Who's eligible for the practice squad?

Not all players are eligible for a team's practice squad. Eligibility is limited to players who were on an active roster for fewer than six games, or were on the 45-man active gameday roster for fewer than nine games. Plenty of practice squad spots will go to rookies who are still adjusting to the speed and skill of the NFL, but players with limited gameday experience or previous time on the practice squad to start their career are usually eligible, too.
A player is allowed on the practice squad for up to two years, with one year counting as six weeks in a season. A third year on the practice squad is only allowed if the team keeps 53 players on the active-inactive list at all times.

Probably makes sense, kills the media hype, he gets a chance to settle down and learn the game and by reading the above, they had to do it sooner than later otherwise if he plays and fails he either gets cut completely or they carry him on the roster.

Next year will be Haynes year.

PAY CUT: Jarryd Hayne was on US$25,745 a week with @49ers 53-man list. Falls to US$6,600 with practice squad

BTW, with all the injuries that the 49'ers are facing, can Hayne be dragged back out of the practice squad to play?

You would have to think so.

In other news the 49ers are starting to make some other roster moves with Vernon Davis rumoured to be on the trade block to Denver for what looks to be a pretty crap deal for the 49ers (6th + 6th round picks in 2016 and 2017 in return for their 2016 7th pick) while they have also picked up RB Shaun Draughn.

Lots of chatter about Kaepernick's place in the organisation as well.

Presumably they'd trade Davis to free up cap space. No other good reason that immediately occurs to me. He's not the player he used to be, but he's not their problem.

EDIT: Davis has been traded.

So basically Hayne has lost nearly $800,000 assuming he was on a million or so with us. Seriously I get the chasing dreams and all but FFS that is a lot of money to forgo.

Also got to consider whatever he's getting from private sponsorships etc, but more importantly, he's got a shot at a much, much bigger payday if he makes it. If he's smart he'll already have enough money to look after himself for a long time.

I dare say he has Baz but still he has lost a significant amount so far. I'm only estimating of course. Just. Cannot keep thinking what a waste of talent playing a sport where the average game time is 11 min for the whole team. I just don't get it. Why even get dressed up in all the gear. They remind me of those nerds that dress up as Knights in armour on weekends.

It's not a waste. It's an awesome story and he has achieved more than expected already.

Yeh, I dunno. Sports are just different. While the ball is in play a lot longer in rugby league, for a lot of that time nothing is happening. The average Storm game has 35 minutes devoted to Greco-Roman wrestling. NFL is a bit of a rugby / chess hybrid.

PS: Get a PVR with a programmable skip button....don't have to watch the shit between plays in the gridiron.
