Competing for the Olympics when you have put all your effort and energy into making the NFL is not a better alternative to becoming a household name in the NFL. Tepai gave up the olympics to stay with the Eels, who compared to the 49ers are a blip on the radar. The ordinary person in Australia cares more about a sports code than the olympics these days, rattle off a list of your favorite athletes and I doubt few if any will contain Olympians. Making it big in the NFL was "his dream" and obviously the dream was shattered.
Hayne obviously has some long term plans lined up (with the Roosters) after seeing the odds ahead of him as insurmountable. That's the bottom line. He achieved more than most people thought he would and that's the end of that chapter. Now don't forget to buy his DVD Add in the fact that he might not even be able to compete with Fiji and the story becomes more transparent. The effort was no longer worth the reward.
