The rumour on Nova was that he would join Japanese Rugby for a year and then come back to the Gold Coast AFL team, which would complete quite a slide.

AUS/QLD rep for League -----> Nobody in Union -----> AFL on the Gold Coast

where do you go after that?

He's missing money more. AFL need a landmark player. Look at Capp at the Bears/Lions. Look at Locket at sydney Now to get attention they go for hunt + a big name afl player.[/QUOTE said:
The problem with that theory is I guarantee no-one from an AFL state would have ever heard of Karmichael Hunt. So it becomes a novelty factor to try & get some RL fans to see how he goes.

Personally, he doesn't strike me as an AFL type of player and I can't see it working, but, even if he went okay and even if I was cuties greatest ever fan I still wouldn't go to watch him play the dopey game.

Lols aside, the NRL really needs to get itself in a position to offer at least the same money as Australian Union and the AFL. Japanese Union is obviously out of reach, and will probably remain so forever.

lol this is brilliant

One of my most disliked players going to my most disliked sport. Happy days.

Publicity stunt at it's finest, but it will work for the first month. However long term beyond the curiosity factor it's going to do SFA, and unlike Sailor, Rogers, Tuquiri etc, League has an entire 18 months to forget him.

At least this confirms he's Australian. No self respecting Kiwi would take up Aussie Rules.

Seriously WTF is it with that sport? The objective is to kick the ball between the posts but if you miss you're given a consolation point for being incompetent. That's like primary school athletics day where even the most uncoordinated kids at least got a participation ribbon.

How much are they paying him? An untried player in that game, could backfire in a big way for the new franchise.

Speak to our media organisation owners.

They have been so busy raping the game for the benefit of pay tv that they've neglected to realise that the paltry rights agreements which have benefited News for the past few years, have severely hampered the NRL's ability to develop and keep the talent it needs to be succesful. The NRL's playing stocks will continue to be hammered by other competitions around the world and locally because we simply don't sell the game for what it is worth.

At the moment, we have loads of talent in the NRL and heaps of Juniors coming through, but the short term gain for News has allowed other competitions to chip away at our playing stocks on all levels, to the point where if a player has no preference where he plays and it comes down to money, we simply can't compete with anyone. Look at the A-League, even they are paying their marquee players more than we pay ours and that comp has only been around for all of ten minutes. The best AFL players are earning double and sometimes triple what the best NRL players earn and to make matters worse, you can go and play second division rugby in Japan and earn double what you get playing the toughest and most physically demanding sport in the world here.

News Limited and Superleague have a lot to answer for imo and the shenanigans that they have overseen in the past two decades will continue to hinder our sport for many years to come. Especially if we don't get rid of these merkins now.

I can understand from Hunts perspective that he wants to play in genuine national comp..NRL is only the eastern seaboard of Australia and a little bit of NZ.
He has played Tests and Origin, the pinnacle of league, he has won comps, he figures at his age he could be a top line AFL player.

AFL will market him to the league juniors now, they know league juniors can run and catch and tackle, they can teach the to kick a sherrin..with more money than league it means more players heading to AFL rather than league.

AFL have always been more professional than their league counterparts in admin and marketing.

Next thing is their western Sydney franchise targetting young legaue players to supplement their young FAL players..they are being more pro cative than the NRL vegies will ever be!

I'm still not convinced its true. Wasn't he meant to be signed up to Union in Japan after origin?

I guess we will find out by 12pm.

if a player signs with yawnion they should simply be banned for life.

if a player signs with AFL, they should be castrated - or given labiaplasty as the case may be.

I hope he enjoys playing his first game of Aussie Rules in the rain and mud.

It's like watching 3 dozen Steady Eddie impersonators breakdancing in a tub full of KY Jelly.
