There was a sporting event today in Perth and man it was good

and the Aussie got robbed !
70% of tickets sold Interstate. That’s why the WA govt wants to back an nrl club. Sports tourism is where it’s at. Hopefully they don’t find out nrl fans rarely attend games!

Not for the lower graders, Atleast until a national Reserve Grade comes into play
Pretty sure its in the extra grant allowance the NRL pays clubs who run a second grade side. It certainly will be moving forward, we'll have a national reserve grade by time club 18 is admitted. Same for NRLW.

nrl clubs don’t pay travel.
I see glory negotiated ground lease down to $30k a game for crowds under 10k so a supportive govt may see it much less than $1.2mill. again this is where the govt needs to show how much it really wants an nrl club.

but yeh, the lack of an active fanbase for nrl does make revenue generation much tougher. $17-18mill grant will see every club profitable this year though, according to the nrl ceo.

We had this discussion a few pages back on roughly what it would cost 10 or so guys to go East weekly to get some 2nd tier footy in

See above. It will depend on what happens with reserve grade, currently clubs get around $300k extra on NRL grant for running a reserve grade side. Be it NZ2 or Perth I guess both clubs will face that extra expense if NRL doesn't pick it up. You're looking at around $700 per person per game away. so 25 players and staff x 12 games is around $210k per season travel.

Merge the Suns with Bulldogs and Kangaroos with St Kilda.

That way the Brisbane vs Gold Coast match will be cats vs dogs.

On a serious note, I'm surprised at how little the Perth clubs generate from sponsorship. I thought they would be drawing two or three times as much.

I can only put it down to lack of kit sponsorship AFL allows. Their corporate sales are pretty big so companies support them,I guess there just isn’t much real estate for sponsorship on afl kits.

All AFL clubs have the same amount of kit sponsorship space available, its regulated league wide. Im sure its geographic isolation and chronic underexposure nationally have nothing to do with it. Im sure neither of these things will be relative in the NRL.

Corporate box and hospitality package sales arent so much equal to sponsorship as they are effectively a higher class of attendee, and these are high demand events so they charge through the nose, just like they do the rest of their membership. And in the case of the Perth clubs they havent had to share the revenue with the stadium operator until the move to Optus

GWS, the club apparently no one wants, brought in over $15mill in fan and corporates revenue in 2021. You’d hope an nrl club that is wanted would be able to achieve similar. If not I’m really not sure what it’s says about the position of the nrl!
Now you are sprouting GWS bullshit? Gil’s biggest fanboy really is a sucker for AFl lies.

Boxes are bought by and large by companies, not individuals as you well know. 2021 Eagles had $13.7million revenue in sponsors and signage and a further $10.9mill in corporate sales, oh and the largest football club generated revenue in the competition. Yeh isolation is a real problem for them lol.

On the evidence to hand sponsorship revenue is an actual issue for a club West Coasts size - not least the part I bolded and you deliberately ignored about kit regulations being the same across the league. You being willfully ignorant on this because the data doesnt support you doesnt help your cause or the cause of the club you apparently want.

The signage goes with the stadium deal at Optus as does the f**king corporate sales. Neither of which will be available at HBF Stadium.

Corporate box culture - and the amount you can charge for those - goes hand in hand with attendance and demand, not sponsorship. West Coast games are a highly in demand event every second week.

West Coast has much more demand than even Fremantle at the same venue, and an NRL club isnt going to get close to that - even if they had access to the Optus Stadium facilities - which they wont because HBF Stadium wont come close even after its world cup upgrades.

Generating $8-10m from football operations shouldn't be beyond a Perth-based club's ability.

If they pull 12k crowds and have 15k members then they should generate at least $4m from ticketing and membership. Sponsorship and corporate hospitality should not drop below $3m. Merchandise would bring in at least $1m.

With the annual grant being so high, now is the perfect time for a Perth club to enter the league and establish a following.

An event game or two, such as Melbourne vs Perth on ANZAC Day or Easter Sunday, would be a money spinner.

Wow pretty definitive

hbf park probably isn’t fit to host an nrl side then
It’s a joy watching the whinging Pom constantly getting owned. He considers himself a bloody expert on everything when, in fact, he’s just a piss head with a massive chip on his shoulders.

Imagine making 50,000 posts which all are fairly similar being negative about the nrl. Why follow a competition so avidly which you don’t like ?

I was talking in comparison to NRL clubs originally, but yes their sponsorship is surprisingly low compared to other AFL clubs and given the size of the club in other areas.

What wait, there'll be no signage sales or corporate sales for an nrl club at hbf park? Why? Will they keep all the boxes closed on game day? Will the electronic signage around the ground be switched off? That makes no sense. Theres no need to swear lol.
Corporate culture goes with companies wanting to wine and dine or tax load marketing sales expenditure. But yeh they wont want to do that at nrl games, only afl??

It doesnt need to match it, it literally needs to only get to around 20-30% of it!

souths generated $9.8mill from a fanbase of 14k crowd avg and 30k members.

A 15k crowd avg and 20k members will generate more than $5mill. Corporate and sponsorship will be around $6-8mill at least. $30mill plus is a realistic target for revenue with the NRL grant. If Perth cant generate that then NZ2 certainly wont so the NRL might as well just go back to pokie funded clubs only for club18 and stay an East coast comp.
