Not sold on Griffin.

Fitzy would be a solid option but he has stated his intentions.

Time will tell if his position changes with the McGregor sacking...

Mate, of the locals Griffin would be my choice for 2 years.

What we lack is discipline. We need to steady the ship and NOT go with an unproven now. Fitzy/Ryles may well be great future coaches, and if we had just finished a tenure with a successful coach then maybe a pathway would be there under some guidance.

Ten years of failure needs to be halted. Not a time for up and comers right now. The uproar would we massive if we employed anyone without first grade experience and some semblance of success.

If he wants to come here, then get it done but more than likely , if Young wins a few games as assistant coach DON"T be surprised what this board will do .......
I'm thinking deep down that Dean Young will land the "plumb" job to coach the Dragons. It will be in keeping with the past 8 years. If not there are not many other choices that do not already have commitments. I'm not keen on Griffin, Green, Toovey. Other guys -
Wane - wants to coach England to win against Australia
Bennett - contracted to Souths until the end of 2021 and isn't the same as he was for us during 2009-2011
Fitzgibbon - His heart is with the Roosters
Ryles - Has indicated will be assisting Eddie Jones in Union.

It will be Young, Flanagan and Shepherd for next year in my opinion.

Agreed.

That's why Wane makes such sense...

Being England coach won't stop Wane from taking an NRL head coaching role...

Now that change is occurring, the Board will not want to be seen to preside over another disastrous appointment. I would expect that they will recruit an experienced head coach who has achieved success at a first class level.

Of the candidates available, Bennett, Wane and possibly Paul Green would come into consideration. If the League was to lessen Flanagan’s penalty then he may be another.

I would be happy with either Bennett or Wane as both have come into clubs and had an immediate impact.

Wane would have obvious advantages:

1. Outsider with no baggage
2. Proven track record in the ESL
3. Current England coach - would know the rundown of the best players
4. Hard taskmaster and uncompromising on those who dont pull their weight
5. Great man manager
6. Develops juniors
7. Would bring fresh and new thinking to the club
8. Results driven

Have to weigh these up against those in the running. I doubt any would be able to match or better these 8 points above.

Mcgregor being punted may also help the chances of landing him...
It will majorly but if he’s not available he’s not available. He’s my top pick though followed by Fitzy, then Bennett. The next tier down I guess is your Griffins etc but I’d prefer one of the above.

Reported that Fitzgibbon can’t formally apply for the job. Must breach his contract with the chooks.

He has to be headhunted.

Storm’s Jason Ryles out of contention for Dragons coaching gig

The Continuous Call Team’s Mark ‘Piggy’ Riddell has weighed in on the future of the St George-Illawarra Dragons following Paul McGregor’s departure.

Piggy, a former Dragons star and friend of McGregor, told Mark Levy interim coach Dean Young is unlikely to be offered a permanent job, with the board likely to seek “someone that’s got a bit more experience”.

Mark floated Piggy’s “other great mate” Storm assistant coach Jason Ryles as a potential contender, but while Piggy admitted the two have spoken about the idea, Ryles is keen to stick with his move to England.

“His words to me were ‘no, I’ve got a contract with English rugby union and Eddie Jones, and I’m going to go over there and give it a crack’.

“The Dragons need a lot of work, and … I don’t think putting a new coach in there’s just going to fix everything.

“Frankly, I don’t think Rylsie thinks it’s the right fit for him at this point in time.”

Cronulla Sharks legend Paul Gallen has put forward his nomination for the next head coach of the St George-Illawarra Dragons following Paul McGregor’s departure.

Rehiring Wayne Bennett, Gal told Mark Levy, would be “the ideal scenario” for the club.

“I think a lot needs to change at the Dragons to be honest with you.

“He knows what he’s doing, … he just gets things done.

“The other thing is Wayne Bennett doesn’t come cheap, and I don’t think the Dragons are real flushed with cash at the moment.”

Smart move Jason.

Move on, develop as a coach and maybe one day. Not now.

Excellent. field narrows down.

  • NRL: Premiership-winning Dragons prop Mick Weyman on why Wayne Bennett should return to the Red V
The St George Illawarra coaching position is vacant post this season following Paul McGregor’s departure, and former prop Mick Weyman says there is only one man for the job.

Premiership-winning St George Illawarra prop Michael Weyman has declared Wayne Bennett is the coach to lead the Dragons back to the top following Paul McGregor’s looming departure.

Weyman won the 2010 title at the Dragons alongside Bennett, but his connection with the super coach runs much deeper.

The affable prop credits Bennett for resurrecting his career following a series of injuries and helping him through his father’s death in November last year.

It’s why Weyman believes the master mentor is the perfect man manager to ensure the famous Red V club regains its respected mantle.

Bennett is contracted at South Sydney until the end of the 2021 season, but he has been linked to the Dragons as a coach or coaching director.

After seeing the seven-time premiership mentor sprinkle his successful dust on the Dragons in 2010, Weyman has no doubts that he can do it again.

“Wayne is just one of those guys who can get everyone believing in themselves,” said Weyman, who played 94 games for the Dragons between 2009 and 2013.

“The trust from your coach and players is what builds culture.

“The trust between Wayne and I continues today with the strong bond that we have.

“He is so good for the younger guys but also the older guys as well. He just develops a relationship with his players that will stay forever.

“I don’t have much to do with the Dragons anymore, but I love watching them play, and they are still a close part of my heart.

“They are up and down a bit, but that is footy, and I think culture is built from within and comes through hard work and players committing.”

Weyman still regularly talks to Bennett, revealing the veteran coach played a vital role in helping him after his father, Ack, died last year.

“When dad passed away Wayne was in close contact with me,” he said.

“I went through a tough time, but Wayne is always there, and he is only a phone call away.

“I also stayed at Wayne’s farm not long ago.

“He will always be one of those guys that I hold high in my football career because he helped me achieve and get to where I wanted to go.”

Weyman never has to search far for a reminder of his 2010 premiership success at the Dragons.

Proudly donned on the wall of his local pub in Moruya – the Adelaide Hotel – is a picture of his late father and himself holding the NRL trophy.

“Just to be able to sit there, have a beer, and look at that picture is the best,” he said.

“The amount of people that also stop and look who are Dragons fans, they just love that jumper.

“It is such a proud thing to be a part of the Red V, which is why there is so much scrutiny there when it comes to results.”

These days, Weyman is busy juggling time on his property in Moruya on the NSW south coast with coaching the local under 7s side.

He is also dedicating a lot of time to honouring his father, who is a local rugby league legend.

The field in Moruya is named the Ack Weyman Oval following his years of service to the game in the region.

Ack was offered the role of gear steward at Canberra and served at the club from 2000-2009.

He was also active in surf lifesaving and played a key role in the success of the Moruya Surf Life Saving Club in the annual George Bass Surf Boat Marathon.

The Moruya community is looking to build a statue of Ack much like the one of Mick Weyman that is currently erected.

In a bid to make this a reality, the community is calling on donations.

The article that quoted him saying he wouldn't be available until after coaching England to beat Australia was from May 9th.

A lot has changed since then...

As Much as we Believe the best for the Dragons is Wane or Flanno, Dean Young will be our next long term coach, God Help us!
