Jarryd Hayne denies accusations of rape in US during 49ers NFL stint

NRL star Jarryd Hayne has vehemently denied he raped a woman in the United States in 2015 when he was playing gridiron with the San Francisco 49ers.

UpdatedUpdated 9 hours ago
In court documents filed in a civil suit, the woman claims Hayne took her back to his San Jose home and raped her when she was drunk.

She met some of Hayne's friends when working at a local restaurant and they all caught up after a 49ers game, documents lodged in a County of Santa Clara court state.

The documents say the woman, who isn't named, took Hayne's "undergarment" in case she needed proof of the alleged incident.

Hayne rejected the allegations in a statement released by his Sydney lawyer Ramy Qutami on Wednesday.

"He unequivocally and vehemently denies the allegations which are the subject of the civil complaint," the statement read.

The Santa Clara County District Attorney's Office reviewed the criminal case after the woman went to the police in May 2016, California's The Mercury News reports.

The case was rejected in October 2016, however, due to insufficient evidence.

Hayne said he had previously provided "all reasonable assistance" to authorities after the woman went to police.

Hayne's club, The Parramatta Eels released the following statement:

"The Club has been made aware of serious allegations regarding Jarryd Hayne during his time with the San Francisco 49ers. We were unaware of these allegations until they were made public today," Chairman Max Donnelly said.

"As with any legal matter, it is important that we follow due process and ensure that we review all relevant information available, including giving Jarryd the opportunity to respond."

"The Club will continue to monitor the situation and when appropriate we will provide an update to members and media."

The NRL said the Integrity Unit would continue to monitor the civil case.

“We note that the police in the United States did not proceed with any criminal proceedings but we will review the information available and continue to monitor the civil case,” a spokesman said.

The Rugby League Players Association has told SBS that it was a private matter before the courts and would not be making any comment at this stage.

They said they were trying to get in touch with Hayne and his support team as soon as possible.

This club needs to be shut down

Where's Bourbon Beccy when you need her most? I want to hear her view on this so far unsubstantiated claims of rape

Right now it does smell like buyers remorse

Alcohol has been around for centuries but we still haven't got the laws necessary to combat things like this nor does society have the answers

Take note uggos you could be next

So, if he was also heavily intoxicated, could he bring a counter suit against the plaintiff.....? Just curious, or is it only women that can be taken advantage of?

This is complete and utter rubbish

Even when it is a defamation case and on the face of it what the applicant wants is their reputation back it still comes back to cash. It still comes back to what loss have you suffered, reduce it to cash.

That is the only way to compensate. Even then it can and often is about more than cash. For some people it is about nothing more than being believed and vindicated.

Not saying that this case is or isn't about money, but to say only rich people are the targets of civil suits is completely wrong.

I watched Seven's coverage of this story on the 6pm news and it seemed by their language and tone that they considered him guilty and wanted him nailed for it.
I wonder if Nine's approach was different?

T-Boon your supposed to be gone for the month. Get out of here

I negotiated an early release with one of the moderators. The terms were "we will release you, but you have to come up with more great ideas for the game...at least one a week".

Probably payback for the fact they paid for coverage of his 49ers games only to see him sitting on the bench.

SMH has released the court documents which detail the plaintiff's accusations.

Her recollection of events and the information in the documents would lead me to believe her case is not strong. I am happy to be corrected by those with a greater knowledge of the law than mine.

Looking more and more like a desperate cash grab as time goes on. The timing would suggest she's trying to play into the public firestorm surrounding the #metoo thing

I haven't followed this that closely, but a mate suggested to me that Hayne had admitted they had consensual sex?
If so, his case is pretty much shot to bits because of her impaired state and multiple witnesses seemingly available to speak to that state, she can't give informed consent. So if he had sex with her in a heavily impaired state, by the letter of the law, he'll be found guilty

But i could have been lead wrong on this, has Hayne admitted to having sex with her?
