Jarryd Hayne's has a new hurdle in his fight for a spot in the San Francisco 49ers fulltime roster with the NFL team drafting another running back for the ex-NRL star to battle.
The 49ers have hooked Mike Davis, a fourth round draft pick, from the University of South Carolina, setting up a direct rival for Hayne to snare the No. 4 spot behind running backs Carlos Hye, Reggie Bush and Kendall Hyde.
San Francisco general manager Trent Baalke told The Bay Area News Group Davis' signing was all about creating competition for spots.
"Like we do at every position, we’re going to roll out the ball, coaches are going to coach the heck out of them, and we’re going to find out exactly what we have in every one of those players and what role they will fill if they're on the (opening-day roster)," Baalke said.
For Hayne, winning a spot in the 53-man roster over Davis shapes as a huge challenge with the highly rated 175cm, 98kg athlete, boasting identical dimensions to the 49ers all-time leading rusher, Frank Gore, who left the team to join the Indianapolis Colts.
It comes after Hayne last week acknowledged the long road ahead to snare a fulltime spot with the 49ers.
"Everyone's good and you have to realise everyone is trying to make the roster," Hayne said.
"We’ve got maybe 50 percent of the boys guaranteed a spot, and the rest are still chipping away, looking to make the squad.
"Part of this experience was that humbling of myself."
According to NFL reporter Cam Inman, The Bay Area News Group, Hayne's best chance of snaring an opening-day roster spot, hinges on his special-teams ability, such as returning kicks and punts as well as a tackling ability in coverage.
The 49ers are four weeks into their offseason training program, which ends June 11, with the fulltime squad to be decided in August ahead of a September10 start for the next NFL season.
