Parramatta co-captain Reni Maitua is one of at least dozen players Ricky Stuart will move on in the biggest clean-out in the club’s history.
After just 12 rounds at the helm of the Blue and Golds, Stuart has made a call on the roster at his disposal and it spells the end for some of the club’s highest-profile names.
Fairfax Media has been told that Maitua, Matt Keating, Ben Smith, Willie Tonga, Ben Roberts, Cheyse Blair, Daniel Harrison, Nathan Smith, Pat O’Hanlon and Matthew Eisenhuth are among those on the chopping block. Some of those on the list have recently re-signed or are on contract for 2014.

After years of underperformance – including "winning" the wooden spoon last year – the club has decided to act. In a letter to Eels fans and members, chief executive Ken Edwards declared it was time for the playing group to be "accountable" for the woeful results.

"In Rugby League, we are judged on the field by our performance and ultimately results," Edwards wrote.
"In recent times the Parramatta Eels have not fared well in either category. Our Members, Fans and Sponsors deserve and demand more than what we have achieved and today the Eels declare that enough is enough.
"This morning, with the full support of the entire Eels organisation, head coach Ricky Stuart informed the full playing squad that the services of a group of selected players will not be required beyond this season.
"Some of these players are off contract at the completion of this season while the others are contracted for 2014 but have been told that they are not a part of the club's plans moving forward and have been offered early releases.
"Over a long period of time, there have been a lot of people who have lost their jobs at the Eels without the playing group ever being held accountable. As of today the playing group is being held accountable.
"We will not be commenting publicly on the specifics of who the players are or why they are not a part of the club's plans beyond 2013. We do however believe it is vitally important that you, our valued Members and Sponsors, heard this from the club first.
"We believe that through a full pre-season and the opening 12 weeks of the NRL competition each player in our squad has been given every opportunity to perform at the expected level. Unfortunately not all are up to the standards that we require.
"As we have said constantly, a winning team culture is not built overnight but for it to develop it is reliant on talent, belief and commitment. The club is building towards a brighter future for this football team and however tough the decisions that must be made, they are made to deliver the club long-term sustainable success. We strive for excellence and will not settle for anything less. Members and sponsors who invest their hard earned each year deserve that at the very least.
"Our members, sponsors and fans have suffered long enough. We truly believe today is a defining moment for this club; it's the day we drew a line in the sand. We will not be stationary in our approach on the field or off it, because success simply doesn't allow for it. We cannot guarantee instant results, there will be more tough days to come but what we can promise is that each week Ricky will send out 17 players in blue and gold that will possess a desire to win."
The Eels have said they will respect the privacy of the players that will be moved on

U can't make a player redundant. Redundancy laws state u can only make someone redundant if their current role is being changed or removed from an organisation, which certainly isn't the case here.

As they are contracted - we have to pay out the remainder of the contract value - or find another club willing to. Whether or not we have enough money under the cap this year to pay out next years contracts for some players remains to be seen I guess.

Unfortunately if those dud players that are contracted for 2014 (that SK signed) refuse to leave we will still be stuck with them next year

A couple of them were re-signed after Kearney got the arse but before Sticky arrived.

I was surprised and also concerned Hindy and Burt would put off their retirements.

Here is a question for nrl cap experts - lets say we still have some available cap left for this year - is there anything stopping us by using this cap space by paying "redundancy" payments to players that have contracts beyond this year. Eg we want to get rid of Harrison but he has a contract for next year so we get him to agree to take an extra $100k this year to terminate his contract.
OMC would be the best bloke to answer this. And i agree with him 100% about Reni, he has been awful for most of this season. He has been totally outplayed by a 19 yr old kid most of this season. He gets away with quite a bit because the rest of our backrow are so fricking bad.

To be a bit more balanced: the knock on Kearney was that he wasn't able to be hard enough on the players.

Perhaps he's more of a contributing factor to current circumstances than a victim of them??

It's only taken his replacement 12 games to kick heads. So it certainly looks as if the past bloke had a part to play

This.

As an outsider looking in, it does seem as though SK's laid back attitude may have rubbed off on the players.

Come 2014/2015, RS has no excuses.

I'd like to be the first to congratulate ParraFirst for making it clear to Stuart and Edwards which players aren't good enough for 1st grade

Wow. They will need to recruit another 20 to cover for these troops.

#academy

Keen to see how many of the 'academy' kids are ready to come into the fulltime squad next year.

The following are too old for NYC next year:
Brasington
Bugden
Charlie
Gorman
Moeakiola
Tangira
Tuitahi
Ualesi
Vescio

Are any of them good enough for the top 35? I guess we'll find out if they're still at the club next season.

Well that's not technically correct. That certainly applies to the role of "ongoing" permanent employees, but not temporary "contracted" employees. I dare say that no NRL player is an "ongoing" permanent employee.

However, Im not sure if you can pay them out next years contract and put it against this years cap either.

if what jodeci posted earlier in the week is on the money about potentially losing the major sponsor we were getting for next year then it may be that they were trying to paint a public picture oof a brighter future to not just fans but also sponsors, even though most of the recruitment mentioned is already public knowledge.

Sponsors were mentioned in the email. Definitely looks like some messaging there.

A club probably could, unless they're Parramatta

And our post Keating era begins..........

Interesting that Sticky thought Reni was captaincy material, now doesn't rate him as a first grader ??

Those are the moves Penrith have made over the past 2 seasons. Seems to be working out positively for them so far?

It has indeed, and this is the kind of clean out I expected from Kearney, especially after telling the extremely talented Grothe and Tahu to f**k off.

He cleaned out plenty of shit but it seems many of the youngsters and journeymen he brought in picked up the loser attitude or had it to start with.

Tonga and Maitua have won premierships and played for Australia. Yet they come to Parra and turn into losers?

I hope this cleanout is as big as the rumours say.
