Is Channel 9 the home of rugby league?

Channel 9 is a tired old network and their league coverage has gone downhill over the last 10 years, and gaining speed.

They should have a good hard look themselves before pointing fingers at others... eg Karl Stefanovic on $2m plus a year....

They’ve lost viewership hand over fist in the last few years, in part due to expansion of entertainment avenues such as Netflix yet they’ve remained unimaginative and insular to maintain their once leading media business.

And as for league coverage... whose really wasted money in hiring the recent Queensland boys club in commentary.. great players but listening to them is like getting flogged with a wet newspaper. Maybe we’ll make JT do his laugh again... FFS.. The only positive thing I’ve seen them do is bring back Paul Vautin to the commentary box, the bloke is really insightful and genuinely funny. Oh - and finally reading the tea leaves and binning the most unlikeable commentator in history - Ray Hadley.

Nine is biting the hand that feeds it in the blame game to try and deflect the fact they have made an absolute pigs ear of their network.

I guess we still have to be civil.

But as this bloke says,

“Nine considers the game a “loss leader” — something that is great for its brand and news division despite the heavy costs involved with broadcasting matches.” I’ll tell you what isn’t good for your brand: welcoming a cancelled NRL season to save money.

Didn't they require a large cash injection a few years back?

They let the Cricket go, if they let the league go they will be in a worse position then C10 are currently in.

It rings a bell mate but I can’t be certain.

Yes to let the cricket go was unbelievable. Was a channel 9 flagship. Some competition from Fox had shown them up a lot here. But at least with the cricket they were genuinely trying new things each season and innovate.

They’ve got competition from Fox for league too. But apart from the Monday night league show, they’ve done very little to raise their game.

They are a shadow if their former selves. Yesterday’s hero.

Channel 9 are following tired playbook of failed businesses - do nothing new, don't innovate anything, flog old things to death, and do it on the cheap. You want "eyeballs on screens" you need to do something different. The fall in their viewership is because their coverage is sub-par (to put it politely). Only for Origin, as it is only on free to air TV, have I watched a league game on Nine in probably the last 5 years or more.

I'd rather have a red hot poker shoved up my backside than watch their trash coverage.

A home is where you love spending your time, you feel at ease ,as a family, you are entertained, you usually enjoy each other's company and you want to never grow old.

Then you have ch9 which is home to tired old football commentators, bandana wearing nimrods, couldn't promote or entertain a local country fair, pays millions to celebs who look like they were former street buskers and just as effective ,and have an inbuilt habit of providing more promotion to a code for which they have no contractual deals, than to the code they do.

ch9 "the home of rugby league", more like a transit motel on the M1.

Could you image a world without Phil Gould and Peter Fitzsimmons talking about rugby league?
There is a difference. One loves rugby league, in fact it is his life, the other regards it as a threat to the sport he loves even though that battle appears to have already been lost. Both of them are beholden to the same master. I'll be interested to hear what, if anything, Gould has to say about his boss's tirade this week when he writes his column and/or records his podcast. He's probably severely constrained in what he can say, if he wants to remain on the payroll.

Nine clearly wants to low ball the nrl this year to save face with the market and pressure nrl into signing an extension now for 2023 - so as not to get into a competitive scenario with ten. Opportunistic pieces of sht. They need to take a good hard look at what happened to Ten when they lost winter sport.

I havent watched a game on 9 since the NRL renewed the contract in 2012. Not jumping to 10 was a HUGE mistake...

Forget the difference in money. 9 is actively trashing the brand and trying to make it worth less. At least 10 would promote the NRL.

Considering how fast the media landscape has changed in the last couple of years I hope that the NRL tell 9 to jam any contract extension nonsense. The way 9 is going they may not have the ability to pay for any years beyond 2022. Same for Fox as they also may not be around in 2 years from now

In my opinion the NRL need to look at streaming games on a pay per view model inserting their own ads during the halftime break etc and allow 2-3 games a week on another FTA broadcaster. Imagine how good the game could be promoted without the negative commentary and stale game productions that we get from 9.

If the digital arm of the NRL can't set this up in 2 years they could run with a year on year contract with Kayo and another FTA channel till they have it sorted.

An games under anti siphoning laws such as the GF and Origin could be sold on a game by game deal to competing networks. Remember the great coverage 7 gave in the last RLWC.

Global company pitches NRL plan to save tens of millions on broadcasts
Adrian Proszenko
April 11, 2020 — 4.30pm

The NRL has been approached about forming a venture to produce its broadcast content in-house in a move that could slash tens of millions of dollars in annual costs.

The Sun-Herald can reveal a third party with extensive global sports production experience has pitched a proposal to powerbrokers at Rugby League Central that could revolutionise the way rugby league telecasts are produced. The parties met to discuss the idea for the next broadcast deal, which could allow for an increased number of rights holders when the existing contract expires at the end of the 2022 season.

Rugby League Central spends almost $500,000 a day to run the competition just as the coronavirus outbreak has resulted in a massive downturn in revenue.

Those behind the pitch believe the quality of the product will be every bit as good as current telecasts. The initiative would also give the NRL creative and editorial control and could open the door for other sports to use the services. It also opens up the prospect of rugby league being on-sold to a mix of traditional broadcasters, including free-to-air and pay TV, as well as Netflix, Google, Optus and Amazon. Those platforms could also potentially be involved in simulcast arrangements with traditional partners.

The NRL has already committed $150 million towards its digital strategy, including a huge investment into nrl.com. That gives the game the option of providing more of its own exclusive content directly to subscribers or on-selling games to a variety of providers.

The Herald revealed in October that bringing production in-house was an option for the NRL. The model has been used overseas and locally, most notably by Supercars and tennis. A host of propositions – from ending simulcast arrangements, selling off State of Origin separately, and playing matches in quarters to increase advertising slots – have been workshopped with a view towards the next deal.

However, all of those options could immediately come into play should Nine and Fox seek a return to the table to renegotiate the current arrangement.

Another option for future broadcast cycles is the prospect of one partner filming all of the games and then on-selling some of the content to other parties.
