How did you all get involved in Rugby League....??

I was just paying a visit to one of the UK League Forums and they had a thread as above.

I am interested in how punters started their involvment with Rugby League.

I have posted "My Story" on my website.

It is a minor epic so I wont post it here - its here
http://www.eraofthebiff.com/p02-my.html

Basically My old Grandpop and my old dad took me to league when I was 8. That was a long time ago now. My old pop would tell me yarns about his beloved Newtown and Bumper Farrell. How St George stole Raper from them. etc etc.

I have a couple of truckloads of memories......

Cheers

Folr me it was when NZ TV first showed a Winfield Cup grand final in 1985. I was 12 at the time, and liked how much better than Union the game flowed, and was much more spectator friendly. By '91 or so they were showing the games on Friday and saturday nights and by that time I was hooked. I became a ref in '02 for the Auckland RL.

My Father introduced me to it when I was about 2, played until I was about 12, then shit happened. I Love it with a passion, and I'd love to play it one day again.

Went along to see my older brother play his games. Mainly I went for the lollies but started to like the game.

I was about 10 and in those days it was nothing for 6 or so of us kids to catch a train (from Gymea) and travel into Central Railway Station (and the station was above ground, not underground as it is now) and walk a mile or so to the SCG to watch the match of the day, (always on a Saturday and telecast live to all of Australia free on the ABC) or the fiery test matches in particular with the 'bloody' poms.

Can you imagine Mum and Dads of today allowing that to happen.!!!

Times have changed unfortunately

Ive lived in penrith my entire life
was born in 87, by the time i was old enough to know what league was it was 91 and Penrith had just gotten redemption for the year before on canberra. It was hard not to get into league at that time. My old lady is a mad Penrith fan she tried to get me into them, with little other choice i was a penrith fan untill about age 5 when they didnt appeal to me so i went on search for a new team.

not long latter i watched a few games, green was my favourite colour, watched a green team carve up some useless pile of shit and i was gone, Raiders fans ever since.

My dad supports Parra, mum Balmain, brother St George, sister Sharks, other sister Roosters. It's just in the family.

Growing up I had 3 favourite teams, Dragons, Raiders & Roosters. Dragons cause my older brother was a big influence, Raiders because they were the best at the time & Roosters because my sister took me to heaps of their games. If it wasn't for my brother I probrably would have gone for Roosters

I lived near the Wynnum-Manly football club, and went to a lot of their home games with a few mates, later I played for them for about 10 years.

I still follow them today, but I'm a broncos fan thru and thru.

Born in Victoria, which means that I had AFL rammed down my throat. Finally gave up on it by the time I was 20 (1990).

In 1998 I decided for some unknown reason to kick back with some alcohol and watch the AFL grand final on the Saturday afternoon. I turned the tv off at half time the game was so boring.

This meant I still had heaps of alcohol left and I noticed that the next day there was another grand final on tv, so I watched it and absolutely loved it even though I had little idea of the rules.

In 1999 Nein had nearly all the Storm games on tv on a Sunday afternoon. I watched a few, my girlfriend at that time had grown up in Canberra and was a mad Raiders supporter. She gave me some knowledge of the rules. We watched all of the Storm finals on tv.

In 2000, gf now ex-gf. I finally went along to my first RL game March 18 against Parramatta. Loved it even more than watching it on telly. Went to another 4 or 5 games that year.

2001 became Storm season ticket holder.

My dad and his family were all Valley's men, so it was really him and my grand-dad who got me into league. The broncos started in the comp when I was just 3 years old, and my 4th birthday pressie from my grand-dad was a broncs jersey and a night at Lang Park. I was hooked, and still am.

I was born into a South Sydney family. Fortunately I dodged that bullet when my family moved to the St George area when I was a toddler.

Still, my first ever game was Souths vs Cronulla at Redfern. For some reason I remember it vivdly. I wanted a flag & my Dad wouldn't buy one for me.

I see it as a privelige to barrack for a team like Saints. Successful & rich in history.

First game i saw was the 94 grand final. 95 was when i got into it. I loved rod wishart and the Illawarra steelers and North Sydney Bears, although they swapped places around 98 as the family genes took over and i supported the Bears, whilst still liking the Steelers. I tried at first to get into the dragons but i just couldnt. I wasnt into league as much from about 98-2002 but always loved it.

Similar for me, except with Parra. Taken along to first game age 5 ('78) at Henson Park (v Newtwon!). The 70s and 80s were great times for Parra in league, you couldn't be a kid then and not take an interest...

Moved into a house opposite Wests leagues club when I was 6.

Could that explain the chronic drinking problem ?????
