Charm offensive: how Demetriou helped hunt that landed league star
Sebastian Hassett | July 30, 2009

ANDREW DEMETRIOU opened the door for rugby league star Karmichael Hunt to join the AFL.

A friendly chat it may have seemed but when the AFL chief executive recently invited Hunt and his girlfriend Emma Harding to his Toorak home, Demetriou had persuasion on his mind.

Word had already passed around the AFL’s inner sanctum that Hunt was contemplating switching codes, and no sooner had Nathan Buckley given his personal approval after their soon-to-be-famous kick-to-kick session that Demetriou decided to get involved.

Demetriou laid on a rare charm offensive, gently wooing Hunt as he listened to him outline his hunger for a new challenge after six years with the Broncos.

Asked why he wanted to personally get involved, Demetriou was forthright when he fronted reporters at Sydney’s Intercontinental Hotel last night.

‘‘Because it was unique, to be honest,’’ he said. ‘‘We only got involved when he decided he wanted to play for the Gold Coast Football Club and we saw it as an opportunity to help us promote the game. What really impressed me was that his motivation was really about the new challenge and being able to participate as an elite athlete.’’

With Buckley’s endorsement ringing in his ears, Demetriou sat proudly in rugby league’s heartland and declared Hunt was well-equipped to make the transition.

‘‘He’s played the game, and Mark Browning, who’s identified our talent in Queensland and NSW over a number of years, identified his talent very early on and he was one of those fellows who got away, to be honest,’’ Demetriou said.

Hunt has been lured to the Gold Coast not only by a sizeable three-year package but in a role as an ambassador for the AFL and its state arm, AFL Queensland.

But Demetriou insisted there was no problem with the AFL paying players outside the salary cap and denied the suggestion it was effectively inflating the club’s capacity to pay certain players.

‘‘It’s not unusual at all, we’ve got other players who are on promotional deals,’’ Demetriou said, citing Barry Hall.

But the question will not go away, as Demetriou said he wouldn’t rule out using similar tactics in the name of ‘‘promotional activity’’ for western Sydney.

In effect, that could mean the AFL’s 18th club, due to start life in the 2012 competition, may be able to lure an uncontracted big-name player – from another club or another code – with a significant portion of the player’s annual earning sourced from the AFL, not the club.

Despite the promise of transparency, Demetriou refused to reveal how much Hunt would be paid for his extracurricular duties, although it is understood to be a significant amount. Such a move could raise the ire of clubs in traditional AFL markets where such intense promotion is not required.

While Hunt’s character was called into question following allegations of a sexual assault in a Brisbane nightclub last September – he was later cleared by police – Demetriou insisted the AFL had done its own background checks.

‘‘We’re extremely confident [in his character], we’ve spoken to people who know Karmichael Hunt, we’ve spoken to people where Karmichael Hunt went to school, we’ve spoken to people who know Karmichael Hunt and we’ve also spoken to Karmichael Hunt and his girlfriend,’’ Demetriou said.

Surprisingly, Demetriou suggested AFL might not be Hunt’s final destination.

‘‘I guess after AFL he’ll probably take on something else because he’s just got such a desire to succeed in many codes,’’ he said.

Took me a while to get there too.

For years I would watch the odd AFL game on the box, even went to one in the 1980's. Live and let live I thought, they don't really do much harm. But a few years ago I realised what wasn't readily evident back then, not to everyone anyway, those pricks won't be satisfied until AFL is the only Winter sport in Australia. They want Rugby League and Rugby Union to die.

So I sat down and watched one single game of AFL with that thought in mind. I watched it and dissected it from the point of view of a Rugby League fan and it surprised me. Their game has nothing of interest. I hated it from that day on and from then I've just found more reasons to hate it.

I hate it, it's fans and everything it stands for. The lies about its beginnings, the way their stupid fans just accept the AFL handing premierships to teams because they want to drum up support somewhere, the way they manipulate the press, the arrogance of the whole code.

Hate is good and in this case, well-earned.

They are definitely looking at becoming the biggest sport in winter. The thing that sucks for me as a QLDer is we have transplanted Victorians in powerful seats on the God Coast who don't care about League's history. They love wankerball and want a team of thier own ... piss off Ron Clarke!

Smith strikes me as the kind of hack that will jump ship to AFL

he obviously chose to keep highlighting off fie;d incidents and make it out like none ever occur in AFL

is the way he rejected nz. I remember a while back that the papers were rife with the stories of his possibly turning his back on them to play origin. and i thought, what on earth? the guy is a kiwi, but he wants to play origin.

We must stop these guys from playing origin. Origin already has enough players to pick from.

I am also tired of players jumping ship to get a pay day. Obviously, you can't stop them and they must be compelled.

As a possible first step to getting a decent test match sometime soon, how about we pay players (from nrl money, not ARL) to play for NZ.

Don't scoff so soon. Look. We must get over this notion of super fair this and super fair that.
At some stage we must just say that we want to succeed. If the AFL can pay hunt to be an ambassador, then we can pay players if they play for nz.

I know about the NZRL. They suck. This is an NRL matter. A subsidy. Partly the reason the situation exists is because of our origin. We can subsidise kiwi test players. In some way.

Just a starting point. What do people think?

What a crock of sh*t. How about tighten up the ridiculous rules that allow players to play for whatever country they like.

I know. I agree that we should be tightening rules to selection and they won the world cup.

but a couple of things: the world cup as good as it was, was a bit of a joke, even if it was received positively. We did so in the spirit of the tournament. In reality, australia dominated, and destroyed everyone. NZ only won a single competitive game. They got lucky.

And i get its hard to get all the good nz players together at once. I actually think that the whole system needs a restructuring to allow internationals to work better. This measure of paying players more to play for nz would be just one step amongst many. Ofcourse, if it proves too costly, you could review it and remove it if other steps are helping out too.

If I was at the head of a new AFL club, I don't think my first signing would be an NRL player.

Personally I see this as just a media stunt by the club and a money grab by KH, good luck to him.

I remember when the Tigers merged and we were waiting on signings, if they had have signed Ronaldinho, I would have been pretty disappointed.

Do you get my drift?

The thing is this was a rare set of circumstances too good for the GC to pass over. They can't start signing AFL players from other clubs until during 2010 and won't be announced and made public until after the 2010 season.

it's one million over three years, the broncos offered him 1.2 over three years

Yeah, but the Broncos withdrew their offer a few months ago. He couldn't really ask them to offer it to him again.

In the paper he was apparently offered $800K a season to play in Japan.

hunt is an immigrant to australia, he played rugby league here as a kid and went through the grades. he is australian (as well as being eligible for nz, samoa, cook islands) and has every right to choose australia and qld. at least he made his choice and stuck with it. there are people in this country who are eligible for more than one country, and nz have done very well of late from australian born or raised players. nz didnt miss out on him, they never had him.

this topic has been done to death, im more worried about the fact that players such as hunt are leaving our game to play a low sport such as afl. we need to start paying our players what they deserve.

So he took less money to play afl??? wtf is going on in the world?

dont forget that he'll top up his salary if he plays in Japan too.

but overall, perhaps people might believe him when he says he wants a new challenge.

this loyalty crap and cutie leaving for money is extremely hypocritical of rugby league. after all, rugby league itself was born out of players wanting to be compensated. Wally himself was a yawnion player too.

but how about we talk about the more important issues......anyone get a look at cutie's missus? PHWOAR!

Y'know, I really like Wally.

Our King is a bloke who is as passionate about our game as anyone.

AFL's King is Wayne Carey.

Are you telling me that you wouldn't love to shaft your best mates Missus up the sh*tter in your downstairs dunny?

Oh hold on - you'd need a best friend first :p

Wayne Carey. What a class act. :sarcasm:

Well according to El D, Kurt is wrong and its 1million a year not over 3 years + a jap rugby union contract.

lots of figures being thrown about. i read it's $2m over three years this morning. either way, his paypacket is apparently excluded from the clubs salary cap because he will be classified as a rookie list player. he's being recruited under the AFL's international rookie scheme under which it allows clubs to also recruit from other codes. this allows cashed up AFL clubs to make raids on other NRL players should they choose, and not be penalised on the field if the player never reaches potential.

still, quite a gamble on a rookie. the unfortunate thing is that the club will be bankrolled by the AFL, for who $2m or $3m is chump change.

The NRL have a similar system in place whereby RU juniors under a certain age are exempt from the salary cap.
