How to grow grass

Hey all,

I've got sections of my yard where we have sprayed and killed plenty of weeds, these sections are surrounded by existing grass, I would like to get grass cover across these sections.

My question is, can I simply throw top soil over these sections and the existing grass will latch on and grow or should I use fertiser and grass seeds to get it going?

Also, we would like to use the yard for a party in about 6 weeks, any chance it would've grown by then?

Thanks in advance...

turf
perfect time of the year to put it down - and it will be ready to walk on in a few weeks at this time of year.
doesn't cost much if you are just doing patches.
just dig up the area you want to cover with a hoe if you have decent soil, lay the turf down, and water it a few times till the roots grow a bit or it might die.
you can tear the turf into the shapes you need, so you don't have to put it down in strips if you don't want to.
Sir Walter is good turf.

Maybe try to find turf which will blend in with the existing grass if you are going to use it.

sowing grass seeds is certainly no easy task.

I went through the exact same process this year with patches in my small lawn after killing a whole mess of weeds. Didn't want to stump up the couple hundred for turf so bought $30 worth of seeds, topsoil etc and used that.

The first batch got dug up by the dog (he was a puppy then and fresh dirt seemed to be a bloody beacon to him), the 2nd lot got washed away by massive storms in the days following planting. The 3rd run is going better now and should all be ok within a few weeks.

Just in time for it to all be ripped out again in 3 months to put in a new deck that the wife has decided she wants...

In short, just go turf. WAAAAY easier than trying to plant seeds and really the cost difference is worth it

Seeds are next to useless for a lawn.

Topsoil & water may do the trick this time of year. A bit of topsoil can do wonders.

get a rake, scratch the area up, sow your seed, firm it down and water. water it daily.

you'll be mowing in no time..

turf for sure and then top-dress and water the lot thrice weekly, if it's that sort - otherwise shake a few seeds out of your dollar bag, stick em in a pot of moist soil and cross your fingers.

I think I'm gonna try the seed and topsoil approach, what's the best process?

1) Rake up the area
2) Add Topsoil
3) Plant seeds + started fertiliser
4) Bit more topsoil
5) Water daily

Does that sounds about right?

leave out item 4 and you're on the ball, although it may not be ready to walk on in 6 weeks, depending on how much sun you get on it

probably no need to water daily

If you're having a party in six weeks then I highly recommend NOT holding a supercross event on it

bang on. not too much fert, it may burn the young plant.

Dont try too hard, grass is just another weed and you can over complicate it. Firming the seed into the soil is also quite important, if you can lay your hands on one of those little lawn rollers it will make it easier. Walking it in, in a small area is ok, it doesnt have to be under the soil, grows best on top. water in the evening... daily

good luck :D

I have successfully combined turf with grass seed by placing alternating strips of turf with seeded topsoil to cover bare patches at a house I was selling a few years ago.

If you have a turf farm anywhere near to you ask them what they do with their offcuts etc.
One nearby to me sells a ute/6x4 trailer load for 20 bucks so long as you are prepared to load them up yourself.

i could sell you some grass, but its going to be pricey, plus where going to have to do the deal under the table, keep the man out of it
