he is part of the problem

Absolutely.

He's the kind of space cadet that might be successful with a strong team that needs more mental work than actual coaching, like the gun team of the late 90s

These blokes need actual coaching and he hasn't got the ability to do that in between transcendental meditation sessions.

I don’t really follow cricket but he comes across as a bit of a deadshit.

No doubt he got the best out of his own career but he doesn’t seem particularly clever or knowledgeable.

Space cadet is definitely the most appropriate term to describe JL.

The other thing I’m not liking (and this might not be a JL directive) is the mentality that if all the players be nice on the field and give friendly interviews on camera they will win the public over. It’s bullshit. The only way they are going to win the public over is by playing good cricket and start winning a few tests.

This. I get not being a dickhead or cheating, but dabbing at balls 2 metres from off stump seems to be the current team mantra

Well honestly there are deep-seated issues in Australian cricket that make winning a few tests more difficult than it's probably ever been before. And there is certainly a sense of distaste over what happened in Cape Town, the things that lead to it and the things the culture review exposed within the setup. So image is controllable and important, for sure.

Besides, it's not like Paine is trying to be a saccharine, faux-nice guy like Brendan McCullum and his NZ side. His sledging has been the best we've had for ages, since COATs like "Choo-Choo" Hayden and "Don't Talk About Candice" Warner basically decided that sledging meant out and out abuse...
