I was unable to attend a trial this year, but I know Grothe only played one of them, so one trial and one actual game.... that doesnt say to me that the pre-season was structured around them being together

yeah, but we dont know how they trained, which, tbh, given how much the starters actually play in trials, is what the pre season is about nowdays

My concern with Grothe is different to most others on here. Everyone wants to bag Eric but seriously, where does the problem lie - with Eric or the coaches??

Grothe has had problems reading correctly in defence for years now but what has been done to fix the problem? Not much it seems. It is the role of the coaches (particularly our defense coach) to evaluate problems players have and to work on overcoming those deficiencies. I'm sorry, but the coach has to cop the wrap for this one.

I can't blame Grothe at all. If the coaches have been working hard on rectifying the problem, and its still occurring, then the problem is pretty serious and he needs to be dropped. I don't think that is the case.

He has so much to offer this team, but he doesn't seem to be getting much help. Having different centre partners all the time wouldn't help either !!

As far as coaching goes ..... I obviously don't know for certain, BUT I would put money on a change in the way Hages tried to get our outside backs to defend during last year which Ben and Eric seemed to struggle with .... at the beginning of the year until a mid-way they were hanging back and bit and they seemed solid in defence - but then they were both rushing out and seemed to struggle to work together .... I don't know why they changed but something changed and I am betting it was a tactic that they didn't adapt to very well

He is heartache material when the opposition are in the Eels 25. Absolutely NO IDEA how to defend against a kick..NONE.
But he is heartache material for the opposition when the Eels are in their 25.

Want do you want..A bloke who can score tries from kicks - or a bloke who can't stop them from kicks?

He's a wing - his job is to score tries. Yes, it would be nice to see him improve his defense. But at the end of the day, he's a try-scoring winger.

wingers also hang around footballers just like drummers hang aroung musicians.

True.

But I would rather have a winger who can actually score tries than one who can save them but is useless in attack.

Defense wins you games, but you can have defensive centres to shoulder that workload. I feel Grothe's abilities as a finisher are fine - just needs a reliable inside man.

For a man of eric grothes size and strength, he should be smashing players when they run at him. They should think twice about running at him. Lately teams are attacking his side, and he is not tackling. I still have no idea what he was doing against the warriors when he just watched vatuvei score the try, could have easily stopped that.

Great defensive read there by Eric Grothe. Keith Lelia scores because of Grothe.

HOW DO YOU PEOPLE THINK HE IS GOOD!
