To be fair, a stress fracture in your spine is very hard to pick up and is quite often thought to be a sprain/strain of a ligament or muscle and would be uncommon in rugby (most common in hurdlers, javelin throwers, fast bowlers, etc). It usually won't be picked up on x-rays by even the most seasoned radiologists. It more often than not requires a bone scan to confirm even if you have a musculoskeletal specialist or a Peter Stanton/Victor Popov calibre of physio on our staff (which we don't as far as I am aware). It will partially heal then re-fracture and can be months for recovery. Moylan seems to have got off lightly with 4 weeks.
2 times last year we rushed Mansour back only for him to re-injure himself.
Then Soward in Round 2 back injury they tried to manage all year rather then have the op in the off season.
Seg had the elbow issue tried to push through the year. DWZ has the collapsed lung in 2014 no Op only to happen again.
We could of handled all or these different and been a chance of semis last year. great to see we didn't start any different
I agree back injuries can be hard to spot with some testing. But if Moylan has soreness in his back from the Bulldogs trial that he hasn't had before or they diagnose it a minor sprain. Wouldn't the smart thing to do, even if the test show nothing, to rest him as a precaution? especially with a meaningless trial the following week.
He is coming off a long lay off with injury and and has not had a full pre season of training, so he not at the top of his fitness. Wouldn't that send alarms bells to the coach or medical staff at the club to tread lightly with him if he picks up any niggles and to rest him?
So is this getting put down to bad luck... again?
not by me. There was no need to play him for 80 mins in a trial with any sort of injury.

As other have said though, caution should have been used considering he is our best player and the long lay off he had.
