How much are wingers worth these days?

I could be wrong but pretty sure Vatuvei was the highest paid Warrior at one stage. Pretty sure that would be Johnson now since he negotiated a new deal early last year

I used to subscribe to the view that wingers were pretty much the least important and lowest paid players in any football team. They don't do a whole lot of work in attack or defence, and all they really have to do is catch the ball and fall over the tryline.

Then I saw John Williams and Michael Bani playing for my club. And realised the difference between a good winger (say, a Matt Sing) and a rubbish winger (Bani) is enormous, and has a massive impact on your team.

Having said that, having the best winger in the game is pointless if you don't have a decent centre who can draw and pass, or a decent half who can give them quality ball, or a decent forward pack that allows the half room to move.

Uate is worth $450K a year. Especially to the knights.

Agree on the Bani and Williams issue. f**k me we've had some utter muppets play for us. Throw in Hegarty that was paying for us around the same time and is it any wonder we sucked ass so badly during 08-10?????

350k with the old cap for the best winger IMO, and this is for a winger the size of a forward so he can contribute. It's not hard to find a winger from reserve grade to start for close to minimum wage. Wingers don't have much impact on the game. They don't touch the ball too much, they are mainly asked to defuse bombs and finish. Normally the great wingers switch positions, but a winger demanding more than 400k can piss off in my eyes unless he shows he can play another position (Centre, FB) at around the same level. You couldn't even name me the wingers of the last couple of premiership winners and for good reason.

I disagree, I think they have more impact than ever, with the modern kicking & passing games.

In answer to the question, Uate is worth $350 on the old cap & maybe $400 now, absolute max.

The cap is $4.25 million is it?? If there are 10 players on between $300 to $400k, doesn't leave much for the other 15 or so. I'm not saying there is that many on that high a wage @ the Knights but the salary cap does get chewed up pretty quick when players are on over $300k.

The Knights have to hang onto superstars they develop as we will rarely be able to sign them from other teams. It's all well and good to say nah too expensive for a winger and get some cheaper player but who else will we get in the team worth that money?

But Uate isn't a winger. He's a hooker, prop, centre AND winger. He touches the ball as much as guys like Boyd and Gidley and wins us games more than anyone plus brings fans through the gates. You'd be f**king stupid to not pay him 450k

Newcastle, like my club the Wests Tigers, are going to pay overs for a one dimensional player who plays on the wing: Akuila Uate. Add to the fact Uate is a liability on defense at times, this is a ridiculous price tag for a winger. I hated the Tuqiri price tag, I hate this one. Wingers are not worth $400-500k unless of course the have added strings to their bow.

He's also struggles to read the play and is a liability in defence.

Shame no one keeps stats of how many tries players are directly responsible for because I reckon Uate would be right up there.

Uate is an amazing athlete but he's still got a lot of development to go.

400K sounds about right for Uate, especially under the new cap.

Very few specialists wingers anymore, usually they're just players who weren't good enough to be selected in their preferred position. Uate is and offers a lot not only with his ability to score tries but to create momentum through the middle with his hit ups.

Defence is a concern but it isn't an area where I see him as a total lost cause.

There was a stat in a pre-match analysis last year in August that said Newcastle's right edge defence was responsible for 5 tries up to that stage of the season- the best in the NRL at the time.

If a winger is the highest payed player at a club, that club is in trouble.

Bit of sensationalism from the Daily Fishwrap surely? Im willing to be 400K wouldn't be the top salary for any NRL club under the new cap.
