He labelled both Maloney and Cronk as very good players but very average halfbacks.

Strange comment.

Only six premierships won between them.

St George's eleven straight could have been under threat if either had been a good halfback.

James Maloney is like Kris Keating without the defence - he wouldn't solve any of Parra's current problems. Other than goalkicking if Burt gets injured.

And Sandow's worth what we'll be paying him. By the end of his contract he'll certainly be worth more than that.

Sure, if players got paid for popularity Sandow would be worth f**k all but that's not how it works.
Ooof.

To be fair, Sandow was a gun until they banned the shoulder charge. Then he went from a weak defender to a non-defender. There's no place in the game for those. Maloney did well to go from a 23 year old reserve grade speed bump to a multiple premiership winning speed bump. Goes to show if you get your body in front it doesn't really matter if you can tackle.

They were both done at their clubs and needed a change. Maloney was rubbish in 2017

Both needed a change is some good rewriting of history. James Maloney was on to his fifth club when he joined the Panthers. Maloney wanted an upgrade on his contract. The Sharks justifiably baulked as he had a contract which would signal his departure. It was reported Matty Moylan didn't see eye to eye with Anthony Griffin which is why he wanted out. Moylan went better at the Panthers but yeah the injuries played a part for sure at the Sharks.

Great career and a player who squeezed every ounce out of the lemon, but Maloney is pulling the plug at just the right time.

He was poor in defeat at St Helens last week, albeit in a much-weakened Catalans side, but has produced on a weekly basis.

As the competition's leading goal kicker he has definitely played his part in the Dragons now being odds-on to win their first minor premiership in 2021. But whether they can go further than and reach their first GF remains to be seen.

Thought for the day: how would Maloney be remembered if he never left the Storm? Personally I think he’d be one of the most hated players this side of the millennium. Around the Cam Smith level.

Fantastic player, and who should have about 20 origins to his name, but for NSW sides being selected by a flock of geese during the early part of the 2010s.

I dunno about Moylan but Maloney was not putting in in 2017 prior to contract decisions. Maybe he was upset about the negotiations. But ask any sharks fan, they will tell you he was not great

Maloney has always been good for a trash performance or two a season. Didn't matter though since he could bring his A game when it mattered.

His ability to shrug off mistakes was amazing, would immediately reset and try the same thing again.

Should have had his jaw broken every time he chucked a boot into the stands. Was a complete flop for Penrith

Jimmy had his moments at Penrith, but his combination with Cleary did not turn out fully as anticipated. Overall, an OK signing, and probably allowed us to better transition Luai into the NRL as well.

A very good career, and he was a good signing for Penrith.

Didn't deliver a premiership but early 2018 was the best we played under Hook and our best football since 2004. At that time Maloney was in great form, Origin and injuries killing the second half of his season. If he stays fit we might have gone a bit deeper that year.

Its a fair point that Chris Sandow used the shoulder charge as defense mechanism to protect himself from other players. But I still think at the end of the day Sandow should never have left Souths. Some of Sandows time at Parramatta was derailed by personal issues. But at Souths he fitted better in their structures, seemed at home there, and was making quite a career for himself.

He turned up at Parramatta out of shape, had a bad season and his confidence was never the same. Sandow made the point he took the Eels offer because he had three children. I understand that but if he stayed at Souths he would have made more money in the long run establishing himself with the one club. The South's offer wasn't peanuts either.

Sandow has always been a bit too lax about his career. Apparently before he went to Souths he was part of the Titans squad and was let go because of absenteeism. Souths never made the finals either while Sandow was there. Unlike another half-back that would take over after Sandow left in Adam Reynolds which in hindsight for Souths it really worked out for the best.

Sandow's team was bottom four for points conceded every year of his career. But in his three years at Souths (combined) they scored more points than anyone else. In hindsight he was only suited to a strong club.
