Is that the most one-sided refereeing performance you've seen this year?

It was an accident with them both going for a ball, it'd be like penalising a tackler for an accidental head clash. It was not foul play ergo not a penalty.

I'm left speechless that anyone would argue Mead did something wrong. Where do you even begin?

Just as much as Mead deliberately tried to drop him on his head.

Sorry bud, but you aren't exactly the height of impartiality

Who said anything about Mead's intent?

The penalty was for Oates being placed in a dangerous position as a result of the collision with David Mead.

He wasn't place anywhere
He fell on his own head after catching the ball
Then dropped it

Should've been Titans ball

It was a pretty bad attempt at contesting the ball from Mead, but I can't see a penalty in it anywhere.

I also can't see how this and a stupid kick result in 250 posts of discussion, worst officiating since 1908 and all that.

Oates jumps OVER Mead to catch the ball....how anyone can defend that call....
Second hand embarrassment.

Placed is the operative word, he wasn't placed as he wasn't tackled. It was a collision of two players going for the ball. If it had ended up with the Titans player on his head do you think the penalty would have gone the other way?

That's an interesting point.

The fact Oates was defending the kick as opposed to chasing it certainly had a bearing on the decision. We know that a player can't tackle a defensive player in the air, but it's a different story in attack.

However, it's very simple. Was Oates put into a dangerous position as a result of the collision with David Mead? Did Mead have any influence on the way Oates landed at all?

There you go.

The penalty wasn't for a mid-air tackle.

It was for putting Oates into a dangerous position.

Is this a rule ? It wasn't a tackle as they were both contesting the ball. Mead didn't put Oates in any position. Both have every right to contest the ball and accidents happen.

You are effectively making it impossible for Mead to contest the kick.

Oates got into a dangerous position because he a) jumped for the ball and b) because he landed on mead who was also going for the ball. I hate quoting Gould but Mead just can't disappear. It was an accident, thankfully oates wasn't hurt, get up and play the ball.
