he's the best in the game now and has been for years, but not the best ever. in fact id be interested to see who these 'most people' who would say yes are. i think they'd be in the minority

Ian Walsh, Ben Elias, and Steve Walters are 3 off the top of my head who most would rate better than Smith. Possibly Max Krillich as well.

How could you forget Noel Kelly Jason?

Smith would barely make the top 10 all time hookers. He's been very average since 2007.

I don't think he has been average at all Pete. His all around game is still very high quality. It's just that he doesn't need to get into 5/8th as much anymore for Melbourne that made him look spectacular.

His defence is still top notch as is his dummy half running and service. Although he doesn't kick as much as he used to either, he usually gets it right.

He'de be in a select group along with Sandy Pearce, Kevin Schubert, Ken Kearney, Noel Kelly, Ian Walsh, Elwyn Walters and Steve Walters - but he wouldn't be near the top of that tree.

In terms of workrate...i'd prob say yes. Ben Elias kills him in terms of skill and an attacking threat.

put cameron smith in an average team and he would be known as a good first grader.

if he was say penriths hooker for the past 5 years do you honestly think he would be the first choice Australian hooker?

He's the best at throwing a dozen forward passes a game and getting away with it, yeah.

hooker role has changed alot since those days, modern day hookers are now halves who can tackle and cam is certainly a fine example

Very-average? George Ndaira is very-average.

Smith had been below-par for 1.5 years till the last month and a half. He's only 26, 4 more years and he'll probably be considered the GOAT.

That is such a stupid argument.

In a team of great players on the Storm he more often the not looks the best, and when he gets to rep levels he does what great 9's do and lets the halves run the show.

Anyway he's not going to get his proper recognition in this place.

I should've wrote solid instead of average, my mistake.

1.5 years? I can't remember his start to 08 being great either...

I hope he does Noa, I like him as a player.

Well Pete, he wasnt bad for all of this year or all of last, so take a couple of months of 2 years.

I do agree he's been coasting though for a while.
