Yeah, but in League you don't have 3 guys coming at you trying to strip the ball out.
And if it does happen you get a penalty.

Much harder to hold onto the ball when you are surrounded by guys who are allowed to take it off you.

Wouldn't it be easier to hold a ball that has more grip, is smaller, is easier to hold in your hand and tuck it into your forearm/bicep, as well as having gloves which increase the grip with the ball?

True.

I'm an NFL fan, but I don't agree with his comments.

It's just typical "NFL is a game played by Mensa members in Adonis-like physiques" propaganda from the clown Scott.

You are missing the point.

In rugby codes many players have to maintain a loose carry. It is so they can pass the ball/offload/generate further phases of play.

You don't do this in NFL. So every carry is a tight carry - the premium on security is that of a forward taking it up on tackle 1, only you will be hit by players who are trying to dislodge the ball and can do almost anything they want to do this.

Yes, and the other factor is that to effect a tackle they only have to knock you down, not maintain contact with you while you hit the ground, so they can go for hits that would be pretty poor policy in the rugby codes (as well as illegal these days).

How many times did Hayne offload in his career? Hell - how many times do fullback offload?

Any imbecile can hold a ball - particularly a fun-sized ball like a pigskin.

Say what you want - the stakes for dropping the ball in league (with or without assistance from the tacklers) are much higher than a fumble FFS.

Poor bomb-defusing very nearly cost Manu Vatuvei his career.

Anyone who has ever heard Scotts speak knows that he has two functioning brain cells left in his head - when asked how to fix Oakland, he said he'd focus on the draft. Yes, that will fix everything...

Once of Haynes strengths will not be used at all in NFL. His awesome passing game. To effect this, he had to use, by definition, a loose carry.

It is not a criticism.

Just because Hayne carried the ball on his finger tips in league doesn't mean he won't know how to tuck it under his arm in the Yank game.

I just hate Scotts. He's an ill-informed gorilla.

Another classic from him was when he once stated that statistics show that shorter punters are better...

There is no doubt that Hayne will need to adapt his grip on the ball, but the term "loose carry", when discussing league players' grips, is not accurate, seeing as dropping a ball in this code is punished by immediately losing possession, whereas a fumble in the NFL can be recovered by either side.

He says holding onto the ball is critical, but the sport he loves doesn't penalise you for losing the ball...

A turnover in NFL is a big deal. As in rugby codes, it is a came where you need to control territory & field position. In NFL a turnover will often put the team gaining into a scoring position. If only for a field goal. Same in rugby. Less so in league. You get an advantage in league, but it will often be harder to convert into points.

Interesting fact, Chicago Bears just signed a CFL ex college player who is 6'2" , weighs 98kg and runs the 40 yards in 4.4secs. He managed to get a train and trial contract and has played since he was 8, has been at a couple of NFL clubs, is regarded as physically gifted but misses out. That's how tough his ocompetititn is , as the player was a high school standout, heavily recruited into college, but there were so many gifted guys he gor drafted late and hasn't made it

JH has real comp to get a start

yet people are willing to take his statements seriously about hayne's athletic ability....

But you can recover the fumble.

Knock the ball on in league, and you're screwed.
