I think there was a massive wave of support early on when it seemed like he was going to do something amazing ... but i think that honeymoon passed and he'd have to take his playing career to another level to cash in again

+1 to this

I think they hype train surrounding him won't be as huge this pre-season, They'll still write about him, sure. They'll always write about him, but as far as driving merch sales and the like, I think we saw the height of that last year.

Unless he does something huge, like get a starting position or something big like that, but that is unlikely this year. He'll more than likely stay on the 49ers practice squad this year I'd guess.

How many novalties are on that list?

I love jarryd - and i think what he has done is great - I wish it had of panned out even better .... but in reality this #43 ranking is just a special one of case of momentary bangwagoning ..... still pretty cool, but gotta call a spade a spade

Looks like the Vic media have a new NFL darling.

The Broncos added depth to their defensive line by selecting Georgia Tech's Adam Gotsis. He's a 6'4", 287lb defensive end who will compete for reps behind Vance Walker, Jared Crick, and Kenny Anunike.

He is a team captain who over from Australia and is still learning American rules football. He played Australian rules football growing up, so he is still developing. He is a high motor, gritty guy who will be a pain in the trenches.

Australian Lachlan Edwards picked by New York Jets in 2016 NFL Draft

Multiple Australians have been picked in the NFL Draft for the first time after punter Cameron Edwards was selected in the seventh round by the New York Jets.
After Adam Gotsis was picked in the second round of the draft, it was thought that several Aussies were in line to join him as the three day event drew to a close.

Edwards, a product of Sam Houston State University, had his name called by the Jets with their final selection of the draft, at pick 235 overall.
It was expected that both Edwards and compatriot Tom Hackett would be among the highest-picked players at their position, and after the San Diego Chargers took the first punter of the draft (Texas A&M's Drew Kaser) in the fourth round, both were primed to come off the board shortly after to teams in need of leg strength.
Denver had the chance to double down on their Australian contingent, but took Syracuse punter Riley Dixon instead. It is thought that they were tossing up between him and Hackett.
The Jets eventually snapped up Hackett as a free agent. They have a history of signing Australians, with former AFL star Ben Graham spending three years with the team.
Australia punters Jordan Berry (Pittsburgh Steelers) and Brad Wing (New York Giants) play in the NFL. Other past Australian punters include trail blazer Darren Bennett, Mat McBriar and Sav Rocca.
Gotsis, from Georgia Tech, spent his first day at the Broncos, enjoying a tour of their Denver facility and fronting local media.
"Watching film on him, he is the type of player we like," Denver defensive line coach Bill Kollar told reporters.
"He plays hard, runs to the ball, has some pass rush ability that we are happy about."
The Draft wrapped up at around 8:45am (AEDT) after a mammoth final day, which saw four rounds of picks take place over more than six hours. The first round was held on Friday morning (AEDT) and the second and third rounds on Saturday.
This is far from the end for the remaining undrafted Aussies: Brad Craddock, Jamie Keehn, Alex Kinal and Blake Muir will all have the opportunity to sign as free agents.
Kalan Reed, a defensive back from Southern Miss, was awarded the 'Mr Irrelevant' title for being the final pick in the draft, going to the Titans with the 253rd selection.

Jarryd Hayne survives San Francisco 49ers cuts ahead of NFL season

Jarryd Hayne has survived round one of the San Francisco 49ers' cuts ahead of the next NFL season.

The NFL team announced on Saturday (AEST) they have waived Kendall Gaskins, one of Hayne's rivals for a running back position.

Gaskins, quarterback Dylan Thompson, offensive lineman Jordan Devey and kicker Corey Acosta were cut to create room on the 90-man roster for nine of the team's 11 draft picks and 12 undrafted rookie free agents.

Coach Chip Kelly will make further cuts to get the team down to a 53-man squad for the start of the season in September.

The 49ers are likely to waive two more running backs.

Another addition to the roster and fresh competitor for Hayne is 22-year-old University of Florida running back Kelvin Taylor, drafted by the 49ers last week.

They have Hayne, Taylor, Carlos Hyde, Shaun Draughn, DuJuan Harris and Mike Davis on the roster, but are expected to only keep four.

A key to Hayne's survival will likely be if Kelly values the former Parramatta star as a punt or kick returner on the special teams unit and a back-up running back.

With teams restricted to taking 46 players into a game, players like Hayne who can play multiple positions are essential.

Last season Hayne was waived and then signed to the 49ers' practice squad after then head coach Jim Tomsula lost faith in Hayne when he fumbled three times as a punt returner.

The cut-throat nature of the NFL, and a reality check for any NRL or AFL players contemplating a move to the US, was also on display on Thursday when former AFL player Joel Wilkinson was cut by the Arizona Cardinals just two months after he was signed.

If Hayne doesn't make the cut for an NFL team this year, Parra buying a few million dollars worth of Hayne jerseys and signing then him up to a minimum contract wouldn't be seen as dodgy would it?

The next lot of roster cuts are around the start of September, now that he has survived this cut i can't imagine he'll be back this year regardless if he makes it or not.

And he will end up at the Rorters after the Olympics.....

My bet would be he wasn't likely to make it and decided to make it look like his decision to leave. He did well to get as far as he did.
