Who did the 49ers pick? Will it affect Jarryd Hayne's hopes of making the team?
After trading down from the 15th pick to the 17th (a move which also garnered them an extra fourth-round selection), San Francisco drafted defensive end Arik Armstead. That has zero impact on Hayne's pursuit of a spot on the team. What does matter though is that San Diego used the 15th pick to draft running back Melvin Gordon - a player who would have seriously curtailed Hayne's NFL dreams if he had ended up with the 49ers. The fact San Fran let the Chargers draft the much-lauded Gordon indicates one of two things. Either they have identified a running prospect in the later rounds or they are happy with who they already have in camp. In short, this is anything but bad news for Hayne and his fellow 49ers running backs. His task hasn't got any easier, but perhaps more importantly it isn't any harder. With the draft continuing over the next two days, it remains to be seen if the 49ers try and unearth their running back of the future now Frank Gore has left and signed with Indianapolis.
