Since the NRL began in 1998, the Dally M medalist has never gone on to win the grand final:

2008- Dally M medal Winner Matt Orford (Sea Eagles)- Premiers ????
2007- Dally M medal Winner Johnathan Thurston (Cowboys)- Premiers Storm
2006- Dally M medal Winner Cameron Smith(Storm)- Premiers Broncos
2005- Dally M medal Winner Johnathan Thurston (Cowboys)- Premiers Tigers
2004- Dally M medal Winner Danny Buderus (Knights) Premiers Bulldogs
2003- Dally M medal Winner Award ceremony cancelled
2002- Dally M medal Winner Andrew Johns (Knights) Premiers Roosters
2001- Dally M medal Winner Preston Campbell (Sharks) Premiers Knights

Apart from Melbourne in '06 not one of those winners were in a team that was expected to win the comp, and again no one expects Manly to win. If we don't win the comp this year it is because Melbourne are an awesome team or another team comes from relatively no where to surprise everyone, not because of a curse.

Well done Ox, you have done yourself and our club proud!!

Of course its completely unheard of that once a record is set, and that it might one day in the history of the world and human endevour, somehow inconceivably might be broken by another event from the same field.

surely they can retroactively award the awards? How hard would it be? I'm guessing they have the judges votes, just release them. If they don't well then they would definetely have the tapes, so get the judges this year to watch them, and you only need to from the time they went silent, give points and award all the positional and dally m awards. its unfair on gower/fittler/whoever deserved awards that year to miss out when they had a good season, and no one else has to miss out.

How is it unfair? The players themselves got it cancelled. They were going to boycott the event, so the NRL had no choice but to cancel it.

It was cancelled the week before the last round, so they'll have points up until the end of the 2nd last round.

No way should they give out the awards for that year. The players only have themselves to blame.

Almost the same with the Rothmans Medal. Only winners to win a comp were Langer in 92, Lamb in 84, and Pittard in 71 & 69.

Makes me wish Inglis had won it in a way.

Orford has by far the worst 5th tackle option of any Dally M winner, even Barrett who as i recall used to drop the ball as his 5th tackle option.
