I agree with the idea of an Indigenous vs Maori game, it would become a celebration of indigenous culture in both countries and would be a more competitive and enjoyable game.

As long as they allowed this before every game aswell.

I enjoyed the game more than i expected, honestly. but it does seem to be getting a bit stale...

If it must stay as a standalone game, i favour the Indigenous Vs Polynesian game.
-Even among non-indigenous Aussies, it seems there is more love and emotion behind this Indigenous team that there is for the Roos. Thats not even considering the passion of the indigenous fans, many of which arent even RL fans.
- The Polynesian team (basically NZ national team + any great Islander player) would be a celebration of Australias working class immigrant history while still keeping clear of the "White Australia" historical skidmark. (obviously the vast majority of these players are based in Australia, either being immigrants or children of immigrants)

As for the location, as long as it stays out of Sydney (we get enough games) it should be moved all over Australia. Even Melbourne and Perth would work with their NZer populations and the good PR it would give RL in these areas would be amazing for the game.

If this "Indigenous Australian vs United Oceanic" game did happen (which it REALLY should!!!), the teams cant dick around with the jersey designs like the Allstars teams have been. They need to pick designs, stick with them long term and make those images iconic for RL...

Ive always thought the Indigenous team should have a stylised version of the National jersey, to bring together the Green and Gold Chevrons and this Red/Gold/Black Flag. I worried that would be too ambitious, but this new training jersey has done it perfectly!!

As for the Oceanic team (obviously more difficult considering it has to bring together half a dozen nations), and Olympic rings-style "all teams are represented by at least one colour" thing could work. The logo for the Pacific Cup could be the basis, but i have no idea beyond that....

an oceanic team is just as dumb as the NRL All stars team. Fijians and PNGers are Melanesian and are physically and culturally different to Samoans, Tongans and Maori from NZ and Cook Islands.

Wendell Sailor unhappy about the Indigenous under 16's game getting bumped.

"IT’S the interstate match that has produced some of the NRL’s finest indigenous players, like Greg Inglis and Ryan James.

The NSW versus Queensland Indigenous under 16s fixture has traditionally been played as the lead-up game to the NRL All Stars.

But this won’t happen next month due to a contractual agreement with Hunter Stadium that stipulates only one lead-up match can be played prior to the All Stars on February 10.

The NRL has opted to play the women’s All Stars game as the curtain-raiser, bumping the 16s match to Thursday night at Newcastle’s No. 2 Sportsground.

This has annoyed the indigenous community, who believe the 16s deserve to play on the main stage.

Former international Wendell Sailor, who played for the Indigenous team in the first All Stars game in 2010, questioned the NRL’s decision.

“You want these kids playing before their heroes, so I’m very disappointed that won’t be the case this year,” Sailor told The Sunday Telegraph.

“I love the fact the women get to play on that main stage, but these 16s are the future.

“All the NRL players get to the game early and watch the kids play and that inspires them to play well and impress.

“This 16s game is a big reason why we have the All Stars game.

“I remember back in 1993 when I played Queensland 19s and we got to play before the main Origin.

“You are seeing guys like Mal Meninga and Allan Langer and you are in the same dressing room — it was unbelievable.

“It’s why I think the playing the 16s match the day before the All Stars doesn’t have the same impact. They should play before the main match.

“I think the NRL should have thought about that more about that process.”

The NSW and Queensland under 16s will still have their jerseys presented to them by the indigenous All Stars players prior to their game.

The 16s match will also be a lead-up game to the popular Redfern All Blacks versus Cherbourg Hornets contest, which always attracts a strong crowd.

Sailor respects this, but says the 16s deserve to play on the main game day.

As a proud indigenous man who has played an integral role in the All Stars concept as a player and mentor, he understands the significance of involving the next generation stars.

“This is not just about football, it’s also about education,” he said.

“I remember when Johnathan Thurston was sitting down next to one of the 16s players who had left school to work on a station.

“JT told him the best thing he could do was finish school first, so after the tournament the young boy enrolled to go back to school the next year.

“That’s one of many stories of the impact of this 16s game.”

Former Newcastle and Penrith winger Ashley Gordon said there are “so many reasons why the 16s is so important”.

“And now it is not treated with the same importance,” Gordon said. “This 16s game provides so much benefit, like playing on the biggest stage, being spotted by scouts. This game is worthy of a bigger stage.”

If we need a "celebration of culture" game. Why not extent to to Aboriginal, Maori, Polynesia & Melanesia in a roating double header?

It is a bit of a shame that the under 16s game will not be on game day. But number 2 is an excellent venue right in the heart of the city and if the all stars and the indigenous players are there (maybe have an open training session before hand) then it will still be an okay crowd and a good night for the youngsters.

Fair enough, but we would need to ad in a 3rd and even 4th team to the concept then. PNG is too passionate about RL to be excluded and Fiji is too important a location...

i personally doubt that a United Oceanic team would be rejected because of migration patterns 400 years ago. Im more interested in including as many proud RL nations as possible than i am in racial purity.

Just a aside

As the population interbreeds we are now 10 generations since first settlement does anyone ever stop being indigenous?

Eg after 3 generations RL players lose their heritage nation status

I have a Celtic background from great grandparents heritage but in no way feel connected to the Celtic culture. I find it interesting that people who are 3 or 4 generations away still do. The Americans I find love this, had an Irish immigrant in the blood from two hundred years ago and you'd think they were born and bred county cork. Maybe its a new world thing?

Why the f**k would someone with indigenous heritage stop being indigenous. .. they are still in the country where their ancestors have been for 50000 plus years or about 2000 generations...why the f**k would 10 generations have any bearing on your heritage and culture[/QUOTE]

Honestly, this is a bit ignorant

A person can still be connected to the culture of their ancestors, regardless of how many generations there have been since. Such things are past down from parent to child

Simply because you didnt experience such things doesnt mean others dont

I have no issue with the general situation you mention other than we could all play for the Kenyan indigenous team by your definition

But wondering if the NRL had any rules that define who can and can't play in the indigenous team. How is team selection availability arbitrated ?

Aboriginality is generally accepted when someone genuinely identifies themselves as aboriginal. It's a bit more fluid than nationality.
