We have over a dozen off contract at the end of next season so I'm thinking 2014

The mess started when we hired a coach that did not want to either come to the club or live in Sydney

DF was so arrogant to sign the coach that beat the club in the 2001 GF that he apparently he was signed without any reference to the board etc.

That was the slippery dip as the focus went off our base and both Hagan and DA paid scant attention to building the club. We signed the most sought after asst coiach who proved to be a dud, I think we will do better next season, but salvation is at laast 2 years away.

Incoming coach Ricky Stuart has his work cut out rebuilding Parramatta Eels

By Dean Ritchie

Incoming coach Ricky Stuart, who attended Sunday night's match, faces a massive task to grow the club's shrinking credibility.

Cut through the emotion of Sunday night and Parramatta look skinny on depth, class and experience.

Hindmarsh and Burt deserved better than the lacklustre performance their teammates produced.

Stuart is a world-class coach but Burt and Hindmarsh might have been a little optimistic with their opinions on the future of the club.

"Better times are ahead for this club, I'm sure," Burt said. "It's definitely not the way we wanted to finish but that's footy."

Asked to predict Parramatta's short-term future, Hindmarsh said: "It's a bit too early to answer that.

"We have finished with the wooden spoon and I'm sure it will be a long, hard pre-season under Ricky.

"It's hard to gauge how good a team is going to be."

Of his final season, Hindmarsh said: "It's been a great year, kind of.

"It would have been nice to finish with a win but it doesn't always go your way. We should have trained harder but it was fun in the sheds playing cricket."

Thousands of Parramatta fans streamed on to ANZ Stadium after the match to cheer their heroes.

And Hindmarsh at least finished on a fun note when he landed a 22m penalty goal 10m in from touch.

Burt made a couple of errors but that shouldn't detract from a stellar career for a lightweight winger.

The Dragons controlled the game and sent retiring stars Ben Hornby and Dean Young out as deserved winners. Hornby scored a vital try in the 62nd minute.

Hindmarsh, Burt, Young and Hornby played a combined total of 1076 NRL matches - all as one-club players. "It's been an emotional day," Hornby said.

Young said: "It's been a pleasure to wear the Red V."

The Dragons led 8-6 at half-time and scored four more tries in the second half.

They extended their half-time lead just four minutes into the second half with a 95m runaway try to five-eighth Jamie Soward.

It came after Burt fumbled a difficult pass from Eels fullback Jake Mullaney.

The Dragons all but sealed the game in the 52nd minute when veteran centre Matt Cooper scored.

The crowd of 45,863 was the biggest for a regular-season match in Sydney since 1969 and ensured record aggregate crowd figures for the season.

Both Sterlo and Joey were lost for words post game on what Sticky needs to do to turn things around. Joey said that the players will get a flogging (hardest pre-season ever ? ;-)) and Sterlo said that they have lost pride in their defence.

I think that Sticky's biggest problem is the cattle that Kearney left him with. Our team on paper for 2013 is worse than 2012. We'll need more than just an attitude shift to avoid the spoon.

Without pointing fingers at anyone, I'd agree on that point. It changed the mentality of the club to one where you come to 'do business' and then walk away at the end of training.
Hard to put it into words properly, but the difference is that we became a club where professionals were gathered to play football, instead of being a football club which professionally gathered better players.

At least we still have 2 open top 25 spots, and a crapload of cash to throw at them. Things change over summer and sometimes a good player is looking for a new home. We might just be able to bring in a couple of decent players as well as make a change or 3.

The NYC game did show some good signs., the team was bascially 18 year olds from SG Ball playing up 2 years, got back in the game and lost at the death

They have some decent players and with the right encouragement, should have a much better 2013

Spot on, Hindy's book goes into detail how poorly Hagan disciplined the side and how bad habits crept in and some ego's got out our control. It caused friction the senior and younger players that probably still exists till this day. I couldnt believe what I read.

I'm expecting a significant improvement by the middle of next season. There will be a lot of players playing for their careers and Ricky is going to be ruthless.

Also expecting a few guys being shown the door before 30 June next year. It will be a bit like Brian Smith's first year at Newcastle.

I sure hope so.

Ricky Stuart starting the pre season early shows he's not gonna take crap. Cause last nights performance summed up their poor and inept attitude for the last 2 years.

I hope he can work well with these players, train them hard, getting them focused.

Its gonna be a huge loss without Hindmarsh and Burt, and our 2013 squad doesnt look any better unless theyre significant changes to the players attitude, or players coming from other clubs.

Is it true we've only signed Harrison and Lussick from Manly, or are their others expected to come to Parramatta.

Im a bit hopeful with our backline next year with Hayne and Loko coming back and Mullaney who should be in the side somewhere.

I don't think the squad is that bad - yeah we lack some quality back rowers but we also have some decent talent. Stuart has plenty to work with.

I don't think it's quite fair to say Kearney left Stuart with this roster - the retirements of Hindmarsh and Burt, Tahu's implosion and Grothe's retirement (not to mention Cayless') were all out of Kearney's control. He tried to lure players but was unsuccessful (aside from luring then-Origin representative Willie Tonga and an attacking weapon in Sandow). He also got Lussick from Manly.

Whether or not Kearney was right or wrong, our side has been a rabble for some time. We made the Grand Final in 2009, but the side massively over-achieved - there was a sprinkle or two of class throughout the side, but overall, it was an ordinary side being propelled by the greatest purple patch of red-hot form I have seen from an individual.

Our only hope is that Peni Terepo and some other young blokes step up next year. Personally, I think we have a decent forward pack on paper if things go our way:

8. Mannah
9. Keating
10. Lussick
11. Smith
12. Loko
13. Maitua

14. Smith
15. Ryan
16. Terepo
17. Moimoi

A lot of variables there, but potentially, that could be a decent pack. Jacob Loko is destined to end up in the back-row, what with his knees undoubtedly affecting his speed and agility. This is a good thing - he's a monster and a great ball-runner, and running out wide, he could cause all sorts of headaches.

Lussick is big and aggressive - for this reason alone he is better than any prop we used this year.

I think with Moimoi aging, he is better coming off the bench at tired defences. As for Terepo, he's an untested player, but he has potential.

I do not think we can do much next year, but I hope to see the emergence of Terepo and Loko move into the back-row - both moves which will benefit us in the long-term.
