Competing for the Olympics when you have put all your effort and energy into making the NFL is not a better alternative to becoming a household name in the NFL. Tepai gave up the olympics to stay with the Eels, who compared to the 49ers are a blip on the radar. The ordinary person in Australia cares more about a sports code than the olympics these days, rattle off a list of your favorite athletes and I doubt few if any will contain Olympians. Making it big in the NFL was "his dream" and obviously the dream was shattered.

Hayne obviously has some long term plans lined up (with the Roosters) after seeing the odds ahead of him as insurmountable. That's the bottom line. He achieved more than most people thought he would and that's the end of that chapter. Now don't forget to buy his DVD ;) Add in the fact that he might not even be able to compete with Fiji and the story becomes more transparent. The effort was no longer worth the reward.

Couple of points, Hayne has already shown he doesn't make decisions purely on the money being offered. He left league for nothing to take a chance with NFL and this current decision leaves him again with no contract ( yes I know he would have some substantial sponsors.)

Also it's been suggested and I don't know how true it is, but a players contract is not counted in the cap (for the first year ?) if they come from Union to league. Is this correct ?

Actually it can't be true as pretty sure SBW contract was counted in the cap for the roosters

mmmmm!! I still think he was tapped...

ABC news just reported that The Special One was tapped...........by Fiji Rugby, they offered him a spot in the squad and he allegedly said it was too good an offer to knock back as Fiji are favs for the gold medal.

What a simple response. You read ABC news though so that is expected.

If you can go by the Sam Burgess precedent, I believe that former players who return to the NRL, have to go on a teams salary cap at the level in which they left. Now that the NRL has deemed all Parra's TPA's since 2013 are under the salary cap, I'd suggest that someone would be up for at least $1.2m to $1.3m under the salary cap for The Plane...

I think I'm over Hayne at this point now.

It was his life long dream to play Rugby League

Then, It was his life long dream to play in the NFL..

Now, It's his life long dream to play rugby in the Olympics?

I'm done. I don't care if we sign him, I really don't.

Oh crap, I think you are right. But if he was signed by another side, he would presumably only count for the amount we had him on in our cap in 2014.

It was his life long dream to go to the Olympics, he never said rugby.

Remember he was a track and field guy growing up too, so the Olympics dream is very plausible.

Pretty sure his lifelong dream was to play with a team of nuffies and receive several wooden spoons.

Everything that he does after this is just a bonus.

I'm just tired of the "chase my dream" crap. OK, you think it'll be cool to compete in the olympics, sure say that, not that it was your dream, bla bla. Fiji gave you an option to compete in the 7's, and it was unlikely you're going to survive the next cut at the 49'ers, maybe he was even told that by Kelly, so he decided why not have a go. That'd be fine with me. Not everything you do has to be your life long dream.

What happens when the olympics is done, is it going to be his dream to do whatever he does next? The only move that will fit his current narrative will be to return to the NFL, which is a very slim chance he gets back, he'd be down another season, so the NRL will be his only chance, maybe Union? But he'd probably be a better chance for a payday in the NRL.

We probably won't be able to afford him, and I'm not sure having him back is best for us. But I guess time will tell.

It just annoys me.

He could play Japanese Rugby and he'd be virtually unstouchable...I dare say he wouldn't even have to train. It will also be a new market for merchandise.

At some point i find the whole thing selfish. NFL was his long life dream And he chased it and then he leaves? Doesn't this make the whole walking out on the eels a little more piss poor? He walked out on the club to chase his dream.
Than i look at the persons spot he will take in that fiji side who also has dreamed about a gold medal and been playing union for his whole life, just to have it taken away by a blow in who decided he has a new dream. And once he finishes the 7's he will say thanks and good bye. To me it is just a little selfish that is all.

Hate to say it but maybe HJ was right all along about HAYNE. Not a team player.

To be fair he just said a dream of his, it wouldn't be a lie is all I'm saying.

I guess I just don't care enough to be annoyed by it. I watched the NFL anyways so it was cool to see him give it a shot. I have zero interest in rugby so I won't be watching it but I hope he does well.

If he comes back to the NRL I'd be happy if he came to Parra but if not I will still wish him well, just not when he plays us.

AS far as coming back to PARRA.....

1 - Hayne does not care about money. FACT He has already thrown 2 million dollars away. He understands you only get one life and happiness is from within.

2 - He would have TPA's coming out of his eye balls. He is the biggest sports star in AUSTRALIA. Or top 5. So marketable. So money wont be a HUGE issue. He is going to be set.

3 - If he wants to play for PARRA and he says to the NRL i am happy with 500k otherwise i am going to union - I will not play for another club. Are the NRL going to do a FALOU? WOW that would be the biggest mistake the NRL could do to not register. This whole salary cap explosion forcing us to shed Peats and also getting off the HOOK with watmough may work in our favour.

4 - If he went to the Roosters then id go hard for latrell mitchell. The guys is a future STAR. He is young and has 12 years of NRL in him. They can not have both .
