Do you understand that sport can grow new audiences?

The best RL can hope for in Perth is to be 3rd sport, Depends on Soccer and Basketball may even be lower. Still is a new audience but won't be a city of 2 million people instantly into RL fans

Ok I think we could rank 2nd to afl

union and soccer are marginal sports

Perth nrl team will avg 15k easily

yep, because every citizen of WA won't immediately drop AFL and follow NRL means we shouldn't bother....

It is about getting realistic expectations.

10% of 2m is still a decent fan base, Especially if 1/2 of them become members and regularly attend games

Nor is anyone claiming it will be. We know there is small but dedicated RL fanbase here now and a city of 2.2million and growing to reach out to and engage with. You dont need to convert a big % of that to have a big club by NRL standards. Most NRL clubs would have 40-50k "active" fans, if that.

It goes Eagles >>>>>>Dockers>>>>Wildcats/Scorchers>Force>Glory in the Perth sports club landscape.

If an NRL club can claim a strong third place that is a major win for rugby league.

If RL does not develop a following in new markets then it will become obsolete. I think the NSWRL community who talk down expansion are afraid of their teams being left behind.

It drives me mad that our game refuses to expand into new markets because it's run by people from Sydney who want the RL universe to revolve around Sydney.

Look around here; 90% of ppl want team in Perth or nz2. Ppl just understand establishing a team in a non traditional market is hard & there's every chance with financial support from the NRL or external parties teams won't survive

South Sydney are the leading light for Sydney clubs. Ditched the pokies, concentrated on building their brand, fan engagement and corporate relationships right across sydney and beyond, moved from their small traditional area to a centralised stadium. Now reaping the rewards with strong financial performance.

You must support return of bears too coz South's like them were in the wilderness before coming back as a powerhouse

Rugby is bigger than league in Perth. 3 times as many registered players. Huge ex pat community from African & UK. Big money backer

Looking at TV ratings (best indication of widespread interest) fan base is tiny

They've had a lot of help from rich businessmen and lucky stadium rental deals, but they've definitely made the most of it.

Of all the Sydney clubs, South Sydney have moved beyond their traditional base and it's turned them into the best supported side in NSW. Part of that was forced on them by their fanbase being forced out of Redfern due to gentrification, but it's definitely helped them in the long run. Of all the clubs, I think Roosters and Rabbitohs are best positioned to become the Broncos of Sydney.

Penrith has a small but growing fanbase, but it's well behind the bigger clubs like Parramatta.

Canterbury were a big club who drew a decent crowd when they were going well, but the demographics of their district is changing. The Middle-Eastern community that is growing in the Canterbury-Bankstown region is staunchly anti-gambling and anti-alcohol. This could have a serious impact on the Canterbury Leagues Club over the next 20 to 30 years. The only thing keeping this club alive is gaming machine revenue. Take that away and they're f**ked.

Redfern is not greatly gentrified. Most rabbit fans moved for opposite reasons as suburbs offered better standard of living a long time ago. That's the story of Sydney.
Penrith have a huge fanbase encompassing many from blacktown up to Richmond & through into blue mountains. % of ppl with interest in NRL there is high.
The demo of Canterbury bankstown has changed already - ur late

The thing is south’s are still very strong in the area

south Sydney goes from Redfern over to maroubra Alexendria botany mascot

these areas are fairly expensive and strong south’s territory

when south’s move back home to the sfs their crowds will go close to double their current

they will get quite a few selllouts each year

south’s juniors is more in the middle of their heartland than Redfern oval is

basically as far south until you hit Brighton le sands which becomes dragons

In Adelaide, sure.

Only slightly at the moment, but it will be if we leave Perth to their mercies. Sure as a participation sport its bigger, largely because its easier to play, but if that was the only metric of interest in a professional sports club the West Coast Fever would be filling the Perth Arena every week!

Looking at TV ratings (best indication of widespread interest) fan base is tiny
It really isnt, active fans attending games is, and we dont know what the tv ratings are, only the FTA ratings. Less than 5% of people watch any single NRL game on FTA in Sydney. By your logic that means that 95% of Sydney dont care about rugby league? Its a dumb argument.

I dont think a 20k membership and 15k crowd avg is unrealistic for a well run NRL club in Perth, knowing as I do where RL is at here.

It's nowhere looking at TV & participation numbers. Probably does a lot worse if team is struggling to make finals. 20k members & 15k attendance is overestimation but is that even enough to make team viable?!
I'd be calling twiggy..
