Don't need to play fullback or 5/8 to throw a cut out pass. I look at Manly and their best back line player is Lyon and the attack can revolve around him from centre. I can't see why Hayne can't be used in the same way and quite successfully as well. I think it could take the focus away from him and make him more dangerous.

Doesn't Lyon play on the right outside DCE usually and then the ball playing Glen Stuart? I have no doubt that he is their best backline player but I certainly don't think the attack revolves around him. I think he looks that good simply because he is that good. I do see merit in moving Hayne wider though to make him more inclined to run the ball ala Jamie Lyon as opposed to his go to no look cut out pass.

f**ken oath. You lose so much go-forward with small wingers.

He has a hell of a lot of speed though. What he lacks in size is more than compensated by this.

Is it really statistically better to have a 'big' winger rather than a small, elusive one?

Fact > Opinion

To answer that we should look at rep teams and premiership winners. When is the last time you saw a small winger involved with either of these?

Sorry champ I just answered your question.

My question wasn't who, it was when. The answer was "not anytime recently".

BTW, he also played SOS and For Australia.

Played once for Australia at the start of his career and once for NSW at the end. That's token rep appearances. Like Luke Burt in Gillard's XIII.

Trust me, there will be no more Luke Burt sized wingers in first grade ever again. That means Jake Mullaney will play fullback or nothing.

Oh ok, but Jason nightingale thinks otherwise.

Nightingale is a monstere compared to Burt, but i reckon pound for pound he is one of the better wingers in the comp.

Well he ain't a big winger.

Considering many wingers are as big as forwards, than yes he could be considered 'small'.

If Nightingale is small then I've got no problem with small wingers. Tiny wingers like Burt, on the other hand, belong back in the 90s.

Actually Burt isn't tiny! [he just plays like a midget right Sefto?]

178cm 88kgs

For comparison, here are some random other wingers I could think of:

Beau Ryan 85kgs
Nathan Merritt 86kgs
Dale Copley 84kgs
Kevin Gordon 86kgs
Dean Whare 84kgs
Roger Tuivasa Sheck 88kgs
Nathan Stapleton 88kgs
Jason Nighingale 88kgs

Pretty sure that would be the most of the guys in first grade who are 88kgs or lighter. Some of them are pretty good at the meterage game early in the sets.

Having said that, I agree with the basic thesis of Pou: the wingers of the future are generally going to be much bigger and stronger. And poor little Jake Mullaney at 80kgs looks a fair bit too light for the modern game!! He needs to spend some serious time in the weights room before he's a first grader - even Ben Barba is massive in comparison (86kgs).
