"It’s very realistic to say that we’ll have a second team in Brisbane in 2023": V'landys

Play makers too, dont want 4 new teams that resemble the dogs and broncos at the moment, but then again the cowboys and knights started that way, actually most teams inagural teams started that way, it just seems everyone wants a winner 1st go, when it will and probably will take decades for success to ingrain an any new franchise, Melbourne storm, seem to be an anomaly, to the expansions of the past
they've already got the vest system in junior football in the last 5 years in the modified games to help develop halves , dummy halves & play makers , that could be the biggest developmental initiative the game has seen with those 12 year olds 5 .. 6 years ago only breaking onto the scene now

the most important element to succesfully expanding our comp by 1 .. 2 & eventually 4 new teams in the next decade is to make sure the development paths are in place & operating effectively spitting out talent left right & centre so they need to be financed appropriately.

however it looks its imperative we get development right. & that includes coaches too
I agree with you about development. It all comes down to our game neglecting the game at all levels below the NRL over the last 20 years. There was a period when the Queensland Cup was the de facto development system for NRL clubs from Sydney clubs around the mid-00s, but the NSWRL threw a tantrum and got rid of dual registration to prevent clubs like Manly from benefiting from this arrangement. Manly had their run of success while they were teamed up with the Sunshine Coast Falcons, who they renamed the Sea Eagles. Playersike Trent Hodgkinson and Daly Cherry-Evans learnt their trade through this arrangement.

These days it's a matter or who has the best roster management, coaching staff and appeal to up and coming players. Roosters, Panthers and Storm tick all of these boxes, and Penrith got there by poaching Ivan Clearly from the Tigers, mid-contract, after Gould initially have him the boot.

The 18th spot they should put out to tender. Let anyone who wants to bid bid and choose the best option be it Perth, NZ, PNG or Adelaide (or Singapore lol). Any of those options are strategically important long term (maybe not Singapore :) ) so lets see who can put together a strong bid that has best chance of long term success. Id say Perth and NZ2 are in the box seat with Perth ahead if Sage really can put $30mill on the table for a new club.
Singapore is a prime target for one of Sydney's smaller clubs. If you're the Dragons, stuck in Southern Sydney, which has around 500k and two teams fighting for marketshare, plus a part-time presence in regional city Wollongong with a long history of struggling on and off the field with two sub-par home grounds, then why wouldn't you look at moving to a city-state that has 5.5m and a state of the art indoor football stadia that's air conditioned and can accommodate 55k people?

Singapore has successfully hosted the Rugby 7s since 2002.

Plenty of businesses in Singapore who would love to worm their way into thee Australian market.

There is certainly money to be made taking marquee games such as Origin to Singapore but basing a club ft there isn't going to happen in my lifetime. Realistically NRL struggles to market itself in Sydney, do you really think they have the capability to reach a brand new audience in a different country?

With the right management the game could expand into Singapore -- NBL did on a far smaller budget -- but the game is destined to be run by insular wankers for eternity, so no, it won't happen.

and there in lies the problem! Its not like it hasnt been done before with Union expansion in Japan,Italy and Argentina, NFL into a global interest sport, rugby 7's circuit etc. But given NRL cant even get its sht together in this country other countries are a pipedream. Not because the product on the field is inferior, but the administrators of the game are very second class.

Anyways back to what is happening..... Will the NRL have the balls to announce expansion BEFORE the FTA TV deal is done? It could be a gamble if they dont get an increased FTA deal, they dont have $13mill a year floating around to invest in a new club unless its taken from elsewhere given the state of the games finances due to Covid.

I don't think it will matter, if anything i can bet you the ARLC will make the winning bid spend their own money for the salary cap, then when the rights get sorted following year, the pie will divie out accordingly throughout the 17 teams, i reckon it should just be a buy in, these bid teams are willing to do anything, and right now money is tight due to covid moving the season around, if you wanna build a team in Adelaide then build one, but if you want to promote an existing bidder then they should buy in

In related news the AFL has put off a decision on their own heartland expansion (Tasmania) until March 2022, when they will have a better idea of their finances as we start to return to normal ‘post 80% vax’ life. It is looking 50/50 to proceed. Issues are similar - financials, player depth, where to play games.
Is there still a chance that Bris 2 will not go ahead or that a decision will be postponed? Or is it simply which one of the three gets the nod?

The Western Reds and Adelaide Rams would be 26 and 24 years old if the game gave them a fair shake of the sauce bottle, with a strong supporter base like the Brisbane Lions, Sydney Swans and Melbourne Storm.

I read that Ch7 want one game a week. If PVL has any brains then he will have worded the deal with Foxtel to allow a fourth game to be broadcast on FTA. That would allow a game to be broadcast on Thurs/Fri/Sat night and Sunday arvo, or maybe move one of these slots to Monday night so there's no competition from AwFuL. I'd imagine Ch7 would like to air NRL on a Monday night when there's no AwFuL match going up against it.

v'landys won't commit to it , expansion happening at all based also on $$ how we're looking at seasons end.
I think tho , there has been a bit of book fiddling & it may have us in a position to say we're ready

you'll recall the NRL announced a 24 million loss for 2020
but that didn't include the SOO in November which netted 20 Million plus dollars

if the 2020 SOO & 2021 SOO are included in the bottom line this year
the NRL will announce around a 15 million $ profit & justify this as the finances being ok to go ahead with the 17th team

So Brisbane 2 is being brought in to bail out broke arse Sydney clubs?
the right management for me is the one that never considers such a ridiculous idea as to take a side to singapore

its laughable
How is it laughable?

We're living in the Asian century and Singapore is close enough and in the same time zone as Perth. A team there would ensure the Perth market gets to have a game broadcast at prime time every week once the Pirates are introduced to the NRL.

The Rugby 7s circuit have held an event there each year since 2002 and are contracted to continue fielding it until 2023.

Do I need to remind you that brain-dead spastics from the NSWRFL and Sydney media called Queenslanders and the QRL stupid and crazy in 1980 for introducing State of Origin?

The Sydney media and NSWRFL said it wouldn't work and would be canned after 1980. If these dickheads had their way then the largest event on the RL calendar wouldn't exist.

I'll tell you what's stupid beyond belief. Having two teams in Southern Sydney, which has only 500k people, few businesses to draw money from and produces bugger all players. That's just plain dumb, no matter how the suburbanites try to spin it. At least Singapore has 5.5m people and proven itself as a place willing to embrace new sports.

you have to remember though that was from a $25mill profit from the year before so the bottom line was actually a $50mill turn around. This year is likely to be equally painful with the second year of the Ch9 revised deal costing $35mill and the extra costs of relocating the game, extra NRL club grants plus smaller than hoped for crowds. Last year also accounted for hardly any money going to grass roots and NZRL compared to previous year. The actual real cost savings in admin were less than $10mill.
Unless the Fox tv deal is up, we know the NZ TV deal is up by around $10mill a year, and FTA deal is up then it will be hard to find the expansion money without taking it from elsewhere. Also it would be unlikely that the clubs and players aren't going to want more over the next 6 years.
