The attacking team had the loose head though, prior to 1982, didn't they? And back when men were men and chicken tasted like chicken, the attacking team had both the feed and loose-head.

Not entirely sure of the rule, but was attacking was defined by where you were on the field, not by whether you had the ball or not? So it depended whose half you were in when whatever it was occurred?

Attacking / defending was determined according to which half of the field you were in IIRC.

...Go on - you're six spices short...

I was just thinkin of the ones that I put on a roast chicken.

Back on JH, it seems that Terrell Owens (or whoever spoke to him) has got a bit confused about what position Jarryd wants to play in the NFL (rather than where he played in NRL) and thinks that one option is fullback. That would not be a good idea.

"Plane speaking

Jarryd who? Hayne Plane what?

Legendary wide receiver Terrell Owens has no idea who former Parramatta fullback Jarryd Hayne is or about his dream of playing in the NFL, but he says he can make it.

"Who?" asked the charismatic Owens, who was the special guest at an intimate lunch at the SCG on Thursday ahead of next week's Super Bowl. "What position does he play?"

Told that Hayne wants to make it as a running back or fullback, the former San Francisco superstar said: "Number one, I wish him the best of luck. If he's a guy with a lot of confidence, if he makes it, he'll be a trendsetter. Playing football is a physical sport. You look at what rugby does, it's very tough. The position he's going for, running back and fullback, that's one of those positions where you have to be tough, you have to be gritty and hit some guys."

What about the fact that Hayne has never played the game?

"It's easy to understand, in terms of the fullback and what they do," Owens said. "If he can grasp that concept of running your plays, blocking the right people, and really protecting the quarterback, he can make it." "

Hayne's too small for a fullback. Would need to beef up considerably.
In T.O's defence though, the article did say he was told by someone else that Hayne might try to have a go at fullback.

If Hayne was indeed 107kg at his heaviest, that's pretty close to fullback size. Most fullbacks are about 110kg, or they were when I followed NFL. Hayne might be a bit tall.

Actually, now just looking into it most top fullbacks are around the 250lb mark (113kg) and 5'10''-6'1''.

Don't know why but they look bigger on TV. Hayne would still have to put on a few kilos and build up his upper-body strength to play the position. Would handle the ball a lot less than if he played RB though. Fullbacks are usually used for blocking unless on very short downs.

Unfortunately this kind of thinking is quickly taking over the NRL as well. If a player doesn't fit into some very specific dimensions (size, weight) then he's got no chance of making it, so we wont select him.

Its a shame really.

Size does not equal strength.

To use wrestling as an example:

1000w

This is Antonio Cesaro.

This is Mark Henry.

Mark Henry legitimately competed in the World's Strongest Man competition several years ago, and was a legitimately good power lifter.

Antonio Cesaro is a pro wrestler who is regularly seen to show he is the strongest man in the WWE locker room.

Obviously Cesaro is not a small man, but he is smaller than Henry, and he has shown just how strong he is many times (for example, he deadlifted the Big Show in a gutwrench powerbomb at a house show about 4 years ago).

Hayne has a good frame to build upon. He's tall and genetically big. All he needs to do is work on building his power.

Most teams Rarely use a fullback, and a low centre of gravity is mainly needed, not paramount but can be

No way Hayne is a fullback lol

I think he's too athletic anyway. To be honest he seems best suited to defence, but he'd be even more hampered by lack of experience/instincts at safety or outside linebacker than he would at running back. At least there he can just 'run to daylight'.

Yes. Defence would be harder to get used to. This is evident in players who switch rugby codes. Would be even more pronounced in moving to D in NFL.

When I was growing up Ron Miller was the next door neighbour of my Godmother in Kirrawee. At age 10 or so, he was my idol AND kids thought I was cool cos I knew him. When my brother told me it was all fake I was devastated. Never watched it since.
