Is it time we get player names on the back of shirts?

I reckon each week they should do fan polls to choose the number a player plays in.

I also reckon it's time to embrace commercialism to the nth degree.

Steggles Roosters.
Vodafone Warriors.
Durex Dragons...

It works in Japan.

Too late

It might get fans (and commentators) thinking a bit harder about what is happening on the field. Rather than looking at a bloke and saying "Derp he's a lock!" because he's wearing number 13, they might start to realise number 13 Glenn Stewart is playing right edge forward, number 13 Shaun Fensom is a centrefield support runner, and number 13 Frank-Paul Nuuausala is a third front rower.

They might also look more critically at how halves and fullbacks are used differently in different teams, although 'fullback' is still easy to pigeonhole due to his role in defence.

Now that is thinking. A team where everyone wears the same number.

Today's game was bought to you by the number 13, and the letter A

My point was that all three players play a different position despite wearing the same jersey number. This leads to lazy thinking in discussion of the game, even among Dally M judges who will be looking at all three for Dally M 'lock' of the year.

Plus none of them lock scrums.

Well the Dally M's will have to be redone.

We can have a 13 of the year instead. A canny player who selects the right number can be guaranteed a medal.

It's a game not an exam.

Watching the world clup championship and the super league sometimes on tv, I love how each player has their own number and name on the back of the shirt, so if you not a regular super league watcher you know what that kids name is that made that nice pass or made that nice run, not having to wait for the commentator to announce his name.

I think its time to bring the same in to the NRL,would look so much more professional if every player had their own number and the name on the back of the shirt, most other sports have it and I think it looks more professional, the 1-17 on game day is so old school time to move forward and help the TV Audience that don't watch regular NRL football.

When I'm watching my team play, I generally don't need the commentators to tell me who a bloke is - being a nut for my team, I already know...

Players name and his own number should appear on the back of jumpers. None of this #1 for fullback or #13 for lock. Lets the player pick his own number.

I've raised this in the past, simple answer - YES.

I also believe a players number should be individualized (e.g. NBA.)
I know i'll be crucified for this, and i know i'll get the "we're not the NBA, we're not this or that, we're rugby league."

What it does however is opens up future sales for past, present and future player jerseys.

Example - Jordans #23 bulls jersey still sells a high amount to this day. It personalizes a player to a fan.
Fans want THEIR fav player on THEIR jersey. If they potentially chop and change their number to a position they fill then it becomes worthless.

How many people these days would still buy a #7 Johns or #6 Lewis etc. Think about it.

Scotty I have been saying this for the past ten years. But some are just stuck in the old ways of doing things.

Melbourne did this for a while in the Kimmorley, Chris Anderson era.

Be interesting to hear feedback on why they went away from it?

you do realise that a great proportion of folks who follow rugby league live west of Olympic Park, and in Queensland?
