In Memoriam

Tony Bennett, singer extraordinaire, has passed away due to natural causes. He was 96. He was diagnosed with Alzheimer's some years earlier.

Not my cup of tea but he had some unconventional collaborations with other other artists later in life such as Lady Gaga.

RIP Mr Bennedetto. ☹️

The earliest memories of Tony Bennet was my parents had the album from him called I Left My Heart In San Francisco, that album and also Ferrante and Teicher's Concert For Lovers, i was fascinated by the album covers art work, Ferrante and Teichers had the Hollywood Bowl and Bennetts album had the Golden Gate Bridge, as a 3 and 4 year old these images fascinating and have always stuck in my mind, that is my earliest memory of Tony Bennett.

While not a huge fan of his earlier work i did love his collaborations with K D Lang and Amy Winehouse especially.

I work in aged care, and even our residents feel his music is a bit slow-paced for their liking. It's not to everybody's taste, but he is a legend and iconic.

I think it’s safe to assume she took the same route. She was devastated by his death. Very sad indeed.
The radio report I heard this morning just said that she died, which was immediately followed by a 'If you or someone you know needs help, call Lifeline on ...' message. You ONLY ever hear that message on the news if it's about someone who took their own life ... whether they announce that or not.

Sinead was incredibly ahead of her time when you think back. She tore up that photo of the pope during a TV interview as a protest of the culture of child abuse within the church and got widely condemned and called crazy for it, but as it turned out she was 10% on the right side of history.

I remember when she being compared to Mariah Carey.

Mariah Carey and Sinead O'Connor are two very different artists. Both with their own qualities.

Mariah Carey is a phenomenal singer FWIW
It’s a matter of taste I guess but Carey is the singing version of Yngwie Malmsteen IMO, technically brilliant but tasteless. Just cause you can fit a million notes into a line doesn’t mean you should.

Yeah very sad news to hear.

If you want a redally great read, check out his book My Sporting Life. I found it a really good read as he mentions a lot of anecdotes about sport he loves (e.g. cricket, football) that either he saw growing up or covered/encountered as a sports journalist. Interestingly, when he Parky played County Cricket, he kept Geoff Boycott out of the Yorkshire First XI.
