Just watching teh rugby world cup on ch 10 the games are being shown in High Definition and 5.1 sound.

Awesome quality and the 5.1 sound gives you the feel of being in the stadium watching the game.

HD sure works better for Rugby than the AFL which is more blurry with the ball being kicked all the time.

Question is isnt it about time channel 9 upgrade next year to HD and 5.1 sound especially in our World cup year.

Rugby Union needs High definition and 5.1 sound to make the games exciting.

4 Penalty goals each and 1 try in the whole game. Rather watch grass grow...

I saw mention of this earlier this year (I think on this very forum), that Nein were looking to phase it into their coverage over the course of next (this?) season. Starting with games played at stadiums like the SFS, Telstra and Suncorp that already have first class infrastructure (presumably fibre cabling and/or Gigabit network backbones). And then more gradually for games at the remaining stadiums.

But that forum post is the only mentioned I've heard of it.

Good Point.

the picture quality and Audio quality of last nights game was Terrible.

IF your watching the nine coverage on anything bigger than a 42 inch screen the quality is well below par.

Hopefully nine and Fox sports go HD in the very near future.

The only pay TV channels that will be going HD in 2008 are the movie channels. That includes the fta broadcasters through pay television; they'll be staying SD for the time being; you'll need a separate tuner yo watch their HD coverage.

I was shocked that they didnt bring it in for Origin. It cant be that hard technically.

Not according to this thread over at the DTV forums.

Either way though movies and sports will be first to go HD on foxtel , they are the biggest drivers of subscriptions.

Its not hard just expensive.

considering the budget cuts going on at Nine over the last year to get it ready for its sale its understandable ( but annoying) why they havent gone HD for sport yet.

That was shot by the NZ host broadcaster. They have lower production budgets over there.

yeah i understand that but ultimatley Nine are responsible for what goes to air on their network.

either way even their normal coverage is very poor on a big screen TV.

No they aren't. They can't produce their own video footage. Like any sporting competition everywhere in the world, the host broadcaster(in this case Sky NZ) is responsible for the video footage.

If nine wanted an better picture broadcast of that game they could contribute to the production costs of the host boradcaster. Even what nine normally dish up is a lot better than the poor picture quality of the game last night.

BTW- just switched on to the start of the Wallabies game to see the HD broadcast and it sh*ts all over anything nine have dished up this year, and the 5.1 sound is awesome!

its almost enough to make the union bearable. But thats the only 2 mins of this world cup ill be watching.

Just another reason not to go to the game itself. That's the problem, the better the coverage becomes, the less people will go to the games.

sky tv didnt get the rights, TV3 is covering it and you can see they are not used to covering live footy.

Picture quality is absolute crap, like watching a 20 yr old vid.

Sky is much better, digital.

On monday night the Tigers V Roosters game will be the first ever NRL game broadcast in HD. It will be broadcast on the new Fox Sports HD channel that launches that day.

offcourse you will have to have an install lined up for monday , but still at least the world of HD has finally reached the NRL. Its no suprise that channel nine were beaten to the punch.
