So both Dufty and Field are both around 85kg? Brilliant. Having them compete with Kurt Mann for fullback is an excellent position for us to be in.

I still think Mann is a viable fullback. I know he had that absolute match fixer against the Sharks but the week before against Melbourne, literally his first touch of the ball was a beautiful cut out pass to Nightingale to score in the corner. I still think of that pass and get such a violent erection, I have stretch marks up to my earlobes.

Dufty can definitely do that (and I think may actually pass a bit too much) but I'm not sure Field has the pass in him. I'd rather him at 5/8 or coming off the bench at the thirty minute mark for one of the backrowers and just wreak follow Vaughan around like a lost puppy waiting for an offload, Craig-Wing-in-Origin-style because his speed is an absolute weapon.
This is my thinking also. Increased competition for position 1-5 is only a good thing. Hopefully we are seeing the start of a good crop of juniors who carry us forward the next few years.

I just hope they get a crack. Last pre-season there was plenty of excitement around Field and Dufty and the minute Dugan got injured they moved Nighty to fullback. That was very negative in hindsight.
Get the mediocre guys like lafai, Macdonald out of the team and get these youngsters in.

Remember it well. I can only hope/wish(I am doing that a lot lately)that now there has been a bit of a player cleanout SuperCoach has no choice but to bring them on.
By all means I have no issue if there are no changes if players are delivering but that wasn’t the case from about R12 last year.

Its funny people want the juniors to slot straight into first grade before actually playing any real grade football and if they have a shocker they get absolutely hammered and told they are shit.

Lafai, McDonald and Nightingale will not get dropped that is obvious to see and you sure as hell wouldn't just say for an example slot Field onto the wing that is a disaster waiting to happen.

Players like Lomax as an example he needs to prove he can handle the step up to the ISP and when he has then you would say okay its your time.

Millward has step the path for these young men they just have to prove they are ready and imo i think most will succed.

Agree with this. Next in line in the centres would be Herbert I imagine (he had a strong enough season in ISP and wasn't dropped back to 20s), while Garrick/Lomax would likely be looking at wing spots for their chance.

Field would be looking to compete for fullback and if Dufty shines then I can't see where he'll fit in, unless Widdop leaves.

I just hope he has worked on using his shoulders when driving in for a tackle, because his arm grabbing was my biggest concern with him last year.

He talking about field.
He defence is his biggest problem.
I'm hopping that with increased size and strength that he will improve

I was s bit perturbed with article re Field bulking up
I cannot see how forcing himself to eat that much extra food in order to bulk up so much, so quickly can be healthy for him
He has s naturally small frame which will develop slowly and to put that pressure on his body to cope with the extra weight
concerns me greatly.

Sounds like we're trying to turn him into Owen Craigie. You'd have to think Field will lose some of his pace, carrying an extra 13kgs.

I know my 18 second 100m time drops to about 25 seconds when I stack on 13kgs.

Jai had 2 significant issues last year:

1) Poor tackling Technique
2) Lack of size

He is in the process of attending to point 2. We all hope he manages to maintain his speed. If he does address both issues there are a number of positions in the back line he could initially compete for.

Jai's aim is to play full back. If both Field and Dufty rise to FG standard it will be one very interesting season for the Red V !!

Just to put his weight gain in perspective he has increased by 13 kgs in a short period of time
I invite everyone to go and find 4 normal house bricks, then tie 1 on to each calf and the hold 1 in each hand and then go for a walk or a jog.
At 20 years of age and not yet fully developed it seems a bit drastic to me I sincerely hope that they have his best interests and not their own at heart.

I think the most important part states that he has put on 13kg since the start of last season. The other is the fact he put on half of that in 6 weeks since he last played. So 6.5kg in 6 weeks the other 6.5 throughout 2017.
I think dieticians and trainers would know what hes capable of without compromising his speed factor. Hrs actually a big (tall) boy and still growing so lets wait to see him in trials etc.

That's not how putting on size/weight works..

So you don’t think 13kgs in a short period of time on a smallish frame is a concern?
Regardless of wherher it is muscle or bulk or whatever the same heart and lungs of a developing 20 year old has to deal with it whilst he tries to get the same if not higher energy outputs.
Whilst we have dietitians and physics etc etc looking after players there sole purpose is to get s body shape they believe suits RL but none of them are heart specialists or orthopaedic specialists and that is why I have some concerns
I can’t think of any health specialist that would think force feeding yourself to gain 15% - 20% body weight at 20 years of age is perfectly good for you.

Well said dragonslayer
A lot of health professionals are involved and they say 1kg is about right because as he get back into training.
Especially after Christmas he will lose half of that due to heat and sweating.
