I bit off more than I could chew at Eels - Kearney

Yea it was revolutionary to by a half you didn't really rate when todd carney was also available for a bargain price

I reckon SK was ahead of his time. I wonder if they will put a statue of him outside the stadium, or at least get a stand named after him.

No you cant say other coaches has left us in a better stae but Ando did almost win us a comp and Hagan has us too one game before. If it wasnt for a cheating storm they probably both have a title on there resume

From what i was told by a reliable source Roberts was bought out of necessity and came at a price that reflected the view the coaching staff at that time.

I always found it odd considering in all his years of coaching the Kiwi national side, Kearney only once picked Ben Roberts in the side. He preferred to get Thomas Leulai or whatever his name his from the EPL.

I found alot of things Kearney did odd. He sure was a merkin.

Still full of shit I see.

Sandow is one of the best attacking halves in the game. But like any halfback he's not as good behind a weak pack.

I'm not saying it was a mistake in signing him. He was the best halfback available and in form. What I am saying is that it is so heavily backloaded that it could inhibit us moving him on if he is not the future. We could be in a similar dilemma to what is happening with Jennings and Penrith which is the contract is way too large to pass on in full to another club.

Ah, fair enough. That might explain the confusion, and the confusion people have about Pou's contribution to the thread.

Cheers mate, but I don't dislike him at all. I just don't rate him as a head coach, and didn't rate/questioned the decision to dump a coach to hire him. And I respect your views on him that you've outlined below.

I guess I just haven't see any of those comments on here for months, so wasn't sure why it was brought up and into this thread for another run? I'm pretty sure everyone here wishes Kearney well in his future away from head coach at the Eels.

Apart from a couple of recent comments by Sphagnum in either this thread or another, I don't think anyone has used the words you've spoken of or said anything derogatory towards Kearney. I've bagged out Kearney a lot, as had Bartman, IFr33k among others have called him any names like the ones you've mentioned.

I'm not talking about anyone specifically - rather, I am pointing out that it has been said before and that it is unwarranted. Criticism for his coaching is warranted, but attacks on his person are immature and irrelevant.

Regardless, he's no longer a part of this club and we have a new man in charge. Good luck to both - they will each need it.

To be fair, my use of the terms clown, merkin etc are directed more towards the information (like this article) that has come out afterwards which calls his character into question. I don't really know him and wouldn't claim my assessment is gospel but I think I'm entitled to question it when he acknowledges he was out of his depth and knew it for awhile but continued to provide a terrible service to his customers (the fans) without taking remedial action.

I take your point though that comments like this don't add any value to a discussion about the merits of his coaching ability.

I believe I have read posts from you whereby you criticise Kearney, but you provide reasons for it, which is what I encourage.

Most people don't dislike Kearney as a bloke - rather, they dislike him as a coach (fair enough, too). Actually, outside these forum "walls" I have had conversations with people who usually resort to calling Kearney names - it's baffling to me! He failed, sure - but these guys call him an "arsehole" and a "motherf**ker", and for what?

Anyway, all hail the reign of Sticky!

I never said he was a good coach, I questioned in what way he destroyed the team.

Whatever Kearney's role in our on-field results he recruited well, focused on youth, and left our club in good shape. That doesn't make him a good coach but it sure as shit proves he didn't destroy the team.

My assertion is that his tenure destroyed the team`s morale and confidence - and, quite likely, the morale and confidence of individual players. That`s what consistently losing - without any demonstrable plan or strategy to turn things around - will do to a team. That`s what all of us with a great deal of knowledge mean when we say that Kearney destroyed the team.

Don't forget all the games we would have won if Kearney had only known to tell the team to offload.

Makes you wonder why he lets the Kiwi national side pass the ball so much.

I'm not sure how much the kiwi side pass the ball but since their World Cup victory in 2008 with bennett holding his hand Kearney has them something like 1 win 1 draw and 6 losses against Australia - another loss or 2 and he might get sacked from 2 coaching jobs in as many years
