It's interesting that pretty much every shape & form of humaniods have worshipped some f**king sort or another of higher being(s) with widly varying intereptations of what exactly the f**k the higher "being" is on about. A sort of inferiority complex? or common acceptance thats there's heaps of shit going on behind the scenes that we've got no clue about, so we better be good?

On a related note - I'll happily argue with any of you merkins that we aren't alone in the universe.

of course you aren't alone - all us other merkins are posting on this forum ffs

I think the worship of some higher form stems from a desire to believe there is something in control and good shit to happen when the ultimate bad thing happens (death)

I'm fascinated by Atheists. Same as you, not necessarily judging them. I just can't get my head around the idea that there is no God - and, particularly, that there is no life after this one. It doesn't make sense to me on any level. One of the fascinating things I've discovered about Atheists is that they are generally very social, warm, caring people who are very principled about most things. If there is no God and no additional life after this one, what the hell does it matter how you behave in this life? Fascinating. (But probably too small a sample size.)

Agree with the bolded bit. The rest is just silly.

Now I've just read about what happened in Lalor Park today. Where was "God" there?

Well that was the general argument about Hayne's tweet. He suggests that God had direct influence over his success, however he let the little Syrian boy drown.

And that's a fair point, Gronk.

However, all that says is that there does not appear to be an interventionist God.

So what does that mean? I guess that leaves open the possibility that God can influence our spirits, or our minds, if we are open to that, which leaves the responsibility for everything with us.

Which is the way I think it should be. It makes logical sense. If God just does everything then there's no free will and no meaning to our achievements. I doubt God would create a universe where that was the case. Makes zero sense.

Or he picks and chooses.

I like the maxim on the walls of the local Uniting Church that I used to pass on the way to school. 'Know God, Know Peace. No God, No Peace'. Or was it 'Good Fences make Good Neighbours'?

I do not understand why we have too talk about God. First we will never know until we are dead so why argue about it. Just enjoy life-treat people well and see what happens :)

People should'nt have opinions unless there fact!

I remember that show like it was yesterday.

"Neighbours, good fences make good neighbours. Just friendly bunch of merkins trying to make each other's day...merkins just a bunch of friendly merkins..."

If there was only fact and no opinion then we would have to shut down this forum.

You want God to intervene for you? To make everything as you want it to be? What's the point in that?

Or accept that what happened in Lalor Park was the fault of all of us. The ambivalence to others, to people worse off than us , or who we consider less deserving. Unless we do something about it, what does it matter anyway. We can stop pretending that we cared or that we are shocked.

I am not social at all, I hate large groups of people, in fact I hate people I general, I only like individuals. I am not warm or caring either. I guess I also don't identify as an atheist though.

I just simply have no tangible evidence to suggest there is a god and also absolutely no need for there to be or not to be one. It doesn't affect my life in any way, shape or form. When I die it's over, it is irrelevant what happens to me after.

Pretty sure Jarryds just recognising alot of his talent is a gift. Its not like anyone could pull it off regardless of what they believed.

Since religion resurfaced, my favorite bible verse written ~ 500BC

Isaiah 53

New International Version (NIV)

53 Who has believed our message
and to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed?
2 He grew up before him like a tender shoot,
and like a root out of dry ground.
He had no beauty or majesty to attract us to him,
nothing in his appearance that we should desire him.
3 He was despised and rejected by mankind,
a man of suffering, and familiar with pain.
Like one from whom people hide their faces
he was despised, and we held him in low esteem.
4 Surely he took up our pain
and bore our suffering,
yet we considered him punished by God,
stricken by him, and afflicted.
5 But he was pierced for our transgressions,
he was crushed for our iniquities;
the punishment that brought us peace was on him,
and by his wounds we are healed.
6 We all, like sheep, have gone astray,
each of us has turned to our own way;
and the Lord has laid on him
the iniquity of us all.
7 He was oppressed and afflicted,
yet he did not open his mouth;
he was led like a lamb to the slaughter,
and as a sheep before its shearers is silent,
so he did not open his mouth.
8 By oppression[a] and judgment he was taken away.
Yet who of his generation protested?
For he was cut off from the land of the living;
for the transgression of my people he was punished.
9 He was assigned a grave with the wicked,
and with the rich in his death,
though he had done no violence,
nor was any deceit in his mouth.
10 Yet it was the Lord’s will to crush him and cause him to suffer,
and though the Lord makes[c] his life an offering for sin,
he will see his offspring and prolong his days,
and the will of the Lord will prosper in his hand.
11 After he has suffered,
he will see the light of life[d] and be satisfied[e];
by his knowledge[f] my righteous servant will justify many,
and he will bear their iniquities.
12 Therefore I will give him a portion among the great,[g]
and he will divide the spoils with the strong,[h]
because he poured out his life unto death,
and was numbered with the transgressors.
For he bore the sin of many,
and made intercession for the transgressors.

Or he picks and chooses.

Firstly, there's no reason to call God "he". All that shows is you have been culturally indoctrinated and hints that any response you have to God is nothing more than a response to cultural indoctrination and thus not relevant when discussing what the truth might be.

So, basically, you're one of the people who confuses God with religion, and rebels against it so that you can show how anti-establishment you are.

But, as the use of "he" has demonstrated, the people you rebel against still control the way you think, so you can't even succeed at that.

***

Secondly, there is no reason to suppose that is true. I see no evidence of even selective intervention.

Yet again, your statement hints at bitterness, thus illustrating your underlying reasons for taking the position you have.

Well, that has to be the stupidest thing ever written. Even stupider than Gronk's tripe.

Whether you believe or not, if it IS true then it will affect you, whether you like it or not.

All this statement shows is that you have no interest in The Truth, whatever that is. You have just shown yourself to be the typical, self-centred atheist - someone who doesn't want there to be a God, because then they're not the centre of the universe.
