James Graham will become just the eighth player to make 50 Test appearances when he captains a Great Britain Lions team featuring Jackson Hastings and Lachlan Coote against Tonga Invitational in Hamilton on Saturday.

The Australian-born duo were named by Lions coach Wayne Bennett when the team was finally announced on Tuesday night after a fire at Auckland's Sky City forced the Great Britain squad to evacuate their hotel and relocate to Hamilton ahead of schedule.

Bennett also selected Canberra trio Josh Hodgson, John Bateman and Elliott Whitehead, Sydney Roosters winger Ryan Hall, South Sydney prop Thomas Burgess and the St George Illawarra pair of Gareth Widdop and Graham.

The 34-year-old Graham is the only member of the Great Britain squad to have previously played for the Lions, making five appearances in 2006-07, along with 44 Tests for England.

The Liverpool-born prop will become only the fourth British player to reach a half-century of Tests after Jim Sullivan, Mick Sullivan and Adrian Morley.

They were joined last autumn by the former New Zealand captain Ruben Wiki, and the Australian trio of Darren Lockyer, Cameron Smith and Petero Civoniceva – who also represented Fiji – as the seven players to be awarded Golden Caps by the Rugby League International Federation in recognition of their achievement in winning 50 international caps.

Now Graham is set to become the eighth recipient of a Golden Cap.

Coote, the former Penrith and North Queensland fullback, will wear the No.1 jersey for Great Britain, while Hastings will also debut alongside Widdop in the halves after turning his career around with Salford since leaving Manly midway through the 2018 season.

Wow, he is in some high altitude. Well done big fella.

Also, hats off to Hastings. Big turn around with the young lad and a good outcome which could have gone south.
Yeh for his personal life fine..... but I bet his dad may have been a chance for England too under current rules which I dont agree with but back then the Poms were also pretty strong.
Back then as good as a player he was it was too difficult to get in the Aussie side back in the late 70's / 80's....when it was the best of the best,,,.but back then i sure he would not of even considered it.

Just these days it seems just about everyone has a go at representing somewhere at International level even from lower grades and I feel frustrated to what is the true standing and worth of a International player except for some who are truly playing for the love of their chosen nation....to what it used to...when it was the best of the best..and still seems to be in other sports except NRL.
Just my opinion again on this matter...and now rant over.
Many will disagree and say it is good for the game with some players even chop and change countries they play for.
I dont think it is a good look. It is a money grab for some.

We were in a HC house in Peakhurst and the Lan Choo coupons lived in the back of the 2nd draw LHS of the sink.
I well remember the trips to town to look at what was available and a dinner set, a pressure cooker, an electric fry pan were all procured over the years all due to our addiction to tea.
Luckily mum had lost of sisters so when they came visiting the pot would never get cold during the entire time they visited. I can still smell grandma's fried scones in the electric fry pan and her ginger nut biscuits in the oven whilst the tea was brewing.
For the record Mum's Craven A's were in the back of the 3rd draw.

76-79 Year 7-10. My sisters both went there 5 and 10 years before me
My eldest brother was in the 1st year intake and went 64 - 69
Middle brother 65 - 70
Myself 67 - 72
Had the distinction of playing in the 1st team to win a RL comp for the school in 67. We had 2 x 1st year teams and both played the curtain raiser to the 4th form team (our oldest year at that stage) so our teams both won as did the senior team but we finished an hour or so before they played.
Poor old Mr White (Chalky) was wondering what all the swearing was about and if it was appropriate, the deputy head Mr Baulme and Doug Nelson were cheering madly and ignoring Chalky,
Mr Coulton the metal work teacher and our coach was telling us to bash them as hard as we could and Mr Mason the PE teacher was sneaking a drink or two from his hip flask.
Funny day all round and our fledgling high school went from no pennants to 3 all in 1 afternoon.
Somewhere I still have a Bembooka with the photos in it.
Ask your oldest sister if she remembers Harry Williams who also lived in Isaac Street?

Bennett labels Graham one of the finest leaders he's seen

On the eve of James Graham playing his 50th Test, Great Britain coach Wayne Bennett declared the Dragons prop one of the best captains he's worked with.

In a coaching career that's spanned more than three decades, Bennett has mentored some of the game's greatest leaders at club, state and international level.

"He's right up the top with the best of them," Bennett said of Graham heading into Saturday night's Test match at Tonga at Waikato Stadium.

"He's very passionate, very good and it's a pleasure to have him.

"Sam [Burgess] is not here, Sean O'Loughlin's not here, but the team won't miss a beat with James."

But despite the significance of the achievement – with Graham becoming just the eighth player in history to reach 50 Test appearances, and only the fourth Brit to do it – Bennett said there won't be any fanfare.

"That just distracts you, all that stuff," Bennett said.

"He knows how important it is tomorrow night, he knows what it means to him.

"50 Test matches for England and Great Britain is quite a remarkable achievement, very few have done it.

"But at the same time all the noise and fuss about it, making a big deal about it, it just distracts everybody about what they have got to do.

"We don't want to do that. [James] is a great team player and that's how he thinks, and I think the same way."

It's a privilege to have that badge on your chest again

James Graham on the return of the Lions
The game at Waikato Stadium will be the first time Great Britain have taken the field in 12 years.

Graham, who played five times for Great Britain between 2006-07, said the Tonga match will be a chance for many of his teammates to realise a lifelong dream.

"The Lions is an iconic brand ... It's a privilege to have that badge on your chest again," Graham said.

"When you're young and you're sort of dreaming about where your future might take you, the pinnacle of our sport for a lot of these lads was playing for Great Britain.

"It means a lot to our fans, especially that older generation that grew up watching Great Britain."

Ten players who took the field for England in the 2017 Rugby League World Cup semi-final win over Tonga will line up for Great Britain on Saturday night.

Graham, who is among that surviving group, said for those players there are valuable lessons to lean on from that game two years ago. One of them is playing in front of boisterous Tonga fans.

"That game, the atmosphere itself is something that we will all learn from, we are not going to be surprised by that," Graham said.

"Absolutely [the best atmosphere I've experienced], bar none, easy. They didn't stop singing the whole time.

"We are going to have to play close to our best to win. We know what this team is capable of that we are coming up against."

Meanwhile, Bennett said his new-look spine – which includes Australia-born fullback Lachlan Coote and halfback Jackson Hastings – has progressed well at training this week.

"They'll only get better. It is a new-look group of players there, but they are all experienced and good players," Bennett said.

"They were pretty good [Friday], been pretty good all week, so I think there's a lot of confidence among them."

I will...My eldest sister would of been in 1st form in 66 I think as she was born 54...LOL
But we lived up the top end in between Forest and Belmore Roads where we knew all neighbours in that section playing in the street but the Williams dont ring a bell.
The old beetroot face of Dougy Nelson the Science Master. Boy you feared him and he could cane. I got 4 cuts from him in Year 9 for pea (paper) shooting a girl towards the front of the class in the head...as she screamed how much it hurt...as if...but I can tell you the cane did
Out of those others you mention Dougy was the only one left by the time I got there
