SANTA CLARA, Calif. -- The grand experiment would seem to have been a success ... so long as Jarryd Hayne makes the San Francisco 49ers' initial 53-man roster.
Hayne, the former Australian rugby league star who was seen as more novelty than prospect when he signed with the Niners for $100,000 in the spring, was more than entertaining in the preseason; he was a serviceable player.
But did he do enough to stick?
“He belongs here,” said receiver Quinton Patton.
“He can help us a lot,” added receiver/returner Bruce Ellington.
“Jarryd’s a tough guy,” said coach Jim Tomsula.
Nothing will be official, of course, until after Saturday’s 4 p.m. ET deadline but Hayne’s production was more than impressive.
His 175 rushing yards, on 25 carries, was second in the NFL, behind the Detroit Lions’ Zach Zenner, and Haynes’ 7.0 yards-per-carry average led the league.
Plus, Hayne was third among all punt returners with 163 yards on 10 returns and started seeing time as a gunner on the punt coverage team Thursday night. Yes, he made a tackle, beating double coverage.
“For the first time I was comfortable and got my pads low, which is good, so it’s good to be working on that all the time and finally get that down pat,” Hayne said after rushing for a game-high 58 yards on 10 carries and returning three punts for 43 yards against the Chargers. He also caught two passes for 17 yards.
“Yeah, I feel like it was good."
The loudest play Hayne made, though, was when he lowered his left shoulder into Chargers cornerback Lowell Rose along the right sideline at the end of a 12-yard pickup on a screen pass and absolutely flattened Rose.
“Our coaches are always [talking] about lowering our shoulders, you know, getting ready for contact,” Hayne said. “So it was just a situation that, like I said, all that training, all the hours on the field, to finally see it come together.
“You know, technique and just working every week about lowering my pads and playing through someone, to understand it tonight and really lower my pads, it was exciting.”
Probably even enough to make a roster.

Jarryd Hayne'sfour-game flurry wasn't just fun to watch, it was among the league's most productive.
Hayne finished as the NFL s second-leading rusher of the exhibition season, and his 183 yards were only eight behind leader Zach Zenner of the Detroit Lions.
Hayne s 7.0 yards-per-carry averaged led the league, and he ranked third among all punt returners with 163 yards. Hayne fielded 10 punts, the last of which produced his first-career fair catch, which came on orders from his coaches who wanted the offense back on the field immediately.
Among those impressed was 49ers teammate Bruce Ellington, last year's return specialist, which is a role Hayne is poised to claim.
"He can help us a lot," Ellington said. "He knows how to set it up and make big plays. Special teams was something we didn't have last year. With him, he can help us out a lot."
Coach Jim Tomsula wouldn't say who he'll start as the 49ers' punt returner in the Sept. 14 regular-season opener. As for Hayne's sideline blast of Chargers cornerback Lowell Rose, Tomsuladid not want to disrespect Rose's effort -- Rose was in49ers camp in 2013-- and instead simply summed up Hayne as a "tough guy."

“What Jarryd s done, to come over here and play the way he s been doing, it s been incredible”, Day said. Just like everyone else there were a couple (plays) there where it’s in tight spaces and he had to go.
“I will not get into that dialog a lot”, Tomsula stated Wednesday concerning the cornerback competitors.
It was Ellington’s 70-yard catch-and-run, off former South Carolina teammate Thompson’s third-and-5 pass, that stood as the 49ers’ best highlight in an otherwise unimportant game. Some of Hayne’s “catch-me-if-you-can” runs have enthralled sports fans worldwide.
“He’s shown he can do it”.
Hayne’s biggest highlight on the night was undeniably the bone-rattling hit he laid on Charger Lowell Rose as the corner-back brought a 12-yard gain to an end.
“I don’t know what the rules are in the media in Australia, but you might want to fact check”, Tomsula, adding the 53-man team is not set, said.
However, Tomsula was just as flattering when he discussed Ellington’s hopes. Rookie running back Mike Davis has played well in a limited role and wide receiver Bruce Ellington is coming off a solid performance last week.
“In the spring, I wouldn’t say I was a gentleman to him”. Taking advantage of those things like massages.
I feel very good about his abilities to field.
“Guys are a lot faster”, he said. The defense has racked up 15 sacks through their first three games, and that should give them great confidence to do some damage when the regular season gets underway.
Jarryd Hayne flew again.
“What’s going on appears to be an orchestrated effort by a group of National Football League owners to end up with a franchise with a place that is most lucrative to them”, said Quinn.
“They were very excited”. Our final Chargers vs. 49ers pick is the San Diego Chargers +3 over the San Francisco 49ers.
Hayne’s training attitude is second to none (we know of his practice of stuffing cheat notes into his shorts), as he learns the intricacies of a game that is likened to “physical chess”.
It got fans more than a little excited.
In his first four games, Hayne averaged more rushing yards (25 carries to qualify) than any player in the 32 franchises, and finished second in average punt return yardage.
Stepping in on special teams defence, Hayne chased Herndon as he sprinted sideways towards the sideline and made a diving tackle around the Charger’s ankles.
But these bottom-feeder scrimmages are moneymakers for the National Football League, which is so popular customers will buy season tickets despite also having to pay for both home exhibitions.

The San Francisco 49ers signed Jarryd Hayne, a rugby league player from Australia, and many sneered. Yes there was the hype, yes there was expectation but there were plenty who were saying that he wouldn't pass muster. They aren't saying that now though.
The four preseason games, culminating in a 14-12 win over the San Diego Chargers, served notice on the NFL-watching American public that Jarryd Hayne was no flash-in-the-pan Crocodile Dundee from the backwaters of the Australian outback chancing his arm at a sport roughly similar to the one that he's been playing all his life. At times sparkling, at other times consistent, Jarryd Hayne's displays on the gridiron have made many revise their opinion of him and sit up and take notice.
Here are five reasons why the 'Hayne Plane' will make the San Francisco 49ers final 53-man roster for the 2015 NFL season roster.
1. They can't afford to not select him
If the 49ers decide not to select him, instead placing him 'on waivers', then they run the risk of losing him as they cannot resign him to the practice squad until he's completed a 24-hour period on the waiver list. During that time, any other NFL team is able to claim him from waivers. Looking at his output, general athleticism and improvement potential then you would think that this would become a certainty. In fact, I'd go so far as to say that the 49ers know this already and that it will be a 'certainty' that they wish to avoid.
2. Hayne is Mr Versatility and gives options
One thing all teams want is that 'one-spot, three-job' player - in other words a player who only takes up one roster spot but can fulfil more than one role on the team. That's where Jarryd Hayne proves invaluable, he definitely has versatility in his armoury. Able to operate as a running back out of the backfield, a pass-catching back, a kick returner and as a member on Special Team kick coverage duty. Not only is Hayne versatile and an option in many roles, he's also showing that he's pretty adept at all of them. It's obviously early days yet but you have to remember that Hayne is only a few months and four games into his NFL career with the 49ers.
3. Hayne promises more
A few months and four games into a new career and a new sport and, to be fair, looking pretty comfortable. If what has been seen already, admittedly against second-string players in pre-season, is what he is capable of now, based on natural talent and limited coaching, then imagine what he might be capable of at this point next season. More intense coaching and exposure to higher intensity games can only serve to lift and polish Hayne's general understanding of football and his performances in the sport itself.
4. Offensive output in pre-season
To say that Hayne has shown offensive promise is actually underselling him somewhat. There has been plenty of fizz and zip about Hayne's performance on on the 49ers' offensive unit over the four pre-season games. Whilst he has not scored a touchdown, there has been enough seen to suggest definite promise in his general play. He regularly makes the first defender miss with his good footwork and shifts of balance.
He also has the second-most rushing yardage in the NFL pre-season with 175 yards in 25 carries, trailing Zach Zenner by 8 yards - Zenner had 10 more carries though. Added to this, Hayne has big play potential, highlighted by his breakaway 53-yard run against the Houston Texans.
5. Hayne offers Special Team flexibility
Hayne has also shown ability in the kick return game as well as the offensive run and catch game. On Thursday against the San Diego Chargers, Hayne fielded 3 punts and returned them for an average gain of 14.3 yards. Over the four games of preseason, Hayne's punt return average stands at a more than respectable 18.1 yards. To put this into perspective, the San Francisco 49er ended the 2014 season with a punt return average of 6.5 yards and with a longest punt return of 23 yards (by Bruce Ellington) - both marks which have been beaten by Hayne this preseason. Hayne has also shown that he can perform on on Sprcisl Team kick coverage, beating double team defence to tackle Javontee Herndon for a loss in the game against San Diego.
Now, I'm not in any way saying that Jarryd Hayne is the proverbial automatic shoe-in for a spot on the 49ers' 53-man final roster. However, due to the 5 reasons given, I think that he has done more than enough to earn himself a spot and some serious game time next season.
