 I'm as staunch a Victorian as you can get. If that makes me less of a person, so be it, but you lot should be greatful that I'm one of the few Victorians that has embraced the code and tries to spread the word.

Don't flatter yourself.

You're still an AFL fan.

Nobody - I'm just saying your attitudes are identical. AFL haters in Sydney and NRL haters in Melbourne have pretty much the same rationale, which is why neither sport is making a big imprint in their respective states.

Actually, that's a common misconception, from people south of the Bargearse line anyway.

Most people north of the line have actually given AFL a go, they've watched it, some have even gone to a game so they are in a position to give an opinion on AFL based on something other than inbred bias. Most AFL fans who hate either Rugby code can't say the same.

My dislike of AFL and AFL fans wasn't automatic.

I'm well aware of this - I'm not trying to spread the gospel for AFL here.

No point.

We've had a hundred AFL fans here trying to convert people and at last count they've converted no one. In fact, they've driven people away from AFL.

I know it isn't followed by many in Sydney - but when you ask how can people follow both codes, accept that there are those who have grown up on a diet of AFL but over time, have learnt to like and indeed, embrace, rival codes. Because we embrace a rival code does not mean we can no longer enjoy the sport we initially followed.

Once a Victorian eh?

Again, you're preaching to the wrong choir. I accept that AFL will never be the major sporting code outside of Vic-SA-WA. I also accept the reasons why Sydneysiders (and indeed, the rest of the world) think the sport is shit. It doesn't mean though that I have to stop following the sport I grew up loving. The sports we choose are very much ingrained into our psyche dependent on where we grow up... eg: people in Vic follow AFL, NSW RL, England EPL and the USA NFL. Which goes to show, if we were all brought up in different places, we'd probably have completely different sporting passions. In any case, I'm proud to support both and will do so till the day I die. :D

You do that.

I'll tell you the problem here.

You could have said "I follow AFL and Rugby League" but you didn't did you?

I support League and our shithouse cricket team.

I am indifferent/mildly interested in soccer, with the caveat that i dislike the "football elitists" who crap on about how great it is and try to correct me when i refer to it as soccer.

I actively try to undermine other codes. To my shame i've been to one Onion game this year, but only because i got free tickets and i wanted to check out the redeveloped Eden Park.

We left at halftime. And smeared poo all over the bathrooms.

I dont mind NFL either but its just far to much of an undertaking to watch a game, im lucky if i cant watch a quatre before i loose interest. NBA is the same but atleast it flows a bit more.

League massive first and Union 2nd (loved watching the Reds the past 2 years) and like highlights of the NFL.
Like Football codes which have a try/touchdown as it's seems quite natural to me but if Iam visiting a certain place or country then I want to try the local food and drink and that means the local Sport so yes I would go and watch an Aussie Rules match in Melbourne or a Gaelic Football or Hurling game at Croke Park even through I don't like them I think it's good to broaden your outlook as there is nothing worse then i.e. watching brits on the piss in Spain eating Roast dinners, drinking Brown Ale and watching EPL.

There's Gold in them thar hills !!

Definitely sigworthy that

Not really. By that reasoning soccer is the greatest game ever invented and the EPL is the epitomy of all sporting achievement. Being popular does not mean it's good unless you believe in the wisdom of the masses.

With all the code wars in Australia, does this happen in other countries? I guess in England, soccer is so far ahead of union or league that there is no point in having a war. But what about in the USA? Do fans of the NFL, NHL, NBL, MBA detest the other sports or do they all have their niches and are accepted as valid parts of the sporting landscape?

Who decides whether a sport is good or not? its a matter of opinion. The only way i can see of ranking sports against each other is by their popularity, and even that doesnt really work.

Love rugby league, would watch more rugby union if it was on FTA, can handle 5 minutes of AFL at a time but only if the swans are playing (and winning). Absolutely despise soccer. I've been known to watch the odd bit of lawn bowls or snooker but would never contemplate watching any soccer.

Other sports I take an interest in are field hockey (would watch more if it was on FTA) and cricket, again, only watch the internationals in Australia because they are shown on FTA but would watch domestic cricket if I had access to it. I don't mind watching a bit of baseball occasionally (I played tee-ball and baseball for about 8 years as a kid) but won't watch NFL or basketball of any variety.

Not a fan of yawnion, but may watch highlights of the wannabees.

A League is a joke, AFL is the cesspit of Australian sport. The only sports I actually take an interest in is NRL then cricket (mainly because it's the off season)

Rugby League in all its forms and levels (NRL, NSW/Qld Cup, local comps, pub comps)...

....Daylight....

.......Union (the Int'l game is so relyant on kicks it has become dull but its still 1000x better than both AFL and Soccer)

NFL, NBA and even MLB.

Having payTV with access to ESPN, a few recent trips to the US and an NBA mad wife has opened my eyes to american sport in recent years.

Cant stand watching AFL or Soccer. I have tried but neither sport appeals to me in any way

NRL (roosters)
Cricket (mainly just australian summer, tests and odi's, some high profile international tests involving other countries as well)
NBA (rockets)
NFL (Colts)
MMA/Boxing

i follow the above religiously

major events like the tour de france
golf majors
soccer world cup
champions league
Olympics (Usain Bolt probably the best prefomanace ive ever seen by a sportsman)

i will also watch very closley

will be tuning into the latter stages rugby world cup despite almost falling asleep whist attending the reds final. the only thing keeping me awake was the tosser with his sweater over his shoulders next to me jizzing every time quade kicked it.

EPL and most major euro soccer leagues im my opinion are a complete waste of time. no parity no competition. and as for someone else mentioning the subplots i would rather watch paint dry then watch a team who has won 4 games all year fight to stay in the league or a lower leauge team try to beat a 3rd string top league team in a cup game.

and Finally AFL......... used to watch the grand final and follow the swans but havent even done that over the last 5 years. absolute abortion of a sport founded by an absolute abortion of a state.

as i say theres only one thing wrong with victoria..... its full of f**king victorians....

the AFLs fans and administrations attitude to our sport has everything to do with how much i now hate it.

Union as it is an Unholy Crushing Vortex Of Boredom!!

Very curious to know why you go for the teams you do.

Especially in the minor comps you've mentioned where I imagine it would be difficult to catch a game

Thanks to the wonders of the internet it's possible to follow any sport in any country on the planet.

There's probably a site somewhere illegally streaming the 2011 Russian Vodka drinking world cup...
