There was some booing when Mitchell first touched the ball. The connotation was pretty clear and it wasn't limited to one section of the crowd - although I believe most people didn't join in.Yeah we've now had multiple different people claim that it happened, but King hit who despises Latrell, and self-confessed Cronulla rioter Danish know better.
When the AFL made it fashionable, it was allowed to continue unabated and even encouraged by the AFL backed media, with blatant racist Sam Newman leading the charge and the more insidious Eddie McGuire joining in. The AFL even later admitted they should have stepped in earlier, although this was more of a face-saving and PR exercise.
The NRL have plenty of faults, but good on them for trying to nip this in the bud.
At Kogarah, something wasn't right. Drunks behind me joking about the booing in a stupid manner, using the C word liberally... and of course, certain rumours spreading across the ground.
One such rumour was that the Skull had managed to get through the gates. He is banned from the ground but occasionally sneaks in. This was confirmed when I saw him being escorted out by security - a sad and frail looking old man who needed the two security guards just to keep him steady on his feet. I'm not saying he was involved in any racism that day, although he has a track record. Perhaps it was just a coincidence.
And yeah, it's funny how you can be at the game and know that something is wrong. But a Cronulla riot apologist knows better.
