 7:30pm timeslot that weekend could get close to 1,000,000 viewers across Sydney/Brisbane/Melbourne. The Broncos and Storm have a good rivalry.

Another great opportunity to show another live primetime game into Melbourne is the Storm's Rd 22 fixture vs Dragons. That will also rate very well into Melbourne.

If ever I was happy and wanted to be utterly depressed, all I have to do is go ontl a LU thread about c9 showing RL into Melbourne.

When they dont do it they are merkins

When they DO do it they are merkins.

Now they are doing it to "devalue" a TV deal? Are you f*cking kidding? That's like telstra halving their sponsorship money because Cronulla once got a poor crowd.

Personally I think they would have been better off showing the same delayed telecast as we get. I am usually still out at 3 on a sunday, more likely to be home closer to dinner.

But good on C9 for showing the game into Melbourne.

As for this gathering place for the manically depressed - the world is about to end. Empty stadium, wrong time, no money for TV rights in next contract - what else can you whingers find wrong? Wrong feng shui?

You're missing the point 'strat.

To build an audience people need to know that they'll get to watch it every week, or every second week...not just once a year as is usually the case, or in the case of 2011, 3 times. They need some sort of continuity. The Brisbane v Storm game in round 9 would have been the perfect game to play live into Melbourne but it wasn't.

And it's not like they're plugging it from arsehole to breakfast either.

Then again...

AFL have plugged the Swans unmercifully for more than a decade in Sydney, every game is live and they have f**k all to show for it now. So maybe 9 have decided to do the opposite to that laughingly unsuccessful model.

Who knows... But it's hard not to be suspicious of 9, they've f**ked the non-heartland audiences around from day 1.

Last time they showed a fri night Storm V Broncos game into Melb..it got 203K.(2008 or 2009).
I think Mc'chins was still in charge & made sure that it never happened again.
If RL can rate like that(about triple what the Swans get in Syd live) on a FRi night,& 9 still dont show it then i too question their motives.

It was mentioned on a few different internet sites but there would've been little advertising from Channel 9 in Melbourne, inevitably.. good to see they kept to their word for once

I don't watch ANY TV during the week so can't speak as to wether or not it was advertised but somehow I doubt Nein did anything to let people know it was on. The only way I knew was from reading the paper when the tele guide came out on Wednesday as well as mentions on Facebook etc.

The Tigepies game is live as well?!?! Holy shite!

Look, the time really has come for Nine to nut up or shut up and gague some sort of idea about how much interest in RL there is in Melbourne by showing Storm games. They have FINALLY got it right with Origin and the ANZAC Test by showing them live. Really, this whole "it doesnt rate" argument cannot really wash anymore. Swans games do not rate in Sydney but at least the AFL have the foresight and the accumen to enforce their contract. Meanwhile, the NRL have an ambiguous "before midnight" clause in their contract for RL in Melbourne. Let the IC take over, have someone look at the pros and cons of RL for Nine Melbourne and come to an agreement that is beneficial. I don't give a f**k if they negotiate it to be shown on digital but league needs to have a presence on the box down here.

Quote from nine on its WWOS Facebook page:

Wide World of Sports It is indeed great to see Nine taking Storm games live into Victoria. This will of course only happen when the Storm is playing away from home, and when the kick-off time fits in with other programming. Still, it's a good step forward and a win for league fans in Victoria.

"Of course" it will only happen if Storm is playing away and it fits with other programming. ie. Don't expect us to show NRL live if another repeat of Mogambo is scheduled!

So that pretty much says that Storm v Broncos isn't live in a few rounds.

Being a current Melbourne resident I sat down and watched yesterday. Pretty bloody chuffed to watch 2 games of NRL live on free-to-air this year with another to come.

Ive also noticed that Nein has been showing FNF at the "respectable" hour of 11.30pm lately also. So they are going the full on suck-up to the NRL at the moment.

I think that this might be the best we get when the 4 hour from live kick off criteria starts in the next anti-siphoning agreement. Id personally be happier with 9.30 or even 10pm start, but from 12.30am to 11.30pm is better than a poke in the eye with a blunt stick.

There were a few commercials that went along the lines of 'Melbourne's former favourite son, Greg Inglis, faces the Storm for the first time' which wasn't horrible. But it wasn't saturated like the Swans in Sydney.

But even without Adelaide and Perth, NRL strongly out-rated the AFL.

As for Friday night games... Well it may be because I've only just moved down to Melbourne, but 11:30pm is way too late... Heaven forbid if you want to watch the second game kicking off at 1:30am.
