The depth of the 88 Broncos squad could easily split in half to form a competitive 2nd Brisbane team. If anything, 88 should of had 2 Brisbane teams from the get go it would of done better for QLD rugby league overall instead Broncos monopolized rugby league in Brisbane.
But it's no secret that the Broncos don't want another league team but gladly accepts other sporting codes to gain ground in Brisbane. As seen by the times Lions/Reds get greater crowds in the 'league capital' in the early 00's with Lions and Reds a few years ago. :lol:
Wouldn't make a difference unless the directors knew how to run the club.
The Gold Coast Giants were effectively Brisbane 1B. They wanted the Broncos license, but fell out of favour with the key decision makers before Arthurson decided SE Queensland needed another side (and to get out of his agreement with the non-compete for the Broncos, based them in Tweed). They failed because the owners didn't know what they were doing and never got going.
Same deal with the Cowboys. Their management was ill-equipped to run a successful ARL side and nearly killed the club. Considering the depth of talent and the demand from the public, there really weren't any excuses.
As for opposition codes, a lot of those figures were coming off maiden premiership runs or selective comparisons. Reds may have had a better average in 2012, but they played 3 less regular season games and had a post-season game to add to their tally. Take the best 9 crowds from the Broncos that season and see how they compare.
